    This here reminds me of my childhood, right down to the fat tire ATCs. Your son will forever appreciate the time and effort you spent to show him how to build/repair/innovate things and will likely never have to pay a mechanic.

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  8 років тому +2

      I certainly hope so. Many teens are high tech savvy but when it comes to working with their hands, not all are mechanically inclined. These days everything is made somewhere else therefore skilled jobs are becoming absolute.
      Thanks for watching.

    Awesome!!! I did this same project at nearly the same time. Crazy... Mine was to a 1988 Yamaha Blaster stripped frame with good plastics and tires for $50. I ended up with a little over $300 in it. Original front brakes work great. So sold the rear caliper for $50-60. (I forget) Had to cut the frame and reweld it some. Mounted up the Predator 212, and bought an ebay torque converter. The blaster has the sprocket on the left so I didn't need the jackshaft. I used the original 520 chain, just bought a different front sprocket to fit converter. Fun little ATV for a kid.

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  8 років тому

      +locomojo0485
      The good thing about this conversion is that we can always swap another motor if this one kicks the bucket. Glad you had the same idea and tackled the same project as we did. Cheers.

      +ShadowGuidR airbrushing and spray cans are just about the same thing. They require the same technique. Same goes for using a spray gun for a car or an airless in a house. The technique is the same. Just a different spray depth.

    before anyone says something bad about those 6.5 hp engines , first, i am 54 now and at 45 years old i was racing cclonne cclasses, , avg about 74-78 mph, 20 laps at 6400 rpm wwith a cost of about 350 - 400 dollars for a engine, i or anybody else cannot complain, if you go to arc or similar you can get parts to make that clone engine put out 17 - 19 hp easy enough, and that young man will have a ride, the break in is the most important,, have fun

    Happy New Year. Great father and son project. I have a few questions. I want to do this project for my son and this is what I’m starting with. I have a complete 2005 ETON Viper 90cc setup. I want to replace the stock engine with my Honda GX 270 engine. Is there a link I can buy the parts so I can put the whole setup together like yours? I like yours because it’s real simple and it just works. I have seen people cut half of the Eton engine to retain the transmission but I rather just sell the engine as a whole to someone who wants to work on it. I have everything needed minus the hardware to make it work.

    I just finished a very similar build on a smaller 110 atv with a honda gx160 swap. Im curious why you went with a jack shaft. I used the same clutch assembly you did and was able to connect my stock chain and sprocket. My 6yr old helped me on the project and the thing runs like a dream. Im glad to see some one had the same ideas as i did and you did a really great job I'd like to show you some pics of my build some time and swap ideas

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  9 років тому

      I've used jackshaft because the rear sprocket was on the right side of the quad. Maybe I could of flipped the rear axle but there is no guarantees that everything would of lined up correctly. Original sprocket had different pitch therefore had to get another sprocket for it. Now that I have a jackshaft on this thing, changing out sprockets will give me low end torque. Would love to check out your ATV. What's your preferred method of sharing pics?

    I got a question. I want to build custom atvs and go karts. But what's with all the sprockets and pulleys ? Why are they necessary and what do you gain ? I always thought you could just hookup straight from clutch to sprocket

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  6 років тому

      Eduardo Navas
      You can set up your rig however you like. There’s no set rules on how to build your toys. If you are referring to torque converter when you say pulleys then it works like a small transmission giving you smooth acceleration unlike centrifugal clutch. It also doubles your speed to approximately 50mph compared to clutch (only 25mph). Jackshaft with gears was installed in this video because engine shaft was on the left side of the ATV and the rear sprocket was on the right side of ATV. Jackshaft made it possible to offset the chain from one side to the other. Good luck with your projects.

    Someone said it looked way under powered? Not sure how they figure that... that little quad originally came with a little 49 or 90 cc engine. That predator is a 212 cc engine! More than double the displacement of the 90 cc and 4 times the displacement of the little 49 cc. And with the set up you have, just changing out a couple sprockets could make that thing either scarey fast or a frackin stump puller! Awesome project.

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  9 років тому

      Thanks Chad for supporting and sticking up for our project. Just because it doesn't go 100mph doesn't make it underpowered. Sometimes kids troll in comments section not knowing that with little mods this thing can be fast enough to do some serious damage. Currently it will do about 40mph which is plenty for us. Appreciate you kind words. Cheers.

  • @AReaux2000
    @AReaux2000 8 років тому

    Hey I have a few questions.... What is the too speed on the ATV? What is your throttle wiring set up? And also I have a suggestion; you could ago a little more power by removing that exhaust on the tip of your exhaust extension. Those stock exhausts are extremely restrictive and cut down on power a lot. If you removed it and kept you home made exhaust (without the original exhaust on the tip) the ATV would run a lot better and be able to breath a lot easier. If you think about it it's like putting a folded up hanker chief over your nose to prevent dust from getting in your nose. It makes it incredibly hard to breath. You can do all sorts of other mods to these small 212 cc engines to make great power

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  8 років тому

      Thanks for advice Austin, i will try to ride it without exhaust tip next time we go. Top speed is about 40 MPH. My throttle set up is basically a cheap chinese thumb control lever from eBay and standard cable that came with it.
      In the near future during our next oil change i might remove the governor to get more power out of it.

    • @AReaux2000
      @AReaux2000 8 років тому

      It can go approximately 40 miles per hour and with a kid riding it there should be no issue climbing hills unless oil sensor is not disconnected and will shot down the engine at a steep climb. 30 series torque converter can be found on eBay or amazon for around $100. Good luck

      I have tried sharpening drill bits before just larger ones on a bench grinder. I have used the drill doctor before and I don't think it works all that great. I work at place where drill bits are an expendable item. When They get dull I toss'em in the scrap metal bin.

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  8 років тому +1

      Thats true that they are inexpensive but in my case, I've learned how to sharpen them without the drill doctor by hand and they are as good as new. Maybe its my frugal side talking but if i can get more out of a drill bit i will. Cheers Matt.

  • @juliolausell4399
    @juliolausell4399 8 років тому

    The reason for the oil while drilling a hole is so that the drill bit won't get too hot. If the drill bit gets too hot the cutting edge of the drill bit will melt away making it dull. Keep your drill bit cool while drilling.

    How would you compare this 4wheeler with a regular 200 cc factory 4wheeler? I ask because we have a 200 cc that is junk and I've wanted to do this exact same swap. It'll be used as a utility hauling stuff around the home place and have held back because was afraid it would be too weak for work.

    • @balabay77
      @balabay77  8 років тому

      These harbor freight motors are kind of weak compared to factory 200cc engines. It might be better with 420cc motor but for the price, might as well find a motor at a junk yard from honda ATC three-wheeler or something. Horizontal shaft motors are capable of carrying people around but not enough juice to haul trailers or other loads around. I hope that helps. Cheers

      Thanks a Lot. I love the little Clonda engines and put them on everything I can. They're so dependable like if they don't start quickly you're out of gas or gas has soured from setting too long. One of the biggest plusses is that they run on fumes. We ran out of gas and put an antique Shell sign beside it and it ran all day. Not quite but they really stretch the gas compared to their competition.

      I agree with you there. Full tank of gas gives us about several hours of fun. We ride our mini bikes and this quad for quite a while till my kid calls it a day. Even though we consider these engines disposable, we haven't killed any of them yet (bought 6 of them). Usually if they last for 90 days than they should be alright for a while.

      I used to do this for alot of my friends bikes that blew up or came with no motor.
      it works great
      I would recommend using a torque converter for the clutch it has better response and would give u a great advantage over the stock centrifugal clutch
      for hauling and performance
      and dosent cost much more
      and water does not make it slip like theses set ups when riding thru puddles

    Great build. Glad to see a father son project. We are looking to do something similar. I have a question for you. The jack shaft coming off the torque converter seems a lot longer than factory. We may have to create something similar to get ours to work. How did you get a longer jack shaft? Also, the other jack shaft ; where dd you find that? I really enjoyed watching. Thanks for any help you can offer.

    • @balabay77

      Hello John
      We replaced original bolt that holds driven pulley on the torque converter with 10 inch hardened steel 5/8 jackshaft with keyway (eBay sells they for around 18-20 bucks). You can find them with threaded ends but I chose to jerry rig my jackshaft with C clips. Made the grooves with cutoff wheel and slipped the C clips in place. They hold everything just as good as any nut would. The other jackshaft that was welded on can also be found on eBay for around 42 bucks.
      If I knew that our video get so many views maybe I would of made it much better lol. Glad you liked our sloppy project and thanks for commenting. Cheers.

      Yes, I bought a longer jackshaft with 3/16 keyway and made a groove with my cutoff wheel all the way around the shaft. Then I’ve bought a C clips or retaining rings and placed them in the groove. Made spacers out of pipe. What you can do is buy already threaded jackshaft on both ends at OMB warehouse and all you’ll need to do is cut the spacers to your specs out of tubing and you’ll be all set. Good luck with your project.

      Yeah, most projects takes lots of time to finish especially when you’re waiting for some parts to arrive. Sometimes when you can’t find parts you just jerry-rig your own parts. I should of included some type of explanation on how I made the offset in the torque converter but figured it would make the video too long. Let me know how your project turns out. Cheers

    Hey, I've been enjoying your various projects and like some others have said here it's also cool to see fathers and sons doing these kinds of things together. Keep it up.
    On this project I do wonder if you're going to have problems with the transmission output shaft. It was a neat idea to use it the way you did, but I'm betting it should have a support bearing and bracket on the free end to bear the side loads. I think eventually you're going to have trouble with the transmission output shaft and bearings. Easy enough to add though.
    Heh, also with the mud bogging, you might want to throw a transmission cover on there.
    Oh, and where you took out the headlight, you should paint it black and install a "Larson Scanner" in there. ;')
    Keep sharing these projects and inspiring other dads out there.

      Hello Chris
      I like your idea with the Larson scanner and maybe I'll install it on my future project. As far as torque converter bearings go, they are cheap and easily replaceable. I bet that these bearings will outlast the internal components of driver pulley or driven pulley. I agree that cover is a must on this tranny. This ATV is our "village bicycle" and it gets abused on regular basis. So far engine and tranny works flawlessly. Glad you checked out some of our videos and appreciate your input. Cheers mate.
