1984 was the high point of eighties pop in all its glory and this takes the prize for one of the gems of the year, and now all time greats. There are those who might say it wasn't 1984 and they might be right, that's not the point. 'Jump' cracks and fizzles with the creative energy of the decade when anything seemed possible musically as artists, producers and musicians pushed the boundaries of new technology and all it had to offer. We were lucky to grow up in a time when despite political tumult with far reaching consequences still being played out today, it was clear much of the music being produced was made to last, and so it has proved. Gary Skardina is the songwriter who gave the world 'Jump'- I salute you sir!
I wanted to disagree with you and say that 1985 was probably more accurate, but then I checked the '84 Billboard 100, and damn, I'd say you hit the nail on the head. There's some major hits on there. Well written comment by the way.
I totally agree with your analysis. I love 80's music but 1984 was the magical year that blasted pop music into the echelons of greatness. That's when the music mixed in with the amazing synthesizers really started blending the lyrics with the beats perfectly. I loved the synthesizers in this song, plus Van Halen's "Jump" in addition to People are People by Depeche Mode another amazing mix of electronic mastery. Even Madonna's Material girl. The beginning was phenomenal. That alien like sound mixed in with the amazing drum sequence. I would say 1984 was really really special and probably my favorite year of music of the 1980s. 85-86 were also good but i would say the years of the ballads. I would say for me 1984 and 1987 were the hallmarks of 80's history in amazing pop tunes.
You're totally not getting it MIKE. It's not about one year being "better," but more definitive. 1984 was the point where MTV hit mainstream and expanded greatly. A lot of the pop icons flourished that year, with Michael Jackson on tour with his Victory tour, Madonna becoming a household and scandalous name, Prince hitting it big with "Purple Rain," and ZZ Top's schtick giving them their biggest hit with "Legs." Movie soundtracks and tie-ins had become a regular and profitable thing with "Ghostbusters," "Footloose," "Beverly Hills Cop," and along with the breakdancing craze and colorful characters including Boy George, it was the most pop and "eighties" of '80s years. 1985 was when a lot of what was emerging in 1984 hit a sort of saturation point (veteran musicians having a revived career, along with benefit concerts) and when things would take a turn (Duran Duran and Van Halen breaking up, and MTV ditching its original Veejays).
The greatest dance song ever--it has everything: the opening like a crescendo, a comet coming at you, the vocals, the beat, the synth fills from heaven--it has the power to bridge gaps between generations on the dance floor with no let up, no down time--only It takes two by Rob Base or September by EWF can come close...
Yes my mother had a pointer sister cassette in her firebird back in the 80s and sitting in those awful seats I remember getting caught up in the sounds of these wonderful women as well as Anita baker billy ocean and ambrosia and air. This is the greatest cut these fine ladies ever recorded. The snap, the power, the absolute conviction of their performance. This is what Perfection sounds like. Slowly, very slowly if you listen closely it is there. Not one note is wrong or out of place. Wow! Thank you very much.
Absolute perfection. There is nothing comparable in the present day to these talented, classy ladies. Like so many, I am glad to have been an 80s girl. It was a great decade for music.
I was 6 years old when this came out but remember it clearly. The 80s were special. Just like the 90s. That 20 year spans of 1980-2000 was truly god sent.

The record is so genious, it lives from its sensational analog bass lines and the strong vocals by these self confident ladies, spiced with a nice dancable beat. Love it very much!
This is the first song I ever requested on the radio...I was trembling with excitement when the DJ picked up my call ..and 20 minutes later when the song was played I bursted in infantile joy!
Love this song so much. One of my favorites growing up in the '70s till now. It's sad that 2 of the sisters have already passed away. But they have immortalized themselves through this song....
Gustavo Machado: This song is so uplifting. It would make every man on death row dance around his cell whilst dreaming of being in the company of these spectacular ladies.
They are not underrated, they are one of the greatest Girl groups in history. They did their thing in the 80's, like what the Supremes did in the 60's, as the only Girl Group to challenge the Beatles and Elvis Presley, and held their own. For the Pointer Sisters, it was Van Halen, Journey, Foreigner, despite going all pop from the different variety/genre of music they used to do, and still held their own against the boys!!!

War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.
Think it's kind of silly you're all saying a certain year of the decade is better than the other.
Stop it.
The Pointer Sisters are forever, Period💯❤💯
I met these ladies back in 1984. I had the pleasure of providing protection for them. They were great. June especially was very nice. May she RIP
I know you were enjoying your time with these nice ladies. God bless you.
@@kimberlyhortz6471 indeed. All three were very nice. June captured my heart though. She was just such a lovely soul.
The Pointer Sisters...Beautiful...Unforgettable...
RIP. I used to play my mother's albums as a kid. The Pointer Sisters were definitely a big part of my upbringing.
Yes my mother had a pointer sister cassette in her firebird back in the 80s and sitting in those awful seats I remember getting caught up in the sounds of these wonderful women as well as Anita baker billy ocean and ambrosia and air. My mom is still with us but hearing these songs of a long forgotten time makes me a bit emotional and nostalgic

This pointer sisters song jump reminds me of fun times growing up in the 80s
What an amazing voice did these sisters have.
The 80s era and music is timeless! Are you jumping to this song right now cause I am.
I Remember seeing Hugh grant dance to this song in love actually.
Sometimes you have to dance and be happy to get the day going.
My go to morning song
single shot of them being in the same spot yet their energy + emotion makes it feel so dynamic and fresh. love them
This is the greatest cut these fine ladies ever recorded. The snap, the power, the absolute conviction of their performance. This is what Perfection sounds like. Slowly, very slowly if you listen closely it is there. Not one note is wrong or out of place. Wow! Thank you very much.
Pointer Sisters are unforgettable. 3 beautiful power houses. Yes I'm 75 & still rocking out. So let's go kick some ass! It's good for soul!
Well observed 👍
That's the final cut. It takes practice and rehearsal
the music world will never be the same without their voices.
The sound of the Pointer Sisters harmony is practically nonexistent today.
Absolute perfection. There is nothing comparable in the present day to these talented, classy ladies. Like so many, I am glad to have been an 80s girl. It was a great decade for music.
80' s are f*cking legendary !!!!!
Yes I would listen to this on youtube back in the 80s
True words my friend, no music like on the 80s!! best decade ever
But there is like Miley, Billie, Adele.....🤮🤮🤮
I was 6 years old when this came out but remember it clearly. The 80s were special. Just like the 90s. That 20 year spans of 1980-2000 was truly god sent.

This type of music speaks for itself. The beat, words and energy. It's amazing, you can remember songs from the first few notes.

It’s funny how that works
imo at least two of sister sledge were better lookers but overall PS had better records. both good though

Hahahahaha..... did you say ladies??
The record is so genious, it lives from its sensational analog bass lines and the strong vocals by these self confident ladies, spiced with a nice dancable beat. Love it very much!
There's simply nothing today that can compare to
that era musically or esthetically..it was simply the best and full of wonderful, beautiful memories ❤

This song never gets old...and gets me UP!!!
Never get tired of listening and watching the pointer sisters RIP BONNIE 🙏
Love this song so much. One of my favorites growing up in the '70s till now. It's sad that 2 of the sisters have already passed away. But they have immortalized themselves through this song....
This song and many others. They were great performers with a strong catalog
The Pointer Sisters are so underrated, isn't even funny, they should have been more famous, lots of great songs.
shamanbear Back in the 80’s they weren’t underrate but they aren’t mentioned much since the 90’s.
Gustavo Machado this is one of my favorite songs ever - and I'm from the forties!
Gustavo Machado: This song is so uplifting. It would make every man on death row dance around his cell whilst dreaming of being in the company of these spectacular ladies.
Hell naw they ain't underrated. Look at all the movie soundtracks...
We will all be listening to this music forever. It's timeless and truthful.
June’s vocals on this track are insane !!!!
Her looks are just as good .. When she pouts at the camera, my feet go to jelly ! .. Wayne

Sad that we lost 3 of these amazing ladies. The Pointer Sisters are one of the greatest female R&B/pop groups that ever was!
RIP Anita 🙏
I'm sadden to hear that Anita past away last night, while people are celebrating wainting for the new year there are people mourning their loved ones, 12/31/22 we lost Barbara Walters, Pope Benedict & Anita Pointer
