    It makes me happy seeing you two together enjoying yourselves. Thanks to Vitali for taking you to Cafe Leffe and selecting such interesting beers for you! I don't drink beer, but the Orval and Kriek both sound especially delicious and refreshing. I'd definitely give them a try. 😋 All the food looked scrumptious and really got my mouth watering. The architecture was amazing--particularly all the gilt accents. Thanks for a wonderful day in Brussels!

    You should probably try the mitrailette sandwich and probably also more frites sauces. I think you have missed some very unique friet sauces in the netherlands by the way: The frietje oorlog which is a combination of 2 sauces: Sate sauce and mayonaise with onions (you have to sometimes ask for the onions to be added though) and a Speciaal sauce which is curried ketchup sauce with onions and mayonaise.

    I loved Brussels!! I was there for work and stayed in the hotel right in the middle of town it had a McDonald’s attached to it lol, and right across the street they had a place where I could get bah mi and some good pho and to the right there was a bakery where I could smell fresh baked bread in the morning and would get some on sat, we we’re actually there during Easter which is amazing how different they celebrate it, it was wonderful.. at night time it’s light up with lights.. I was about 6 minute walked from the cathedral, it was so beautiful.. and the seafood omg, also they had this great bar that had a elephant as a sign lol, we stayed at the Grand place.. I miss Brussels, I loved it so much I was looking at apartments lol

    I'm glad you guys tried out that cherry lambic (Belle-Vue Kriek). Fruit lambics are boozy desserts in a bottle and I love them all.
    I just chuckle whenever someone here in the USA, who otherwise is fine with mayonnaise on certain foods, tries to tell me that pommes frites with mayonnaise or similar sauce is gross. The Belgians have it right and, well, they're the ones who came up with the dish, so maybe try it before denying it. The match of that unctuous sauce with the crisp shell and fluffy inside of well-made frites is heavenly, at least to me. Now, I WILL use catsup -- but only if I've mixed it with mayo (and maybe a little yellow mustard) first to make some homemade fry sauce!
    Samurai sauce is mayonnaise, sambal oelek or harissa (pepper sauces), catsup, and sometimes other ingredients... would be right up my alley!

    • @flitsertheo
      @flitsertheo 4 місяці тому

      Belle-Vue is somewhat frowned upon as an "industrial" brewer, especially as there are so many good artisanal Kriek beer brewers around.
      I prefer tartare sauce, which is mayo with spices (far from Samurai spicy though). Mayo tends to taste bland if you eat too much of it , you avoid that by using tartare instead.

    Kriek beer is called so, because of its cherry flavor. In old Dutch (which is spoken in The Netherlands and the Flemish part of Belgium) it means " Cherry" (kriek) .I like your video's a lot.

    • @filipv.5019
      @filipv.5019 8 місяців тому +1

      Not exactly: cherries are called KERSEN in Dutch.
      KRIEKEN look like cherries, but the taste is sour. They are not eaten as a fruit, but used as ingredients in food like Jam, beer. Most KRIEK beers taste sweet because of added sugars, but some more sour.
      A typical Flemish dish is frikadellen met krieken, which is a sort of meatloaf, served with warm ‘krieken’ in syrup. You can find this that canned in the supermarket.

    You mentioned the guilds on the Grand'Place. There is actually still guilds (think like old professional association, corporate but since the medieval era) or at least one : there is the Brewery Guild on the n°10, one of the oldest of the world and almost all Belgian breweries are part to it.

    I am married to a Belgian. My hubby goes back to Belgium every year to eat and drink real beers! His favorite: Frites and Brochettes. And Belgian beers, of course!
    There is also, Filet Americain. There is nothing "American" about this Belgian specialty because...It's steak tartare spread in a French baguette! It's so delicious.
    And he always bring back Pralines for me...
    By the way, I think the first item that you ate is not Cramique but it's called Craquelin (Sugar bread).
    Cramique always have raisins in them. Mahalo for tasting all the goodies. We are homesick now...Lol

    there is probably already a comment saying this, but just in case: about the city hall...
    Did you know there are two mistakes in this city hall? They are very visible in your pictures. The first one is that both sides of the building aren't the same length, while it was built in a barok time when symmetry was highly valued (though today it is not the case anymore). The second one is much worse: the main door is off centre. You can see the big column descending from the tower, ending just above the main door, but not at it's centre.
    Legend says that when the building was finished and the architect noticed that he killed himself by jumping from the top of the tower.
    Also the little sculpture on top of the tower is Saint Michael killing a dragon; He's one of the two protector saints of the city (with the other being Sainte Gudule (french name, Sint Goedele in flemish)).

    You don’t know what Gilden houses are? A Gilden house is an old kind of company house. In the early days an occupation like a leather worker would unite them selves in a Gilde. That Gilde guarded the quality of the profession and only if you were good enough you could become a part of it. Of course you had to pay for it too. With that collected money those Gilden houses were built.

    "Kriek" is a name in dutch, it's not french. Kriek is a cherry variety from the region in Brussels that does not taste sweet but sour. The Kriek that you're drinking there is not the traditional because it has added sugar. So the fruit "kriek" looks like a cherry, but tastes sour and the fruit is lighter red than a cherry. The name is used in Brussels, in Flanders, but not in the Netherlands (they call it sour cherries).

    Loved it! I’m Belgian and had to correct a small thing that’s very sensitive for Belgians. Brussel is t the capital of Flanders ;) its the capital of Belgium. The capital of Flanders (Dutch speaking part) is Antwerpen and of Wallonia (French speaking part) is Namur Brussels has it own region (bilingual) and lays in Flanders but doesn’t belong to either Flanders or Wallonia ;)
    That aside it’s great videos. But know that every region in Belgium has different kind of waffles. And it’s a dessert here not like in America eaten at breakfast or dinner.

    Brussels is the hellhole.
    It is more unsafe than Chicago and New York together.

      @@michelwolfs2273 non je suis du region de Bruxelles.
      A Anvers, vous avez des attaques à l'explosif (il n'y en a pas à Bruxelles). En fait, que ce soit Bruxelles, Anvers, Gand, Ostende ou Liège, la Belgique toute entière est un hellhole.
      La Belgique est le "pays du tiers monde" de l'UE avec les impôts les plus élevés, les prix du gaz, de l'électricité, des télécommunications, de l'alimentation, etc. les plus élevés...
      La Belgique est un hellhole en elle-même, avec des politiciens incompétents qui s'en mettent plein les poches en Flandre, en Walonie et dans la région Bruxelloise ; un pays avec 5 gouvernements dont 4 sont redondants
      .
      Heureusement, il y a encore une chose qui est bonne en Belgique : nos soins de santé de qualité et abordables.
      La France, les Pays-Bas, l'Allemagne et l'Autriche font bien mieux que la Belgique. Si nous n'avions pas eu des soins de santé de qualité et abordables ici en Belgique, j'aurais déménagé en France depuis longtemps.
