The Lab NYC is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly afterwork party where we stream the best American and international DJs from the intimate space connected to our Brooklyn office. This week Mixmag is excited to welcome Sofi Tukker for a special DJ set in The Lab NYC on Thursday.
Made up of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, Sofi Tukker is more of a movement than an artist group. Explained in their own words, their style hosts a community and welcoming wave of joy, utilizing their unique contrasting dynamic as one of their most enticing traits. Halpern was an aspiring pro basketball player whose track was cut short when a bout of illness left him on bed rest for nine months, leading him to learn how to produce electronic music. Meanwhile, Hawley-Weld grew up as a world traveler picking up a handful of incredibly eclectic talents before crossing paths with Tucker in a bossa nova warehouse.
Quickly rising to fame after their smash single 'Drinkee', Sofi Tukker most recently released their debut EP 'Soft Animals'. The New York-based duo has shared their next single, 'Moon Tattoo' and has just wrapped up a massive global tour supporting M83.

I feel like almost no one in this crowd is truly understanding what an amazing set they're witnessing and get to be a part of. I can't understand all the utterly still bodies in this place. Do they even know where they are? Did someone pull them off the street to film this? lol. I would be losing my mind dancing my butt off for the full hour and a half. I'm moving around more in my living room than 100% of the people in this dance club. That's sad, and I would think not very motivating for dj's? A crowded room with a handful of dancers. Fun! Love this so much. Thanks for posting! Hope you guys come close to Ottawa, ON.
That's typical of these socal elitist parties. Most of these people know nothing of the Artist or have any appreciation of their craft. It's all about privilege, about knowing someone, about trying to be a part of the here-and-now club. I wish that this was only a NY thang, but unfortunately, it is not.
You have no idea. I had the good fortune of seeing them live, and it seems to be that being there is more important than having fun. Attending is cooler than having fun according to these crowds. Fortunately I'm too old to give a shit about my image and being cool, so the band/DJs at least had one person to look at that was dancing and having proper fun. :)

I was listening to this while studying, and I'm a Dutchie, so on the 33th minute I was like... wait this song that comes up sounds a lot like 'Drank en drugs' and then it actually was. So funny to see people dance on this song. Love Sofi Tukker! :)
