Idiots Say Tankless Water Heaters Don't Need To Be Winterized

- Don't listen to the people on UA-cam that say you don't have to winterize tankless water heater. Yes tankless water heaters freeze and bust. I replace the copper box in a Gerard water heater that clearly froze and busted.

Just finished this old class A Georgie Boy, lots of little items, had some floor damage, hole in the roof and generator maintenance, been a bit slow but steady, good video as always my friend. Thanks
You are welcome Bill.
You get mentioned in an upcoming video.
@@hillbillyrv cool hopefully in a good way lol not some guy says you don’t have to winterize your on demand water heater lol
Thanks for your service, fixing our tank ‼️ Hopefully it won't happen again. 😊
It was my pleasure.
Thanks for taking on this tankless job for us Kenny.
(Sorry)
BTW, I also learned the hard way about the arrows. Turns out they're important on brass valves too.
I didn’t know how important the arrow was. I do now.
I had the same thing happen to me because my propane ran out when we left the RV in the winter for a day too long!. It was a costly lesson that I will never forget. I bought a new one and installed it myself. It was pretty easy because the model was the exact same unit. The bursted hole was in the same place as this one you replaced. I kept all the electronic parts for spares. I figure the difference was about half of my cost to have those on hand. Arrows are there for a reason was the lesson of the day! Great video!
Lack of propane can be a problem. 😊
Tankless water heaters fix a “problem” that realistically isn’t there. If you have 10 people that need to take a shower back to back just wait 5 minutes between each shower and the issue is resolved. They just unnecessarily complicate a simple task.
These things are over engineered.
My Girard tankless heater froze and busted all over the place. Two of the coils on the copperbox busted just like yours did. I carefully closed the split and TIG welded them back together. Also the relief valve pushed apart. I pushed it back together and it held. Also the strainer on the water pump shattered, and the faucet cracked. I bought it used from a guy that said he never used the camper. I believe he never used it, but he definitely put water in it.
That happens a lot. Glad you got it fixed.
Had the same thing happen to me, now I take the inlet and outlet water lines off to drain the heater. Haven't had any more trouble.
There is a guy on UA-cam that says you don’t need to winterize tankless water heaters. My customers prove him wrong constantly.
Sounds like that seller didn’t read the instructions from Girard. It has a section regarding purging and the use of antifreeze if storing the unit. But if it is being used, it doesn’t require this. Per the instructions: “If you wish to operate the water heater in potentially freezing conditions the model GSWH-2 has a built in thermostat that will start the burner whenever the temperature of the Heat Exchanger falls below 38°F and will automatically shut off when it senses a temperature in excess of 58 ° F”. Of course this requires power is available, the unit is on, and propane doesn’t run out. I’ve used our Girard WH in freezing temps without issue, but it wasn’t being stored.
These folks just forgot to winterize it in time.
Maybe the probes have o rings when probes are purchased. Question mounting the is it in a water vein or a indent for temperature and gets its reading that way.just a thought.great video’s.
Probes go into the water.
Well makes me glad to have this Aqua-Hot system lol . That is a beast of its own with a lot of stuff going on with it.
You can send a lot of money if you have to pay someone to work on one of these units. I'm thinking the old fashion heater and hot water systems are not as costly but again there are pros and cons . Thanks for sharing the video with me.
There are pros and cone for all of them.
Great video as always Kenny !!! I haven’t had the pleasure as of yet to work on one of them Girard’s . Thanks for sharing the important information details about the O Rings , customers sometimes don’t realize how frustrating these little parts & pieces are . It would be way to easy to supply a little bag with a few extra o rings & screws . Murphys Law I guess 👍👍🇨🇦✌️🇨🇦🔧🔧
I don’t know why they can’t include them with the copper box.
Glad your staying busy sir lioks like the drill is holding up well. Nice video.
Still loving the Milwaukee tools.
Okay my question is cost of a new one plus your labor verse what you did here, I kinda of think they should be pretty close. I have the same unit in my Vegas by Thor (need I say anymore) I found that my pump wasn’t giving me enough flow to start it, change the suction hose on my pump and I’ll be dammed it work. Not happy with mine as the temp can not or is hard to adjust, so I just set at 102 and shower at that temperature. 😵💫😵💫👍🤬
I am finding out that is how most people use them.
Great work as always. Thanks for sharing Don
Thanks buddy
I installed a valve like that on my old fifth wheel so I could shut just the toilet off and I didn’t pay attention to the arrow and it did the same thing.
I couldn’t believe it wouldn’t shut off at all being installed backwards.
I think it was a good video. I've never put one in but I think I could do it watching your video. But I've got 55 years of maintenance experience under my belt. I'm from Northeast TN. Are you from around there? I was born and raised in Church Hill. About 15 miles Southwest of Kingsport. I left in 72.

I found out the hard way on way own rig. One of the Cooper tubes busted but luckily I was able to take it to a welder and the soldered the hole. Seems to be holding strong.
I don’t think this hole could have been repaired.
Great video I have Girard heater on our camper
Don’t let it freeze.
Thanks for the video. This is helpful.
It happened the same to me during these past cold days.
I see that you got a copperbox replacement. I contacted the manufacturer and they would not sell the copperbox as a part. The only choice is getting the new water hear.
Any idea where can I get it as a replacement part?
Thanks for your help!
Gerard was bought by Lippert. We get them from Lippert.
What would be your recommendation on how to winterize one for fulltime living
If you are living in it you can’t winterize it. Most newer ones have freeze protection while you are staying in RV. Winterize it with the rest of the water system if it is going to be stored.
How did you get the three bolts, above the burner, off the tank?
It sure ain’t easy to do. I know they are a complete bear, but I also don’t remember. This was a while back.
Hey Kenny how does one winterize just drain it or blow out with air good video 😊
I always use anti-freeze.
I have never seen a video on not winterizing the tankless, but I have seen and know that you don't have to bypass them, just run the antifreeze thru the unit and then flush in the spring.
Oh, they are out there. Seen one just a couple of weeks ago.
The shop i work for won't replace the box, we only replace whole unit. They dont want the liability and don't want to take the time. Idk. Just what they do.
That’s sad, but I understand.
No experience with tankless. Is the general idea that it super heats the water quickly with propane flame ? I wonder if it typically uses less or more propane than keeping a tank warm all the time
I don’t know if they use less or more propane.
Do the new probes come the new o rings?
I don’t know. I have never ordered new probes.
How did you diagnose that it was the copper box?
The giant hole was a clue.
My question is wouldn’t it be cheaper just to replace tankless heater ?
It only cost $60 to have the copper tube on mine soldered.
I don’t think so.
Got to be $500 minimum between the service call, labor and replacement box.
Nope
Higher ???
