Learned this when I got my first Vinten tripod 4 years ago and have been doing this ever since, including on my O'Connor 1030Ds. That's why I hate fluid heads with stepped counterbalance (Sacthler, Manfrotto, Miller, Benro). I'd only want to use/own O'Connor, Vinten, or Cartonis for this very reason.
Fluid drag should only be for your feel, not to compensate for the lack of a stepless counterbalance.
I also have the O'Connor 1030D. How does the Cartoni/Vinten behaves in comparison to the O'Conner when doing smooth panning with long tele lenses?

can some one tell me what that plate is called "Dove Tail" I tried looking on line to see where i can get one and was not successful. I have a Blackmagic Ursa that is a big camera and I think this plate would hlep me out alot
Dovetail is the term used for the balancing plate that is industry standard when attaching to a tripod.
There are 2 main types of quick release plates used in the industry;
ENG (news/docu) style known as a VCT plate like this one;

And the dovetail/bridge plate set up more common on feature/commercial filmmaking like this one;

The main differences is the ENG style plate was designed with old news cameras in mind were the weight and balance of the camera was pretty much set (you could change 2/3" lenses but the balance never shifted much). Emphasis on speed to go from tripod to handheld.
With cinema cameras you have everything from small lightweight primes to very large heavy duty 10x zooms which would drastically change the center of balance of the cameras (plus accessories such as wireless video, follow focus, matteboxes, etc). It allows a wider range of balance but the trade off is that it takes longer to go from tripod to handheld (which is not as big an issue in feature filmmaking).
The baseplate that BM sells with their Ursa is the ENG style which makes it a bit tougher to balance on a tripod. We'd recommend taking a look at the different offers by Wooden Camera as we find them to be both affordable and very high quality;
