I bought a CX about 3 weeks ago. I have put about 250 miles on it and I love it. At this point I would happily rescue any CX barn find and work to get it running so others can ride this thing. Every day I feel like I want to just get on it and ride it all over the US on an epic road trip. It's the only bike I've owned that makes me feel like that even though by any objective standard it's the worst bike I've ever owned. But I love it.
Great job! I love how you were just yourself and that made the video fun to watch! I’m about to rescue a bran find as well, and hope I can resurrect it as well. Thanks for sharing! #shiftshaft
I just bought a '79 CX500 custom for $800, with 18k miles and in really nice shape cosmetically, all original and complete, but in need of a few items from sitting since at least '04. Looking forward to working on her and getting her back on the road. I've only ridden one of these once before, about twenty years ago, so it's going to be a fun change from riding my old sportster for so many years.
Hi I just pick up one for 700in not to bad of condition does need the carb done and the saddle need some repairs but in all this will be a good bike for next year
What a great video and your amazing perseverance to get that engine running again. I have an 81 that’s been sitting a shed for the last 18 years with only 17,000 on it but will it ever start again or run again…that’s the question. Those were very unique bikes in their time.
@@jeepingneatus Well that bike is with me up here in the North…Toronto, Canada actually. It was originally bought from Camrod Motorsports in NYC and when I moved to Canada I brought it with me in 1995. The bike had never been keep in the cold though a winter until it went into a friends unheated storage shed. I went to see it the other day because it now has to be moved and I was saddened to see the surface rust and corrosion that has taken place. I’m now planing to hopefully give it to someone who will have your positive attitude in bringing it back to life. Again when watching your video I loved your positive spirit and determination to not give up, and when it started, I think all of us who watched gave a solid cheer of victory!
@@gregoryedwards8918 Thanks! I am sure some one can bring it back to life or use it to bring another one back to life. They are a neat bike. I just love the engine configuration. I hope you find someone to give it a chance at a new beginning!
@@jeepingneatus Thanks, that’s what I’m hoping also. I will be showing “this video” to whoever gets this Black Beauty. Something about bikes from our youth that border almost on love affairs. Thanks again for your video and positive spirit.
Looks good, restore it...my brother owned one in 76, I owned a GL1000, very similar in design, GL was heavier, but lower, CX was tall, but handling was better, cam chain issues on fist batch, but was rectified in second, the post office used hundreds of them for corrier services , very much a love or hate machine and earned the nickname, plastic maggot..here in the UK, but a classic now...
Was looking at earlier comments and noticed you found it new home. Good luck on your 650 tracker build. Shame about the hack on the harness, but ive seen much worse. If the new buyer takes the codes off the ignition cylinder, you can have a new functioning key in days. If a owner puts just a little time and money in that CX, it will run for decades. Your fuses were blown because of bad, dirty or corroded connections, and could have been fixed with little trouble. Best wishes.
I sold this bike but I do have my GL650 that will get the carbs cleaned and new gaskets here in a couple months. I will make sure to document the process.
might just have been the solution to not go to the shop for a fuse, though in that case they should've used less threads. lile one ore two 😅it'll blow just like a fuse
@@jeepingneatus the vacuum line coming from the right carb, engine intake side, did you have that blocked off? Should I have it exposed to fuel vapor? I’m just running a water bottle fuel tank.
I bought one years ago [19-o-long] after seeing the video and every ones comment , need to get a [ harness, switch, battery and C,D,I ] and go from there
Hey brother I wanted to ask actually if you were going to sell it or if you're going to keep it? Awesome video by the way brother! I was super happy for you when you got her started!
So I actually have sold it. I am working on building a street tracker out of a GL650 and having the CX500 was really splitting my focus. Thanks for the comment. I may look for another CX500 in the future
How do Americans have so many awesome bikes being neglected and junked?? I have found 1 (O. N. E.) cx500 for sale here in the Philippines. Granted, its only $1k, but this was next to impossible.
@@jeepingneatus pretty dry state, huh? The Philippines is like Florida (climactically, the people are sane) so bikes rust to dirt if you leave them out. I'm pretty much only interested in the engine at this point, but the one I found seems to have been decently stored if not taken care of otherwise. If I could buy up some CBs and CXs and ship them back, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but then there's freight and customs which charges 100% on the sticker price from 81 instead of the resale price. Only rich people have the older models here and they usually neglect them because they regularly upgrade.
I have noticed, Hondas want to run. If there is even a slim chance to run, a Honda will take it. And that's why I love them.
I agree!

I actually sold this one as I have a GL650 already. Great bike :)
Came across a mint condition 79 cx500. Love it. Would like to convert it to something modern but its not bad as it is

Would you ever do a video with a more detailed carb cleaning? Doesnt seem like there's a ton out there

Good video but wish I could have heard the motor when it started to run instead of the loud music over it.
Any more progress? I was given a 79' CX500 for helping someone move and I'm going through the same process you were.
I went through the bike and made everything work amd reupholstered the sear and sold it
It was a good bike but I three bikes so this one ended up getting sent to a new home.
Had a 1980 ran the stuffing out. Was faster than 71 CB 750.

Try without oil.

I got an 81 CX only idles with choke applied and doesn’t like to rev above 4K thoughts? Just cleaned the carb
Do you have pod filters or the stock filter? Seems like your bike is getting to much air.
Also, are there any cracks in the intake manifolds?
stock filter, definitely some cracks in the rubber. Gonna spray it down with some starter fluid to see how bad the leaks are. Thanks man
@@jeepingneatus the vacuum line coming from the right carb, engine intake side, did you have that blocked off? Should I have it exposed to fuel vapor? I’m just running a water bottle fuel tank.
For testing sake block the vacuum line off and wrap some electrical tape around the cracks in the intakes
hey man, i bought one of these and mine is also producing some blue exhaust smoke. Is it the piston rings leaking oil and how bad is this issue?
Mine stopped smoking after I ran it a few times. If it doesn't stop the. Yes, could be worn rings.
Hi, it could be that the rings gaps are not opposed, or just worn out.

The terminology "barn find" gets thrown around way too much.
Unless you found it in or around a barn!
