This here reminds me of my childhood, right down to the fat tire ATCs. Your son will forever appreciate the time and effort you spent to show him how to build/repair/innovate things and will likely never have to pay a mechanic.
I certainly hope so. Many teens are high tech savvy but when it comes to working with their hands, not all are mechanically inclined. These days everything is made somewhere else therefore skilled jobs are becoming absolute. Thanks for watching.
Awesome!!! I did this same project at nearly the same time. Crazy... Mine was to a 1988 Yamaha Blaster stripped frame with good plastics and tires for $50. I ended up with a little over $300 in it. Original front brakes work great. So sold the rear caliper for $50-60. (I forget) Had to cut the frame and reweld it some. Mounted up the Predator 212, and bought an ebay torque converter. The blaster has the sprocket on the left so I didn't need the jackshaft. I used the original 520 chain, just bought a different front sprocket to fit converter. Fun little ATV for a kid.
+locomojo0485 The good thing about this conversion is that we can always swap another motor if this one kicks the bucket. Glad you had the same idea and tackled the same project as we did. Cheers.

nice job bud good thing is when your son get tired of the automatic and wants to shift and go faster you can find either a kx65 2stroke motor or a 4 stroke 80 motor and mod it on there
What all did you use to make your jack shaft and make it work with the predator I'm currently trying to make something like that work since my sprocket on the rear end is on the right side
Happy New Year. Great father and son project. I have a few questions. I want to do this project for my son and this is what I’m starting with. I have a complete 2005 ETON Viper 90cc setup. I want to replace the stock engine with my Honda GX 270 engine. Is there a link I can buy the parts so I can put the whole setup together like yours? I like yours because it’s real simple and it just works. I have seen people cut half of the Eton engine to retain the transmission but I rather just sell the engine as a whole to someone who wants to work on it. I have everything needed minus the hardware to make it work.
I just finished a very similar build on a smaller 110 atv with a honda gx160 swap. Im curious why you went with a jack shaft. I used the same clutch assembly you did and was able to connect my stock chain and sprocket. My 6yr old helped me on the project and the thing runs like a dream. Im glad to see some one had the same ideas as i did and you did a really great job I'd like to show you some pics of my build some time and swap ideas
I've used jackshaft because the rear sprocket was on the right side of the quad. Maybe I could of flipped the rear axle but there is no guarantees that everything would of lined up correctly. Original sprocket had different pitch therefore had to get another sprocket for it. Now that I have a jackshaft on this thing, changing out sprockets will give me low end torque. Would love to check out your ATV. What's your preferred method of sharing pics?
Email works for me Danielpatrick72@gmail.com Yea that makes since on the jack shaft now. I was a little worried I might have over looked something or had a design flaw on mine.
I got a question. I want to build custom atvs and go karts. But what's with all the sprockets and pulleys ? Why are they necessary and what do you gain ? I always thought you could just hookup straight from clutch to sprocket
Eduardo Navas You can set up your rig however you like. There’s no set rules on how to build your toys. If you are referring to torque converter when you say pulleys then it works like a small transmission giving you smooth acceleration unlike centrifugal clutch. It also doubles your speed to approximately 50mph compared to clutch (only 25mph). Jackshaft with gears was installed in this video because engine shaft was on the left side of the ATV and the rear sprocket was on the right side of ATV. Jackshaft made it possible to offset the chain from one side to the other. Good luck with your projects.
+Brandon Johnson Glad you liked our project. I agree that kids nowadays spend too much time playing video games and watching TV. At least many of them come across my videos and just maybe i will inspire someone to build similar fun toys with their dad's. Cheers
+JERSEY General Even though it takes some work to convert a frame but the up side is that motor is always replaceable/ swappable. Good luck with your project and let us know how it went. Would love to check it out on youtube if you ever upload it. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
Ali Almaliki If your chain perfectly aligns with rear axle than you don’t need the jackshaft but as you can see from my project, there was no other way for me to off set the chain without the jackshaft. Let me know how your project turns out. Good luck.
Someone said it looked way under powered? Not sure how they figure that... that little quad originally came with a little 49 or 90 cc engine. That predator is a 212 cc engine! More than double the displacement of the 90 cc and 4 times the displacement of the little 49 cc. And with the set up you have, just changing out a couple sprockets could make that thing either scarey fast or a frackin stump puller! Awesome project.
Thanks Chad for supporting and sticking up for our project. Just because it doesn't go 100mph doesn't make it underpowered. Sometimes kids troll in comments section not knowing that with little mods this thing can be fast enough to do some serious damage. Currently it will do about 40mph which is plenty for us. Appreciate you kind words. Cheers.
Yeah, we don't have any snow in our neck of the woods. Have you seen or heard anything about Ebay engines called Powerland PD420? whats your take on it? some kid told me that they are just as good as Harbor freight engines but much cheaper ($179.99)
great project that quad would be good on trails personally i would put a oil cooler on and some lights for trails and long days working around will have good torque with that setup and take the governer off there for like compressors and jetwashes n shit to keep a decent powered throttle response
+Jaden Meyer Now its easy to swap our motor for a new one. Thanks to Disposable engine we can do donuts all day ua-cam.com/video/CBL18Wu_syE/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video. I just got a go-kart that has a 3 wheeler rear axle and wondered what I should have for a sprocket on the axle. What is top speed on that?
+Boomer's Backyard Its all up to you. if you want low end torque than go with 72 tooth sprocket but we went with 54 tooth and its sufficient enough to get us around.
Could you please make a Video about how you made that Torq Converter, I need to make the same rear driven backside drive system for my ATV and future Chinese converted ATVs...This would be very helpful...Thanx...Ron
Hey I have a few questions.... What is the too speed on the ATV? What is your throttle wiring set up? And also I have a suggestion; you could ago a little more power by removing that exhaust on the tip of your exhaust extension. Those stock exhausts are extremely restrictive and cut down on power a lot. If you removed it and kept you home made exhaust (without the original exhaust on the tip) the ATV would run a lot better and be able to breath a lot easier. If you think about it it's like putting a folded up hanker chief over your nose to prevent dust from getting in your nose. It makes it incredibly hard to breath. You can do all sorts of other mods to these small 212 cc engines to make great power
Thanks for advice Austin, i will try to ride it without exhaust tip next time we go. Top speed is about 40 MPH. My throttle set up is basically a cheap chinese thumb control lever from eBay and standard cable that came with it. In the near future during our next oil change i might remove the governor to get more power out of it.
It can go approximately 40 miles per hour and with a kid riding it there should be no issue climbing hills unless oil sensor is not disconnected and will shot down the engine at a steep climb. 30 series torque converter can be found on eBay or amazon for around $100. Good luck
+Mauricio Lopes Yes sir, my son and i we build stuff together. He gets to learn new skills and in get to spend quality time with him. Thank you for watching and have a great day.
+1995dresser Im not sure what you meant but the jack shaft hangars are welded to the frame. The torque converter is attached to the motor. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Thanks
What i did was i made a groove at the end of the jack shaft with cut off wheel (grinder) and used C clip to secure it in place. C clips or retaining rings are a great alternatives to threaded jackshaft and hold everything in place just as good.
Using a spring pin center punch( Harbor and Freight - $3), some waxed based lube (Boelube), and starting off with a #40 drill bit (For drilling a pilot hole) is great way for drilling. I prefer pneumatic Sioux drills.
Thanks Matthew for sharing your thoughts and giving me your advice on drilling. Since we are on the subject, have you ever sharpened your drill bits by free hand? i know that its unorthodox way to sharpen the bits but I've recently tried and they are as good as new again. who needs a drill doctor? right? Anyways, thanks for watching our projects and have a blessed day.
I have tried sharpening drill bits before just larger ones on a bench grinder. I have used the drill doctor before and I don't think it works all that great. I work at place where drill bits are an expendable item. When They get dull I toss'em in the scrap metal bin.
Thats true that they are inexpensive but in my case, I've learned how to sharpen them without the drill doctor by hand and they are as good as new. Maybe its my frugal side talking but if i can get more out of a drill bit i will. Cheers Matt.
The reason for the oil while drilling a hole is so that the drill bit won't get too hot. If the drill bit gets too hot the cutting edge of the drill bit will melt away making it dull. Keep your drill bit cool while drilling.
If anyone's wondering the predator 212cc engine only has the same power as a 49cc engine this is because it should be used as a lawnmower it has the torque if 212cc but not the power
How would you compare this 4wheeler with a regular 200 cc factory 4wheeler? I ask because we have a 200 cc that is junk and I've wanted to do this exact same swap. It'll be used as a utility hauling stuff around the home place and have held back because was afraid it would be too weak for work.
These harbor freight motors are kind of weak compared to factory 200cc engines. It might be better with 420cc motor but for the price, might as well find a motor at a junk yard from honda ATC three-wheeler or something. Horizontal shaft motors are capable of carrying people around but not enough juice to haul trailers or other loads around. I hope that helps. Cheers
+balabay77 Thanks a Lot. I love the little Clonda engines and put them on everything I can. They're so dependable like if they don't start quickly you're out of gas or gas has soured from setting too long. One of the biggest plusses is that they run on fumes. We ran out of gas and put an antique Shell sign beside it and it ran all day. Not quite but they really stretch the gas compared to their competition.
+Phil Lowman I agree with you there. Full tank of gas gives us about several hours of fun. We ride our mini bikes and this quad for quite a while till my kid calls it a day. Even though we consider these engines disposable, we haven't killed any of them yet (bought 6 of them). Usually if they last for 90 days than they should be alright for a while.
I used to do this for alot of my friends bikes that blew up or came with no motor. it works great I would recommend using a torque converter for the clutch it has better response and would give u a great advantage over the stock centrifugal clutch for hauling and performance and dosent cost much more and water does not make it slip like theses set ups when riding thru puddles
Great build. Glad to see a father son project. We are looking to do something similar. I have a question for you. The jack shaft coming off the torque converter seems a lot longer than factory. We may have to create something similar to get ours to work. How did you get a longer jack shaft? Also, the other jack shaft ; where dd you find that? I really enjoyed watching. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Hello John We replaced original bolt that holds driven pulley on the torque converter with 10 inch hardened steel 5/8 jackshaft with keyway (eBay sells they for around 18-20 bucks). You can find them with threaded ends but I chose to jerry rig my jackshaft with C clips. Made the grooves with cutoff wheel and slipped the C clips in place. They hold everything just as good as any nut would. The other jackshaft that was welded on can also be found on eBay for around 42 bucks. If I knew that our video get so many views maybe I would of made it much better lol. Glad you liked our sloppy project and thanks for commenting. Cheers.
How did you turn the jack shaft around the other way? Did you have to get a different shaft? I need this exact set up for my 3 wheeler and I need help. Thank you for your time.
Nick Jones Yes, I bought a longer jackshaft with 3/16 keyway and made a groove with my cutoff wheel all the way around the shaft. Then I’ve bought a C clips or retaining rings and placed them in the groove. Made spacers out of pipe. What you can do is buy already threaded jackshaft on both ends at OMB warehouse and all you’ll need to do is cut the spacers to your specs out of tubing and you’ll be all set. Good luck with your project.
Nick Jones Yeah, most projects takes lots of time to finish especially when you’re waiting for some parts to arrive. Sometimes when you can’t find parts you just jerry-rig your own parts. I should of included some type of explanation on how I made the offset in the torque converter but figured it would make the video too long. Let me know how your project turns out. Cheers
Thanks a million sir and glad you liked it. Let us know how your project goes and if you upload it to youtube then we would love to check it out. Cheers
Hey, I've been enjoying your various projects and like some others have said here it's also cool to see fathers and sons doing these kinds of things together. Keep it up. On this project I do wonder if you're going to have problems with the transmission output shaft. It was a neat idea to use it the way you did, but I'm betting it should have a support bearing and bracket on the free end to bear the side loads. I think eventually you're going to have trouble with the transmission output shaft and bearings. Easy enough to add though. Heh, also with the mud bogging, you might want to throw a transmission cover on there. Oh, and where you took out the headlight, you should paint it black and install a "Larson Scanner" in there. ;') Keep sharing these projects and inspiring other dads out there.
Hello Chris I like your idea with the Larson scanner and maybe I'll install it on my future project. As far as torque converter bearings go, they are cheap and easily replaceable. I bet that these bearings will outlast the internal components of driver pulley or driven pulley. I agree that cover is a must on this tranny. This ATV is our "village bicycle" and it gets abused on regular basis. So far engine and tranny works flawlessly. Glad you checked out some of our videos and appreciate your input. Cheers mate.
Hey, I hope that didn't sound like criticism. Just joining in on the fun. ;') Keep up the great projects. Oh, and for anyone wondering what a Larson Scanner is or where to get one.... www.evilmadscientist.com/2009/the-larson-scanner-kit/
Christopher Gaul No worries I welcome constructive criticism and try to improve upon it. Obviously, many of our projects are made out of junk and are not meant to last forever therefore even if they break or die it gives us another reason to post new and improved videos. Thanks for the link to Larson scanner I'll have to check it out. Have a blessed day.

I know why he was taking his time on that bumper lol!
That kid is gonna be a master at mechanical and you'll be able to feel proud of that
+Bassmaster2069
I hope that my kid won't be afraid to fix, modify build or create anything. Thanks for your support.
great father son project. just a tip: for cutting foam go to a thrift store and pick up a used electric knife. works a treat
Jeff Ferguson
Thanks for the awesome tip Sir. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Cheers
What all did you use to make your jack shaft and make it work with the predator I'm currently trying to make something like that work since my sprocket on the rear end is on the right side
Nice Quad, cool to see what people can do with just a chassis. I want to fix my moto-4 now...
Yes sir, it was worth buying it to get it running then to see it being parted out or scraped.
Email works for me Danielpatrick72@gmail.com
Yea that makes since on the jack shaft now. I was a little worried I might have over looked something or had a design flaw on mine.
nice build and great to see you build it with your son
+Meow kitty Appreciate your support.
Proper job thank you very kindly for sharing this with us you have inspired me I still enjoy the paper on the floor while painting :-) :-) :-)😛😛😛😛
Good deal! Safety tip: Buckle that helmet, it won't work if it comes off in an accident! Ride to live, live to ride!
Thanks for your advice Sir. Cheers
I got a question. I want to build custom atvs and go karts. But what's with all the sprockets and pulleys ? Why are they necessary and what do you gain ? I always thought you could just hookup straight from clutch to sprocket
Eduardo Navas
You can set up your rig however you like.
Another ride. I will have fun riding this.
Good dad, but whos gonna talk about the magazines he was painting on😂😂😂
awesome build glad to see a kid not playing games all the time lol
+Brandon Johnson
Glad you liked our project. I agree that kids nowadays spend too much time playing video games and watching TV. At least many of them come across my videos and just maybe i will inspire someone to build similar fun toys with their dad's. Cheers
You have cool dad!
Its so nice to see this teamwork!
+FiixYYY
Glad you liked our joint effort and collaboration on these projects. Cheers.
Awesome video.. I found one on cl for 40 bucks too.. gonna do the same thing.
+JERSEY General
Even though it takes some work to convert a frame but the up side is that motor is always replaceable/ swappable. Good luck with your project and let us know how it went. Would love to check it out on youtube if you ever upload it. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
Can you just hook up the chain directly to the back wheels with having to do the thing at 8:07????
Ali Almaliki
If your chain perfectly aligns with rear axle than you don’t need the jackshaft but as you can see from my project, there was no other way for me to off set the chain without the jackshaft.
Cheers.
Probably not a lot of snowblowers in your area but they are a great source for cheap horizontal shaft engines 8-13hp in my area.
Yeah, we don't have any snow in our neck of the woods. Have you seen or heard anything about Ebay engines called Powerland PD420? whats your take on it? some kid told me that they are just as good as Harbor freight engines but much cheaper ($179.99)
I wonder why he loves painting so much😏 and don't say you welding is bad it is amazing
+Matt Dun
Thanks for your support but I'm far from perfect welds. The more i make these bikes the better i get. Cheers.
great project that quad would be good on trails personally i would put a oil cooler on and some lights for trails and long days working around will have good torque with that setup and take the governer off there for like compressors and jetwashes n shit to keep a decent powered throttle response
I blow up my quad because of that
+Jaden Meyer
Now its easy to swap our motor for a new one. Thanks to Disposable engine we can do donuts all day ua-cam.com/video/CBL18Wu_syE/v-deo.html
Man wish I could paint like that awesome using the stuff around u like the exhaust think I'll try something like that on my 212 go cart
Thanks for the video. I just got a go-kart that has a 3 wheeler rear axle and wondered what I should have for a sprocket on the axle. What is top speed on that?
+Boomer's Backyard
Its all up to you. if you want low end torque than go with 72 tooth sprocket but we went with 54 tooth and its sufficient enough to get us around.
+balabay77 removing the governor is a great way to gain power. Just make sure you don't run it at full throttle for extended amounts if time
+Austin Reaux
Yes sir.
i live right down the street from there literally you have to go through a Walmart parking lot to get there love your videos
How fast can it go? How well does it climb? Where'd you get the torque converter and how much was it?
It can go approximately 40 miles per hour and with a kid riding it there should be no issue climbing hills unless oil sensor is not disconnected and will shot down the engine at a steep climb. 30 series torque converter can be found on eBay or amazon for around $100. Good luck
Great job, looks like an awesome father and son's project.
+Mauricio Lopes
Yes sir, my son and i we build stuff together. He gets to learn new skills and in get to spend quality time with him. Thank you for watching and have a great day.
Very Nice Job How is the Jack shaft supported on the end ??????
+1995dresser
Im not sure what you meant but the jack shaft hangars are welded to the frame. The torque converter is attached to the motor. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Thanks
Just at the end of the 5/8 shaft where the collar is maybe I did not see it ??? Thanks
What i did was i made a groove at the end of the jack shaft with cut off wheel (grinder) and used C clip to secure it in place. C clips or retaining rings are a great alternatives to threaded jackshaft and hold everything in place just as good.
now that the build is done, for about 200 more dollars you can modify that engine to get even more out of it. Nrracing has kits. Nice build!
+Braden Coonce
Indeed. there are many kits out there to modify predators but for now my kid is satisfied with it as is.
Using a spring pin center punch( Harbor and Freight - $3), some waxed based lube (Boelube), and starting off with a #40 drill bit (For drilling a pilot hole) is great way for drilling. I prefer pneumatic Sioux drills.
I bought my drill at the pawn shop for $20. Works great! Awesome project! Build on!
+julio lausell
Indubitably. Nicely explained. Cheers
Awesome job. What was the original engine's size on the rolling chassis?
I'm not sure because we got it without the motor but most likely it was a 90cc to 110cc ATV
Thanks for the reply, I will look out for a chassis of that size. I have a spare motor + CVT I could use.
Sure thing bud. When you get done with your project, upload it to YT so that i can check it out. Love to watch other builds come to life. Cheers
If anyone's wondering the predator 212cc engine only has the same power as a 49cc engine this is because it should be used as a lawnmower it has the torque if 212cc but not the power
Awesome to see a dad and his son working on something together. Just put a paint mask on your son when he's spraying, his lungs are still developing!
the best part is that you. evolve you son and everything congrats on that good........... father god bless you
Thank you Sir. Appreciate your support.
Cheers
+balabay77
Thanks a Lot.
+Phil Lowman
I agree with you there.
I used to do this for alot of my friends bikes that blew up or came with no motor.
it works great
I would recommend using a torque converter for the clutch it has better response and would give u a great advantage over the stock centrifugal clutch
for hauling and performance
and dosent cost much more
and water does not make it slip like theses set ups when riding thru puddles
and they make a predator 310cc vtwin with electric start
with 15 to 20hp and with a few mods 28 to 30hp
I can understand his love of painting bumpers. I'd paint some bumpers for you. lol
haha the reason he likes to paint bumbers is because he gets to see the playboy pages 😂😂💯💯
Hello John
We replaced original bolt that holds driven pulley on the torque converter with 10 inch hardened steel 5/8 jackshaft with keyway (eBay sells they for around 18-20 bucks).
Nick Jones
Yes, I bought a longer jackshaft with 3/16 keyway and made a groove with my cutoff wheel all the way around the shaft. Good luck with your project.
balabay77
Man thank you for your help. That’s a huge help in my project. I’m slowly but surely getting there.
Nick Jones
Yeah, most projects takes lots of time to finish especially when you’re waiting for some parts to arrive. Sometimes when you can’t find parts you just jerry-rig your own parts. I should of included some type of explanation on how I made the offset in the torque converter but figured it would make the video too long. Let me know how your project turns out. Cheers
I LOVE THIS BUILD IF YOU COULD PUT PART IN A COMMENT MY SON HAS A BRAND NEW 212 ALREADY
This is awesome, looks like a project for me this summer
Thanks a million sir and glad you liked it. Let us know how your project goes and if you upload it to youtube then we would love to check it out. Cheers
2:38 👏 my pops would do the same love to see it 😂
any one else laughing at the guys magazines he puts down to paint on at 2:33 😅😅😅😅
Hey, I've been enjoying your various projects and like some others have said here it's also cool to see fathers and sons doing these kinds of things together.
Oh, and where you took out the headlight, you should paint it black and install a "Larson Scanner" in there. ;')
Keep sharing these projects and inspiring other dads out there.
Hello Chris
I like your idea with the Larson scanner and maybe I'll install it on my future project.
Just joining in on the fun. ;')
Keep up the great projects.
Oh, and for anyone wondering what a Larson Scanner is or where to get one....
www.evilmadscientist.com/2009/the-larson-scanner-kit/
Christopher Gaul
No worries I welcome constructive criticism and try to improve upon it. Obviously, many of our projects are made out of junk and are not meant to last forever therefore even if they break or die it gives us another reason to post new and improved videos. Thanks for the link to Larson scanner I'll have to check it out. Have a blessed day.
did u hold the acceleration button on max?
That is how you raise your kid up right.
Thanks Jacob i agree. Trying to teach him basic skills and to be more mechanically inclined. Cheers
