I was born in Ghent and with my parents immigrated to the USA as a young child. Later in life, while in the USAF and living in Germany visited Ghent and Belgium several times as I still have family living in Belgium. 39 years later, we came back with our grandchildren to visit family and see where grampa came from. My daughter, son in law, and grandkids love Ghent! Well Done!! 👍🍻🇧🇪😘
Glad to see you guys tasted some real belgian food. Way too many folks think we only have fries waffles and chocolate. But Belgian food is horribly misunderstood by allmost every foodblogger out there..
Wittekerke is a fictitious Belgian coastal resort in a Flemish TV soap with the same name. This series ran for 15 years on VTM from 1993 till 2008 . The beer was an agreement between brewer Bavik and the TV producers.
Best guide for Ghent! One of the only videos that shows Gravensteen Castle, which is the best tourist attraction I have ever been to (comedy auto tour). I also tried Waterzooi and it was so good I had it the next night too! Thanks!
Hey guys 😊 we booked a trip to Ghent this morning and just found your video! It's got us really excited, thanks for sharing! (new subscribers now 😊) Mac & Sarah
Nice vidéo ! you eat at my friends (Hamid) his restaurant , he owns allso next door restaurant Kuip van Gent , the cooks work on traditional way and with high quality . i love to see people happy and enjoy life , for shure in my hometown . Succes and prospérity to both of you .
We're spoiled in Belgium. I live about 20' drive from Ghent and studied there for 3years. If there is one town in Belgium I could see myself living, it would be Ghent for sure. I would'nt say forget Bruges, but Ghent is more vivid and authentic to me. And the food, well you can't go wrong with any food really, in Belgium. Good choices, the Waterzooi en de Stoverij (stew) ;-). Beer...well you really need to step out of that Witbeer thing and discover a whole new universe ;-). Cheers
You two work well together and it looks like you truly enjoy each others company. Great insight to the city. There is something called The Gent Card you can get if your a tourist. It's 30 Euros but you get into all tourists spots for 48hrs, free public transportation and a free bicycle rental for 24 hrs. If you are going to be doing the touristy thing it seems well worth it. Thanks for your video.
We've booked3 nights in Ghent in August and I cannot wait! Did you consider getting the city pass whilst there? Also, does the city light up like Brussels at night time? Enjoying your videos - we're doing z4 nights in Paris so will watch those next!
That's so cool, glad you're enjoying the videos. Ghent is one of our favourite cities, we've just always enjoyed our time there. We actually didn't look at the city pass, but that may be a good idea. The city is beautiful at night, there are definitely lights on but I can't remember if it's similar to Brussels. Thanks for watching!
language tip: Waterzooi pronounce the a short and ooi a bit lik (b)oy - ex. hooi (straw) like hoy - dutch is not the most difficult language in the world but fairly complex with the vowel sounds one of the most practice required. Keep on exploring (in general)!
hey thanks for the info guys we're visiting this place next week ! but how much is the food cost ? i heard it's expensive compare to other European countries :-(
Turkisch restaurants are about 10-12€ pp without drinks. Belgian restaurants 20€ pp. And if you want to splash it, on the other side of the castel there's an argentine restaurant called pampas rodisio. It's 30€ all you can eat and it's amazing if you love Meat.
Hey! It's expensive compared to Eastern Europe, but very similar in cost to other Western European countries like the UK, France & Germany. You can eat out 15 euros a person, but as always supermarkets are pretty cheap. Have a great time!
Were you eligible for student discounts with the regular US. student IDs? I heard of the international student card but was hoping the University given ID's of the US worked.
It's my hometown and it's such a great place to live in. Love to see that you guys enjoyed it as much as you did! Happy to see that more and more people are discovering Ghent rather then only visiting Bruges and Brussels because there is so much more to Belgium.
I've been to all three of those and Antwerp - which other cities would you recommend? :) I was thinking of going to Leuven or Mechelen, perhaps, but I would love to hear your suggestions :)
love Belgian Witbier! we went to the little town of Hoegaarden last time we were in Belgium to visit the brewery there. looking very much forward to visiting Ghent for the first time in just over a month from now. thanks for the preview!
I love your video! I am coming to Gent this November to pursue my PhD! Which is why I was checking out the videos of Gent! Thanks for the lovely coverage :)

A University ID should be fine - but we can't verify 100%
Do people speak English in general?

Ghent is only a 30 minute train journey away, a day should be enough for you to see the main sights!
