Hi Jeff. My husband and I currently live in Sulligent Alabama, about 200 miles northwest of Birmingham. We visited Dauphin Island with my brother and his wife ( my best freind) back in 2015. Boy was it wonderful. I fell in-love with the island, the atmosphere, and how peaceful it was. So, to my point of this comment; in 2020 I visited my daughter who lives on Whidbey Island, Washington. The gentleman next to me on the airplane was the actual engineer and builder of the Dauphin Island bridge ( Gordon Persons Bridge). He travels all around the world engineering large bridges. Needless to say, it was truly fascinating to talk a gentleman with his experience. Thank you for sharing this fun trip back to one of my favorite places.
I've vacationed in Dauphin Island with friends and family three times in the past 5 years. Easily one of our favorite vacation spots and we hope to live there at least part time in the future. Can't wait to go back!
When my wife and I were visiting New Orleans in the summer of 2021, we had a car for two days and we wanted to go somewhere. We decided to go to Mobile because of the USS Alabama (and because I had heard of Mobile from Ken Burns' The War documentary). We visited the USS Alabama, and after that my wife wanted to go to the beach, so we went down to Dauphin Island. Really pretty drive down there from Mobile.

As a 30 year old Midwestern do you have any input or things to share about the city? Thinking we may make a trip for a week to scope things out for ourselves. My only worry is will it be a culture shock moving out of Iowa, the only state I've lived in.
Beautiful! I was looking at places on Dauphin Island a couple of years back....Sadly, my Company would not allow remote working (for me, at least) then. I would love to be able to wake up to that sunrise over the Gulf. All the best from the UK.
I went to Dauphin Island for the first time in May of 2021, it was a beautiful place. My first time seeing the Gulf Coast, and my first time open water swimming in the ocean. My wife and I have been looking at a few places around the country that interest us. This flat island is quickly being driven to the bottom of the ocean. The "front row" of beach houses are actually the third line of houses... the first two are under water.
There's a study done by Dr Mimi Fearn through the University of South Alabama. It explains why the island is constantly changing. It's not exclusively because of the construction of houses. There are no houses that have gone underwater, east or west ends, that I know of and I've lived here for 45. years. I despise new homes being built on top of each other down here. DI has become very commercialized and with the Aloe Bay project underway I see no reversal from this retail sinkhole.
@Clay Pylant the last two houses on the left at the West end, they are directly on top of water and at times over the water.
