You really have to admire Lovecraft's range of description. He'll wax poetic about a staircase being tenebrous or the gibbous moon glistening in the eternal night, but then when he wants to make a direct point about how terrifying it is to look upon Cthulhu's whole figure - ''Briden looked back...and went mad''. Short, but very effective.

He's the absolute master of literary tone. That is a great observation. His pacing is so great. His tone and pacing is his genius.
