  • My postman delivered two ukuleles each costing about $50. My experience with these brands tells me both ukuleles will likely be good ones, but which one will be the best buy? What will they sound like? Can I really expect to purchase a decent tenor ukulele for $50?
The Caramel tenor is still listed for $49.99 and the concert size is $5.00 cheaper. The Horse tenor is not available, but you can get the soprano, concert and baritone sizes. I like the looks of the body of the Caramel ukulele, and I like the sound. I like the complete Horse package, including ukulele and gig bag. This would be a cool gift!

Just FYI: I have seen a couple of ukulele reviewers on UA-cam use a
tiny camera devise to place inside of the soundhole of
a UKULELE to inspect the inside of
the ukulele to see how well it is put together. If there is any messy glue, etc.

Phyllis - Chris at Ukestuff is famous for that!

That's a clever trick but I'd only find it useful if I wanted to look for damage causing a string buzz or something like that. I admit, it makes the video reviewer look good and it's interesting to watch. I'm all teched out, though.😊😊

Great comparison! Can you measure the nut width on both of these? Thank you.

Nuts are regular width, not wide. I don't own either of these ukuleles anymore.

I wouldn't expect either of these ukuleles to be wide nut ukes. Concert Journey comes with a wide nut, as I recall. I have sold both of these ukuleles. Rich

Rich, sorry, is a regular width a 1 3/8” and a wide is 1 1/2”? Those are the two main numbers I see for tenors. Thank you for your time.

I checked some of my ukuleles. Almost all have a nut 1 3/8" Journey mahogany concert has a nut 1 1/2" It looks to me like Hola! deluxe concert has a nut mid-way between those two. This is a very useful question and something I should look into further. So, 1 1/2" would be a wide nut and 1 3/8" will be what you can expect to find on most. I measured a couple of my tenor ukes and they were 1 3/8" and I measured two of my baritones and they were 1 1/2".

Great, thanks! Looking around the Donner DUT-1 is one of the cheapest with a 1.5" nut. A lot of more expensive options have the same. However a " wide nut" is likely more in the range of Oscar Schmidt OU6W with a 1.75" nut (yes, 4 strings!). Hope this helps. This doesn't help me to figure out if the $55 Caramel MT43 has a 1.5".. it may!

The Caramel didn't even come in the usual foam cover that most do? Or had you removed it previously?
