A key that opens many locks is a master key. A lock that is opened by many keys... And that's why they call it "Master Lock".

  • @gavinjenkins899

The secret to making this lock last longer appears to be leaving the key in it, so that the assailant has to remove the key first before picking it, doubling the attack time based on these datapoints.

    • @thymark

To tripple the time, the key should be the wrong key. That way they try 2 or 3 times before picking.

I’ve picked (decoded) many combination locks. I’ve never picked a key lock, however, I have used common bypass/defeat methods on them.
Hell, I defeated the lock on the back door of a new house I was buying during the sign-off walk-thru after the builder’s rep bragged about how they (mis-)installed the strike plates for the locks. Had him lock me out and let him watch through the glass as I pulled a plastic insurance ID card from my wallet and opened the door in under 20 seconds. Of course, I made them fix it before I signed-off and closed on the purchase.
I’ll bet that every house in that neighborhood built/sold before I bought mine still has exterior door strike plates installed improperly. Of course, every house in the neighborhood has a builder installed alarm system, so I don’t recommend trying to figure out where and break-in, chances are you’ll set off an alarm.

I have a "challenge" for you; but first, a concise backstory.
When I was a teen, I got locked out of our apartment coming home from school. Instead of waiting for my mom to get home -- and a bit inspired by video games -- I opted to try and pick the deadbolt on our door. I was able to track down two small nails in the hallway, and used those nails to *successfully* pick the lock using very basic knowledge. It was a very awesome moment for me... and a frightening one to think our lock was that easy to pick.
So, my challenge: how quickly can you pick a deadbolt with two nails?
I know it won't be difficult for you, but I feel like you'd have interesting insights as you did it.
If nothing else, I just wanted to share my little story in a place where people might appreciate it. :D

    @paclockpres.9805 3 роки тому +46

Speaking from a padlock manufacturing perspective, I think this vulnerability was likely "solved" back in the day because of the inability of the times to produce such thin combs. But that's just my guess as my relationship with padlock manufacturing started just over 15 years ago.
Not sure if Master has seen this yet or not, but PACLOCK pays attention... that's for sure. Short answer to the "is this is a problem for PACLOCK?" is "mostly no, it is not a problem." Not trying to be a politician here, really just trying to be 100% with you all. We haven't done the math, but around 85% of our cylinders across the board are NOT susceptible to this sort of attack.
And it's not really fair to blame the cylinder, although it is obviously the vehicle of the problem. It's more related to bitting for PACLOCK. The critical difference between a PACLOCK cylinder and everyone else out there in our product class is that we introduced a "bump resistance pin" back in 2009. Take a PACLOCK core apart and you'll see 5 driver pins with security features and then one "standard" pin way at the back. "Standard" is what everyone calls it because they just assume it's standard.
It's not. Back in '08 we were trying to improve our pick and mainly our bump resistance. Our tests showed that the bumping technique depends heavily on mass (weight) in order for a shear line to be created during the bumping. So we added security driver pins, varied with styles, in the first five chambers. But the last chamber we left that pin completely solid AND we made it larger than all the other driver pins. Extra mass! So the other 5 pins have much less mass because they are shorter and they also have material removed as a part of the security features in the pin. Definitely not a "standard" driver pin like most everyone points out!
Because of this technique, we have darn good bump resistance.
Guess what, we're also getting some very nice over lift resistance as well because of it. Plus, our cylinders are designed slightly different than Master's so that as long as you have some larger pins somewhere in your bitting lineup, then you're protected against the over lift. Really, two conditions have to be met in order for a PACLOCK to be over lifted. Our quick math, looking at our bittings, says we're around 85% effective against this sort of attack.
But we will be 100%. In 24 hours we already re-designed, built, and tested a revised version of our bump pin that will take care of us. Once we get some production-class samples ready, might send some on over to LPL that have the vulnerability (in our current form) and then use that same bitting in the newly modified cylinder to show it's been fixed.
I'm sure Master will just as quick to hop on this since it looks like 100% of their products are susceptible to this very easy attack. Well done LPL!

You will find that typically there are about 10 patterns of actual "key" with a Master Lock that are nearly identical. Sometimes exactly identical.(check the key patterns next time you are in the hardware store to see how many have the same key - then start laughing) Once you have a large enough set of keys, you can just wiggle and rake them to get an open.

This implies masterlock cares enough to recall.

Yep, recalls like that tend to happen only after a company gets forced into it via lawsuit
