    I have developed tension because ever since I was a kid I have been imitating singers and I have no idea what my true voice is anymore.. :( I can’t even scream...even speaking loud hurts my voice.. I’m I hopeless?

    • @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717
      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717  7 років тому +2

      Hi Dani - no, you're not hopeless. But I would recommend getting checked out by an ENT to make sure everything is OK, and then finding a voice teacher in your area. Sorry for your trouble - be well!

      Ruth Ratliff Vocal Trainer Thank you for replying! I’ve been doing this exercise every morning for the past week and let me tell you the changes it has done to my voice are amazing! It also gave me the idea of how it’s supposed to feel when singing or speaking out loud! I’m singing with less effort and more resonance and it just feels better, my friends tell me To shut up every time but I just keep doing it! Oh and yes I just found a teacher in my area and I’m starting out this week! I also been watching your other videos of the best products for the voice and I’m already starting to order some! Thank you for all your great videos and tips! I was praying for my singing when I came across this video and You really help me so much with this exercise! THANK YOU! 🙏🏼

      Dani, that is truly awesome! Regular vocal warmups are key to keeping your voice in good shape. So glad you are starting lessons, as well. Many blessings, and happy singing!

    Such vocal goodies here - especially appreciate your saying how past critiques impose a layer of inhibition between us and our natural vocal function (a program for dysphonia of some type, right?). I'm reminded of the pithy quote from Brett Manning, that "all babies are rock stars, and some rock stars are babies" lol!

      Absolutely Erich! What makes a singer great? I think it's a combination of talent and raw courage - it takes nerves of steel to be vulnerable at that level. Thank you for your comment! :)

      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717  5 років тому +1

      Hi Eman - I listened to a couple of your videos - very nice! The cry sound can help you get a more firm sound in your upper register but you need to keep the sound open and lifted, just like you are calling someone. Try to sing some of your songs on nay nays and yah yahs - it will help you to feel the resonance. Maybe take some voice lessons with a teacher in your area. Good luck!

    Terms: they can be confusing. I understand that what you are demonstrating is called the "vocal cry". But what is that not-quite-country flip that many singers (including Pavarotti) use. It's a cry, but it's a change in register cry, and it's still connected.

    Where should my tongue be during this exercise? I feel like it retracts sometimes and it sounds better but doesn't feel great.

    • @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717
      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717  3 роки тому

      Your tongue should be more forward and relaxed with the tip behind the bottom teeth. Try practicing in a mirror with the tongue gently forward resting on the bottom lip. This may encourage the muscles to release which keep retracting your tongue back. Hope that helps.

    If i make the crying sound in my falsetto isn't good right?

    • @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717
      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717  3 роки тому

      Not necessarily - you can play around with a little bit of that cry feeling in your falsetto to make the sound more firm. As always, if it is uncomfortable, listen to your body.

    In order to replicate this sound, my larynx has to go up, and from what I know that's bad. If I force my larynx to stay down, its hard to get that clear baby cry. Is it OK for the larynx to go up just to make this sound ?

    • @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717
      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717  5 років тому +1

      Hi - It's not necessarily "bad." Your larynx goes up and down all day when you make a myriad of sounds during speech. In my experience, when you sing, you want to maintain the natural action of the laryngeal muscles, without "forcing" the larynx it to stay down or up. You may have tongue tension, which would impact the action of the larynx. I try to think about just opening my throat, as I would do if I were calling someone, like on the word "Hey." Try that instead and see if it feels more natural to you. Hope that helps!

    Any exercise that reconnects us to our (often repressed) primal impulses is a delight (and should be sought not only by artists but the general public too) - thanks for the post!
    Couple questions:
    1) technically it sounds a little like belting but in terms of feel it feels very different. Is it related?
    2) as a man I can do it at your range or an octave lower - should I experiment with both?
    There is something really lovely about this sound - feels good

    • @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717
      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717  3 роки тому

      Glad you enjoyed! I believe the organic cry is more similar to the "mix" vocal production than a belt production, but yes, similar. At least in my experience.

    hey ruth i rally enjoyed the video but i have one concern is vocal cry healthy for your voice i am asking this because after i have these exercises and sang loudly for about 30 minutes i felt some pain in my neck and my voice become brighter i usually have a dark tone in my voice now it is gone is this healthy and what is the differnence between this and yelling

    • @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717
      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717  7 років тому +1

      Hi Karam - Thanks for your question. Yes, the cry is a healthy technique. It sounds as if you may be overdoing it, though. Try shorter practice sessions and don't use the cry exercises exclusively - combine them with more traditional exercises. You may be working too hard to produce the sound - it is just like you are calling to someone across the room - not yelling or screaming.
