How One Branch Just Cost Me $20,000

- For the 3rd time in as many years, I've had a significant branch fall from the trees in front of my house. I hired an arborist to come to check them out and I had to remove them, then the expensive part comes along. Ah the joys of home ownership!

Mr. Spaghetti, what is going on with the shutters on the house ?
noticed that too. warped to F!
I had the same question
Funny story, being in the direct sun they need to be painted with a paint with an LRV value of 55 or higher. Buying from an architectural site you would think they would know better, that happened within 3 months of purchase. The black paint they used has an LRV rating of 5, been working on trying to sort it out with them for months now. Everyone always wants to blame someone else.
@@superspeeders That's annoying
LRV is the Light Reflectance Value. Black is the lowest at 0 and white is 100. If you need above 55 then that means the shutters would have to be a light grey for example. Meaning you can’t get a black shutter with an LRV above 55. You might need to get a shutter made out of a material that can handle the heat that a black paint absorbs. If you want to keep the black color.
Today, Mr. Spaghetti is upsetti that one heavy breadstick cost him 20,000 noodles.
It never gets boring
@@shiTthebed86 it really does
It really doesn't
Lmfao
Hahah
Let's talk about those shutters.
Salvador Dahl edition
I came here to say that.
That's the first thing I noticed they are literally peeling away from the house.
yeah i was like wtf happened to those lol
Literally came here to look for this comment. Why are they literally curved
I worked for a tree company and that company you have there is absolutely fucked. The correct way is to go up the tree take off the big branches then take off the main trunk in sections and then lower them slowly with a crane. I think that's the first time they thought about how to cut down a tree. Unbelievable. I felt that tree hit the ground from here. I would look for cracks in my foundation and walls after that bs.
They did go up into the tree and removed as many branches as they safely could. However, as you can tell from the tree literally exploding when it hit the ground, the trees were severely rotted. Attempting to section out the main shoot of a heavily rotted tree is a great way to place yourself in an early grave.
@@UndefinedStasis they should have dropped the top and then the rest
@@FishFind3000 imo it's not worth the risk once you've established that the tree is rotten, it's hard to tell the extent of the rot, the outside x amount of inches can be completely normal but the core can be completely gone(most dangerous type of tree). Additionally a rotten tree doesn't fall the same way as a healthy one, more prone to kick back/more unpredictable in general. As the OP mentioned the use of a crane would be very helpful but, you get what you pay for; 3500 for dropping and removing 5 trees is a very good rate. They also didn't want to remove the presumably healthy top portion of the tree so they could attach hoists to direct the fall. I would question how experienced they are though as it didn't appear as though they made an angular pie cut to help with the falling direction of the tree; solely relying on hoists.
I'd put Green Giant Arborvitaes in a row there. They hold up incredibly well with our northeast winters and will create the best screening from the street. The 8-10ft size is ideal because they have a more established root ball. I'd really wait till the spring if you can because the trees available now will be rough and have been sitting a long time at a nursery.
Kinda boring, I would mix it up with some holly trees, rhododendron, mountain laurel and inkberry bushes, junipers, and maybe some eastern white cedar (native arborvitae). All native evergreens (not all conifers though) great for birds and will not drop branches nor grow as tall as those white pines he had
I told him to put up some Yews or magics thh
Leyland Cyprus over the Giant Arbors. They're faster growing and accept topping to keep them from getting too tall and to force them to grow wider.
He needs a big fence and behind it plant trees and keep them at a reasonable height dont let them grow like crazy
I recently had 6 trees removed from my property, thats not how they did it lol. I paid $3300 and they had a guy start at the top and cut off in sections as he worked his way down. The way they just let the whole tree fall is very odd. Feel like they just "wanted to get it done" kinda thing.
If you have the space why bother to cut it in pieces?
@@zaxarispetixos8728 Did you watch the video? This is why you cut it in pieces.
@@Blahsheep That was unlucky and that is why i noticed after that they droped the trees sideways on the driveway
@@zaxarispetixos8728it’s almost as if there was a reason in the video you watched.
Pretty dangerous to do that so close to the road.
My wife and I looked at that property before Rob ever made a video about it. The price, the slope, the trees, traffic, and the difficulty in dealing with the town to build there was why we passed. Glad we did. Rob has more patience than I do. Makes for good content though!
I’m glad you did too 🙃
Real life comments like this are always wild to read
@@superspeeders 🤣Much respect, Rob. You made it happen. I'm happy for you!
What traffic though lmao. Good thing double glazing exists
I’d be more worried about my shutters warping than a tree branch falling
arent they already warped ?
@@Chris-hw4mq that’s what he’s saying…
$3,500 for all those trees was hell of deal, In beginning of this past summer I paid $3,900 for one tree but that did include grinding down the stump and filling in with dirt
My neighbor had a 40 foot tree fall last year and the guy that does the maintenance in our subdivision charged her $1,000 to take care of it so yeah, he got a great deal. It was a ton of work just for that one tree she had.
They looked lie white oaks, so they would make that again in the lumber. Notice how they cut them to length, no fire wood for those logs.
@@General_Confusion that makes sense now why was so cheap
@@venom5809 it was probably a hard wood tree, cherry, ash etc, the guys who cut it down probably sold the wood for a pretty penny however, no cares about some garbage pine tree.
@@General_Confusion Since when are oaks green in the wintertime? If you mean white pine, it's probably too soft for any serious use. Or it could some form of yellow pine... hard to tell without being up close and personal with the tree. It might get made into 2x4s. Probably not the best firewood, unless you are burning outside. Pine can lead to chimney fires.
What's up with the shutters curling?
lmao
Ditto question
noticed that too lol
Cheap plastic shutters
I gotta say. I've had trees removed from Mt property that were as big and I never witnessed a company fall a tree with all the large branches on it. I mean...of course that was bound to happen.
maybe thats what the $5,000+ quote was for
Exactly what I thought. When I had my trees taken down they cut all the branches off and then cut it down in sections.
Same here
Yeah they're trying to finish faster that's why there was a more expensive quote where it would probably be done properly
@@25566it always works, until it doesn’t.
I've never seen trees removed like that, Mr.Spaghetti always seems to find the dodgiest guys for these jobs 😂
That damage would never happen if they removed it properly 🤣
get what you pay for
Tree stump removal was probably the difference between $3600 quote and the $5800 quote.
They should have never fell the trees that large straight at the house they was definitely taking a lot of liability right there
You can measure a tree you know that right? With simple math you can see if it's safe to do so.
@Alex and just like they thought from "measuring" the tree the house got damaged thanks for proving my point that what they done was incorrect
@@Julian-do7bv it was bound to happen.
You can't tell how a branch will break when doing this work.
The way I cut down trees, I remove the branches till its somewhat clean.
Then I remove a bit on top just to make sure i don't hit anything If I'm having second thoughts just in case.
After that, I make my final cut and it comes down no problem.
There are times where I can't have room to drop the whole tree. So i do the same thing, clear some branches out and make cuts till I reach the bottom.
@Alex it should have been cut in sections Ive been in tree work myself for quite awhile if my guys done that I would have been pissed
Not saying what they did was wrong. They made the cut and tried to pull the tree away from the house as much as possible. If that branch didn't break off like that then it would have been fine. They did an exhalant work and it was unfortunate that the branch broke off in such a way.
What’s going on with those shutters?
Looks like the vinyl window shudders are warping already
I would of asked for the bucket truck and them brought down in sections because i've seen and heard plenty of these stories. Even if it doesn't fail you're going to be cleaning your yard up for weeks. Bringing dirt in and re-seeding all the holes and dents in the ground. Tree cutting something I'll gladly pay more for better quality work.
Such an eventful life, you could have a reality tv show
The problem with planting the trees now is they will be exposed to sun light and not have a root system to provide the water needed. Much higher rate of success if you wait until April/May when the ground isn't frozen and you can water them as they are expanding their root system. Also, right now you are picking from what left over and didn't sell in 2022. In the Spring all of the seller will have fresh inventory. Consider staggering the new trees rather than a straight line. You have a deep lot which would allow this and the advantage is it will create a better visual barrier from the road. Especially if the new trees branches are wider on the bottom than further up the trees.
The powerlines appear to be the old style from the 50's. Might be worth a call to the city/power company to see if they have a plan in place to replace/upgrade the lines and run them underground. One to many ice storms...
That costs money. Plus there’s already utilized like gas underground. They tend to only do all underground when it’s a new subdivision and it can be all planned out nicely.
It's New Jersey lol
damn you got lucky that tree that exploded seemed to be rooted.
get some evergreens. itll give you privacy and block some of the street car noise.
Best of luck with the repairs, br careful what you park there now that everyone can drive around your nice gate.
Get some nice American holly, eastern redcedar, eastern whitecedar, native rhododendron, and inkberry and you will have a beautiful native evergreen windbreak and sight blocker that won't grow as high or drop branches
Wow, $3,500 is a hell of a deal! I have two 90' cottonwoods we're having removed in the next week or two. They're going to cost $5,000 to remove, but they overhang multiple property lines, and are too close to anything to be dropped in one shot. Just glad I have this guy and have worked with him before and know he does a good job. We have tree guys asking to quote us all the time because they spot them from the road. Last guy quoted me $5,700 for ONE of the trees. He was in disbelief when I politely explained he'd quoted well more than twice what my normal tree guy was going to charge.
Honestly, I'm surprised the grass in that area is still that green for this time of year.
Insurance covers more than $500, the cost is not really limited. It will cover the “reasonable cost to drop” AND “$500 for haul away per tree up to an aggregate of $1,000 for multiple trees *for haul away* However you’re right, the tree has to land on or damage a covered structure or driveway or handicap walkway.
So typically the tree company will invoice it as $$$$$ for “drop” and $500 for haul away to get all the costs covered - I’m a property adjuster.
Super speeders intro of you doing shenanigans that you never do anymore…
Looking forward to seeing the wall go in. Its going to look amazing I'm sure. Keep up the great content and have a Blessed Merry Christmas
I'm going through the same shit with my place. Just the quotes for drainage works came in so expensive that it was literally half as much to buy my own excavator. Now at least I can do all the work myself and have the equipment to do a whole bunch of other tasks too. And all said and done, I can sell the machine when I'm done and get most of if not all my money back.
Those shutters though 🤔
Keep eye on your septic filed. The heavy equipment and impact of the trees could have caused some damage which may not show right away
What's happening with the shutters? did they melt?
Climbers have two flip lines that have steel cores. When they have to go around a branch they attach the second one above the branch and unclip the lower one. They are never not secured around the trunk
Rob what's wrong with your shutters or is that the lens on your camera🧐
Forget new trees Rob, just get some big ass rocks put in.
Blocks people from driving up or stealing cars and keeps the kids safe if someone veers off the road and crashes
Rob, these vids are the reason why I watch your channel. Real life stuff that happens to Rob...Merry Christmas.
Seems like an abnormally large amount of stuff happens to rob. Must be a ton of bad karma.
Those vinyl railings are supposed to be just an outer vanity shell for an actual lumber railing. If you don't they will eventually sag and warp and break. I've seen them done both ways and boy the wood support is a hell of a lot better.
Now that the trees are gone it’s time for a fence!
whats up with the faux window shutters curled up on the top corner?
You'll find the answer in the word "faux".
20k? Now that's a spicy meatball!!
Time for a visit to the 305 Rob, hope you and your family had a great holiday 🎉
Are you gonna install a 10' tall security fence in the front?
The drone shots and other angles are nice as. Hasn't gone unnoticed.
Hey Rob,are your window shutters curling?
Rob you could do a small berm if you have extra dirt on site, or can find a deal on some it will help with some road noise, and then the trees on top with the stone wall mentioned would be solid.
Rob are your window shutters supposed to be curved? Am I just not as with it?
As the owner of a landscape construction company anyone worth their weight in salt would happily warranty trees installed anytime. We always offer a one year warranty on everything, regardless of timeframe installed
You made a nice pathway for someone to take your car again now, and the $30,000 gate worthless.
Were your shutters designed to be bent out at the tops and bottoms? 4:30
As a 20 year home owner I never wanted trees on my property. Some cities & States you are responsible for those trees and always remember those branches on top are long and the root are just as long in the ground.
Rob I work in the tree industry my advice would be to grind the stumps. You can use the wood chips to fill in the hole and lay some top soil and sod over them. If you pull them it’s going to leave massive holes where you’ll have to haul a lot of dirt in. Not to mention how hard it’s going to be to get them out.
As he's replacing them, wouldn't that also depend on those replacement trees? I'm not in the industry, but remember a video showing how tree transplants were done. So a funky machine with a big 'ice cream scoop' to carve out the root ball, and lift & support it to the transport. So presumably planting the new trees is going to need holes large enough to fit those roots. So thinking it may be better to dig out the stumps, save the soil and wood chips and use those to bed in the new trees. Otherwise it'd be filling the holes and digging back out again when the new trees arrive.
Rob, what's going on with those window shutters on the house? They look like they are warped and about to fall off...
Came to the comments to see if anyone had an answer for this haha
Answered in Pinned reply, waiting to see if architectural company makes it right.
@@superspeeders hope they take care of you. They don’t know who they’re messing with if they don’t :)
Stone wall with smaller trees will be 👌
As someone who owns a landscaping company (together with my father) specialized in removing/trimming trees, the way these guys did it was pretty irresponsible. The tops of the trees should have been removed first, by cutting it and lowering it slowly with a rope/cable. This was a super risky way of going at it. In the Netherlands (where I am from) this would never be accepted!
Hope you sold the wood. Just plant a hedge. Grind the stumps. That’s good plant food. Build a concrete wall with wood forms. Makes a nice wood pattern. Stain the concrete brown. Plant a hedge on each side with some semi mature ones. By the time you get the wall done it will be spring and you can plant. Put some IR beams on top of the wall to detect if anyone hops it. Don’t use blocks. Make sure you dig out the base and put 4ft underground with steel. Keep cars from going through it. Take a look at peoples wall hedges in Los Angeles. You’d have no idea there was a mansion behind some. Probably some type of evergreen hedge. Wouldn’t want it to thin out during the winter.
I wonder how much money they made off that old growth wood
Grinding stumps is not expensive and surprisingly simple. For all those trees…$300-$500 tops! You can do it yourself without any training or danger. You’re welcome.
yeah get those quotes. My neighbor wanted to have a tree that is right on our property line removed and I agreed. He got a quote for $1000. I had two more quotes that included trimming the arborvitae and removing another tree and it was $400. They did it right. Took out the big maple from top to bottom. And also the other things. So we split the $400 since we both got trimming and the other work done on our properties and $200 each was great. Your trees were a lot larger, but as others have said, trees are normally taken down from the top in sections. Even the maple which was much shorter than your trees was taken down that way. You shouldn't go all lumberjack on them.
Maybe I missed it in another video but are your shutters supposed to be more warped than the 2x4s at HomeCheapo? Also that is not the way to take down trees that large unless you are in the middle of a forest, they should have climbed up taking of branches all the way to the top then dropped the trunk in sections as they climbed back down. Obviously much more time and skill but 1,000,000 times safer and less likely to damage something.
thats why he was quoted 3000
Yeah, I could have done what they did.
Like they say: “You get what you pay for”. A pro tree service come with an articulate basket lift. Cut branches. Cut top trunk in multiple sections and then cut the main trunk. But then, Rob would not have made a video about it. The branch hitting the ramp is worth watching the video.😂
Time to step up work on the driveway and maybe some elevated side blocks now that you can pass cards through the grass. Stay safe!
U have such a beautiful place. And omg that’s crazy money but everything is so expensive these days.
It looks like Mr Spaghettis window shades were cooked past Aldente and are now soggy and floppy
When you see how much that one tree broke apart. They were dying.
Got the Salvador dali shutter special
I feel like I’m on drugs looking at the house the shutters are bothering me lmao
0:55 What's up with those shutters Rob? They're warped beyond belief???
Rob, I have a guy in NJ that did a great job planting the trees in my back yard for a great price, very professional GC and I used him for tons of other repairs as a result. I used to live in Fair Lawn but I recently moved. Let me know if you're interested in his info. You can also ask around because he's very well known and reputable in the area.
sure you can email rob@superspeeders.com
That’s a good deal. They were smart taking it down like that, it was so brittle it was very dangerous otherwise.
My dad owned a tree service business. No way we’d have dropped those trees that close to the house without topping them off or at least laying plywood against that porch. I can’t believe they did that.
Mr. Spaghetti is about to find out the trees were on the wright of way and belong to the county.
I doubt that they were. That concrete definitely is in the easement, hence the county removing it.
When planning to remove stumps versus grinding them, if the arborist would have cut them and left ~8’ or so, you could have had a bulldozer push the remains of the tree instead of having to dig them up.
Would doing it that way somehow rip up wires and pipes if the roots were tangled onto them?
A bulldozer wouldn’t be practical at all right there. Would destroy either the yard or street, if not both.
@@K2489S if you are drunk then yes 🤐 i would probetly use a excovator because it is the perfect tool that does not destroy anything if the driver knows what he is doing
It didnt exolode🤣🤣🤣arborests are the roofers that got out before the money got good🤣🤣
Makes getting that driveway gate look completely pointless
Trees are being replaced, and a small stone wall added.
I'm telling ya, your life is basically like Seinfeld.
So now people can drive around his gate
The wall & trees are worth the expense. The privacy & safety factor alone.
Always pull the stumps, never grind. One day atta time.
right on. thieves can drive right around the 50 thousand dollar gate now..
Going to look great!
I love those people who think a house is such a great (financial) investment!
I saw you on CBS News with the same jacket. Hope you enjoyed your trip
Should've measured distances and lopped off the top maybe 20 feet, but hey, I've never held a chainsaw in my life.
A nice big fence would be cool too if it’s allowed, otherwise hedges
$3,500 is a good deal for that amount of work. A rock wall along the front of the property will look great.
Those shutters melting from the sun would piss me off.
Whatever happened to Rob's RockHenge plan? A bunch of 2000lb rocks placed exactly 2ft narrower than a car, to prevent his Spicy Meatball exotics from being dinner to a car thief.
All of this will be worth it. It will look great. A bit more scenery. A bit more privacy. Just small touches to a home make it that much better.
And fwiw, the guy who climbs for us typically takes the limbs off on his way up to avoid branches flying like that
Why couldn’t you just cut the trees shorter?
I don’t know too much about trees
Topping a tree has the risk of simply killing the rest of the tree, If you mean topping before falling the rest then it's probably why the one company quoted 2k higher and the rest just measured and said it will fit and quoted $3500
Wow they cut the whole tree down at once? You'd think they were in the forest
You should have the wood milled into trim for your house.
I'll bet they would have made some really nice, durable wood shutters!
Dammmm hope that septic is ok , those was some large tree's to let them free fall
I agree with other comments, can’t believe they didn’t at least top those that tre branches are heavy branches.
Glad you got those trees out of the way ....now Johnny Criminal can drive your car across lawn and out when they come to steal it....😂🤣
The shutters are melting off the house?
*1:42** what is going on with your Window Shutters?*
Rob what’s with the warped window shutters?
I’ve never seen a rich guy with worse luck 😂
Come on Rob that flimsy ass rail was better off being torn off by a branch than by some elderly resting on it, do it right the next time :)
