    Any exercise that reconnects us to our (often repressed) primal impulses is a delight (and should be sought not only by artists but the general public too) - thanks for the post! Couple questions: 1) technically it sounds a little like belting but in terms of feel it feels very different. Is it related? 2) as a man I can do it at your range or an octave lower - should I experiment with both? There is something really lovely about this sound - feels good

      Glad you enjoyed! I believe the organic cry is more similar to the "mix" vocal production than a belt production, but yes, similar. At least in my experience.

    Where should my tongue be during this exercise? I feel like it retracts sometimes and it sounds better but doesn't feel great.

    • @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717
      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717 3 роки тому

      Your tongue should be more forward and relaxed with the tip behind the bottom teeth. Try practicing in a mirror with the tongue gently forward resting on the bottom lip. This may encourage the muscles to release which keep retracting your tongue back. Hope that helps.

    Ruth, do you suggest an estrogen supplement for mature vocalists?

    • @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717
      @ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717 3 роки тому

      It all depends on each individual. I used bioidentical hormones early on, and they helped for about 6 months, but then stopped working - I also gained weight. I have been taking some phytoestrogenic supplements over the years that helped with my other symptoms, but not really with my voice. From what I've read, each woman responds differently to hormone treatment or phytoestrogens, so it is difficult say which one works better than the other.

    • @victoriakeegan6450
      @victoriakeegan6450 3 роки тому

      @@ruthratliffvocaltrainer2717 , i used bioidenticals early on as well, and they didn't impact my voice. That is in my "rear view mirror" now😆 Other symptoms all abated. Yet, my voice doesn't seem as strong/full as before. I will hydrate more (live in high desert) and keep practicing! Thank you for your time.

    I am 49 this year and have been singing all my life. I have taken many years of voice lessons and worked hard to understand my voice. Just in the past year I am starting to feel like my instrument doesn't even belong to me. I feel and hear a lot of difference in my voice. My flexibility has diminished and my tone has deepened as well as a wider vibrato. You have given me hope with your videos and vocal tips and warm ups. I look forward to using them on a regular basis and getting to know my voice again. Thank you so much!

      Hi Kathryn - Thank you - I'm glad the videos are helpful! So sorry you are having these issues - I so relate! It's amazing (and very dismaying) how sensitive the vocal instrument is to hormonal fluctuations. Some women vocalists go through this passage with little or no change to their voice, and for others it is a game changer. Keep singing and keep the faith! 🎶 😊

      Hello Tanya - So sorry to hear that - I certainly empathize. The one thing that really has helped my voice are the SOVT exercises I talk about in this video. Straw singing with the added resistance of the water in a bottle is the best I've found. I have also taken a parallel course into sound healing, using my voice. This has also helped as well. Look into vocal toning the chakra sounds, specifically the throat chakra - might help with the hypothyroidism. Here is a link to my video on my other channel about this: ua-cam.com/video/AHHfSiZFTtw/v-deo.html Take heart, sending blessings!
