Mobile is the original New Orleans. It was the capital of Louisiana first when it was still a French territory, then it was moved to Biloxi, and finally moved to NOLA. Hence all the French influence down I-10, but Mobile is the oldest of the three French towns
@Bob I feel like Mobile could be up there in population if it urbanized it's housing and made more jobs for younger adults to move in. Kind of like Austin, Texas. Also it's a port city so there's no reason why they shouldn't have expanded it already, and it's important to invest into tourism like New Orleans. Good for local businesses when more people buy goods, and the port would bring goods in for those businesses.
So far what's going on in Mobile is their regional airport, which is 20 15-20 miles from downtown is moving near the shipyard, which is 5 miles from downtown. A new high rise bridge will be build next yr, which will bypass the tunnels.
I agree, it does look a bit like New Orleans due to the Spanish iron works and balconies on the buildings. Mobile had the first Mardi Gras in the US as well, and I saw so many great bands at Municipal Auditorium. When I lived there (a loooong time ago) I remember their Mardi Gras as very different than N.O. Less crazy, more families w/ kids in the streets. A LOT safer too. Unfortunately, both cities have a lot of crime these days, which is why I decided not to move back to Mobile. New Orleans would be out of the question! I was there about 6 years ago and it felt very unsafe even in the daytime. When I lived there from the 70's thru the 80's it was dangerous, but nothing like it is now. Shootings on Bourbon St in the daytime? That never happened before.
We are not really sure as we did not spend a lot of time there. I recommend a website called numbeo which helps you compare cost of living between cities.
I have lived here my whole life. It’s boring. I like boring. I am not the type that goes to bars and such. My youngest son left. He’s 24. He moved to Texas. He said there is a lot to see and do. He will never move back here. 😢 Pronounced- Mo-beel.
Mobile is mini New Orleans and you can’t change my mind!
