    Nice film. I have become fascinated by this city recently. It's demise is one of the great untold stories of the 20th century. The city looks so beautiful, but I can't help but be drawn towards the people in this film, going about their everday business in the last few days of peace. How many of them would die in the air raids, evacuation/expulsion, fighting in the city or elsewhere in the war? And those who survive will need to move hundreds of miles from home. Tragic. They paid a high price.

    Well, there is one good thing in Kaliningrad's architecture: trees. At least in 1987-2007 it was a giant botanic garden. I was born by the Schloßteich, and I love the mix of german, russian, polish and baltic spirits.

How futile wars destroy everything in its wake. There is no room for blame or name. Just lessons to be learnt. Never again should such dictators and disasters happen. Thanks Shumastrik.

    It's really a shame that a beautiful city such as this ("The Pearl of the East") ended up being destroyed. Lots of people to blame - Adolf Hitler for starting a war against Russia, Winston Churchill for giving into Stalin and ordering the RAF to bomb Konigsberg even though it was not a military target, the German Gauleiters who misinformed their people forbidding them to evacuate as the Red Army approached etc. The replacement city of Kaliningrad shows the world what Soviets offered culturally

    Looks quite strange. I am Russian (Russian German) born in Moscow and proud of defeating of Nazis by Russian Army. But... my native town is Königsberg and not Kaliningrad. It is pity that it was lost forever. And in any case it is difficult to blame anybody other than Nazis and Hitler personally.

    In 1944 königsberg intensively bomb the British Royal air force. After that, the city burned for several days. The first bombing was carried out on the night of 27 August 1944, the 5th Group, Royal air force, composed of 174-Lancaster bombers. The airfields from which the bombers took off, were at a distance of a thousand kilometers from the object. The first RAID was not particularly successful, most bombs fell on the East side of the city. Shot down four aircraft. Three days later, on the night of 30 August 1944 in the air up to 189 Lancasters of the 5th air force unit. They dropped 480 tons of bombs on the city centre. German fighters shot down 15 bombers

      Typical explanation of the current situation of the city by the Russians. I am a Pole - after the Germans we got 2 large centers - Wocław and Szczecin, and 15 cities with a population of over 100,000. Wrocław was destroyed between 70-80% - Szczecin in 70% and the rest of these cities were destroyed in the urban substance in the range of 30-95%. Now take a look at what Polish cities look like. Built - restored - they were restored to their former shape - even though we had no money and our capital was destroyed in 95%. We did it in parallel. Of course, a significant percentage of it could not be restored - it was mainly due to the fact that we had over the heads of communists who did not like the restoration of German monuments and often their opinion was final. Exactly - now let's look at Kalilingrad. The city was destroyed no more than the Polish one - and what does it look like now? The only thing that was left there was the cathedral on the island and a few individual objects scattered all over the city. THIS NOT ALLIAN BOMBARDINGS led to the present appearance of the city - but the Soviet government which pursued a deliberate policy of removing everything German. These are facts and stop blaming others - because then you only confirm the stereotypes about you. Your government has led to the situation that now Konigsberg, instead of the pearl of the Baltic, on a par with Gdańsk, has become a nasty communist reminder of the USSR's policy.

    Konigsberg had more than 700 years of history, as a Baltic, German and Slavic culture and architecture, a beautiful mix, before the British first in 1944 and above all the soviets in 1945-47 erase from the Earth his identity, culture and most of the architecture. Many cities were partially or totally destroyed in WW2 Europe, but very few suffered the fate of Konigsberg: its Identity and History was for the most part erased, even the name of the city, squares and streets were changed to russians names...Very, very sad indeed...The cultural autorities of the EU should´ve long ago demanded the russians autorities to permit a reconstruction of the Identity and architecture of Konigsberg, as well of the return to the original name of the city and its streets, as well as in the whole former Eastern Prussia...In any case, Konigsberg and the Prussian culture and identity should never die..!!

      Эй, алё! Что за выражения? Русские стёрли город? Русские ничего не разрушали, но и вкладываться в чужую культуру было нелогично. Каждый восстанавливает своё, а не чужое, в первую очередь. Нет больше Кенигсберга, как нет Иерусалимского храма или как нет древней Греции или Атлантиды. Давно пора понять, что есть закономерные вещи и есть возмездие. But the Allies also committed mass murders by targeting innocent populations. It's our greed, pride and ignorance that caused this city to crumble and I fear with the nukes around, it's possible this horrendous fate will the the future of all the remaining paradise.

    Nostalgic video with nostalgic music to accompany, an excerpt from "Songs of Travel", by Ralph Vaughan Williams. A pity the beautiful city of Königsberg could not have been saved, as at least some of the city could have been repaired and restored, similar to the way much of Dresden's old town has now been despite its near total destruction near the end of the war. But now we have the hideous Soviet city of Kaliningrad, with not much more than the rebuilt cathedral and Kant's tomb to remind us of what the old East Prussian capital had once been.

    Where one feels loss, there is revenge. Do not seek revenge! The land will always be there. Countries are merely chairs in a game of musical chairs - know that the only constant in life is change. Nations and flags are merely symbols we created to unite and to divide - they are figments of our imagination. Countries did not exist 5 hundred years ago, so why is national pride so important today? You've been duped! We've all been duped! While nations fight, the capitalists who funded both sides profited - regardless who won or lost. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow will be the same. We are all humans, and belong to the human race. Love each other as brother and sister, for all men and women are children of God!

    • @Gesundheit888
      @Gesundheit888 6 років тому

      You make a lot of sense but on some things I totally disagree. You assume national pride was not important 500 years ago. Right, there was no national pride but there certainly was tribal pride. The tribe you belonged to need to be preserves or you were done. So, you defended your tribe. You stuck to your tribe. You loved your tribe. It is like a family. Your family comes first.
      That does not mean you hate other families or you hate other tribes, not at all, you simply know where you belonged. That is how it is with a nation.
      Although now a nation is no more than a farm we live on....(different subject...)

    Karaliaučius or Königsberg aren't Russians and all of Prussia aren't land of Germany, Russia or Poland, because Prussia are free contry since 12-10 thousand years ago. Their brothers are Lithuania and sisters are Latvia (Balts). But Russians still holding our lands and we must set this beautiful country free and protect forever.

    let them stay in their current countries. who needs war again?

  •  11 років тому +6

    If germans didn't start war against Russsia,Konigsberg would stay where it is,Russians did what every normal country would do - protect its territory integrity and honor. And if your enemy is baricaded in some city, than there is no other choice than bomb it.I am not advocating russians here, but try to think objectivly -war is most ugliest act of humans and wait to something beautiful stay intact, thats a bad bet.
