I think its due to cards like Power Spray and earlier DP stuff like Tyranitar SF, Ampharos SW, and Alakazam MT that allow for interaction during your opponent's turn.
@WhimsicottTCG the amount of disruption is definitely a factor, also later on during HGSS the mechanic of using 2 cards as 1 for Legends resemble the way ygo extra deck works. A more consistent and fast game makes it closer to each other but that might just be power creep bs
I actually top 16’d Alabama States in 2010 with an Ampharos/Raichu/Luxray deck; it was super techy, and I was ultimately playing it due to budget constraints, but it performed well enough in the hands of a 12-year-old me that it’s the entire reason Ampharos is currently my favorite Pokémon. I think I played 2 Ampharos Prime and then a 1-1 split of Platinum and Guardians Rising to help spread damage. It was so much fun, I appreciate you talking about this strategy!
@ for sure! I believe I did a tournament report for it in a forum on Six Prizes, so I’d have to do some serious digging, but it was such a fun event. It’s probably what got me into, and has kept me into, card games.
Also, just realized I said Guardians Rising; idk why I said that, it was technically the POP promo Jamming Ampharos I was playing, which was just a reprint of the one with Jamming from Secret Wonders.

Thank you for bringing back my childhood! Started early DP and stopped playing TCG and eventually the video games around BW2 but w TCG Pocket coming back, it’s great to see the sets I grew up with represented :)
These are really awesome videos on the history of the game! I got in right when SM: Guardians Rising dropped and I’m pretty confident that is MY greatest set of all time! I’m looking forward to seeing you cover it!
Your editing is really good! You’ve really found your stride and style- I’m still working on that myself. Nice job, I mainly play yugioh but I’ve been loving your videos
Fantastic video. Platinum was my first prerelease and I have fond memories of running Toxitank and Dialgachomp all the way up to rotation day. The level of complexity that the SP engine added to the game made for some of the most fascinating play patterns in the game's history, and it's kind of a shame that all of this detail was dialed back so dramatically starting in HGSS and later BW. If you don't mind me taking requests, I would like to propose EX Firered & Leafgreen as the next Greatest Set of All Time. Blastoise EX, Electrode EX, and Pidgeot defined the 2004-2006 era of Pokemon TCG, while Nidoqueen, Raticate, and Exeggutor still tear up retro TCG tournaments to this day (This is before we even get into the trainer cards).
Seeing this delcatty makes me think of how the og draw delcatty would synergize with this one. Is there any chance you can cover some gen 3 era cards? Id love to learn more about that era of pokemon.
i think they would need their own collective label before they can get on the level of SP pokemon but heres hoping at the very least i hope they make cards specific to specific trainers like cards revolving around Ns pokemon (like with trifrost kyurem and the garchomp that relied on the cynthia supporter)
I don't think so. From what we've seen already, this looks to more along the lines of the Generation 1 Owner's Pokemon which were segmented into their own archetypes (Blaine's, Giovanni's, etc) with their own support. Part of what made SP so unique was that it was all one archetype that could be played 20 different ways
I don't plan on covering newer sets for a couple reasons: 1. History. newer sets don't have a history yet that needs to be explained. My channel is about history mainly. 2. Too many cards. Lost Thunder took me 2 weeks to finish bc the modern sets have too many cards. Not all of them are as good as something like Lugia VSTAR, but there's 60 cards that did one placement at one event that make it past the honorable mentions
Platinum-era gives me Yu-Gi-Oh vibes that I can't really explain in words

That's super cool. If you ever find the list, it'd be cool to try that out

Cyrus wasn't playing when this dropped...
Cyrus was the king
@@WhimsicottTCG your king was whooped by a 10 year old, like all the rest

I've covered Guardians Rising before!... though for some reason I forgot to mention Choice Band in the video
I just want to say that this series is amazing ❤
Thanks for the support :)

@@prestigedDL thanks for the kind words
Fantastic extensive video on one of my favorites sets to date!
Thanks for watching!
the set icons for platinum base and lost origin are almost identical
Yes they are both based on Giratina

EX Fire Red and Leaf Green will probably get covered someday. The next set has already been decided.
Thanks for watching though and sharing though!
The solo purugly G deck was wild.
I need to know more that sounds crazy
great video and streets of rogue mentionned, i love it !
This mf is spitting
This was the peak of Pokemon card design
Dropped right in time to watch as I eat lunch
3:06 thats a hand trap. In Pokemon. As a Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh fan thats insane
This HAS to be the best "base set" there is for the game!
The best base set is probably Base set
@WhimsicottTCG I mean playability wise and for creating a healthy engaging format
@@epicness877 I think he's just debating the definition of Base Set here.

@@sakuraanime122 sometime down the line I'm sure I'll get to geh 3
very fitting given we are getting the psudo return of owners pokemon in an upcoming set

New, Greatest Sets of All Time HYPE!
In my cube the double Ampharos combo is a popular pick and had two wins so far
@@Esos44 jamming ampharos goes insanely hard in my 2 player cube

With owners Pokémon coming back to the TCG do you think we will see any similar mechanics to SP?

Imagine dialga G with the neutralization zone ace spec
Blocks stadiums being placed over it AND denies lost vaccum
Back in the day Dialga used to lock the snowpoint stadium in play which gave it more HP. Similar kind of stall tactics
I went so hard on booster packs for this set

37:07 too
Happens
silver tempest when?
