Spinning Ugly Fibre into Pretty Yarn? Electric Eel Wheel 6 Test Spin

  • Attractive yarn is every spinner's goal. So what do you do when your fibre just doesn't appeal to you?
I recently purchased the Electric Eel Wheel by Dreaming Robots , and thought I would do a test spin to see how I liked it. I chose a fibre from my stash that I wouldn't be heartbroken to lose (if I messed up): 4 oz of 80/20 Merino Silk dyed by Into the Whirled for their 2013 Fibre Club. I am...not thrilled with the colours. Bright cyan and olive green is NOT my jam.
So I did the only thing you really CAN do when you have ugly fibre...challenge myself to make nice looking yarn with it!
Honesty, I'm sure these colours speak to someone out there - just not me. And that's OK. I had a fabulous time trying out my EEW 6, and I look forward to my next spinning adventure!

It's a good sturdy 3-ply with plenty of length, so I can see it being made into anything from socks and/or mitts to a shawl, depending on the person it goes to.. 🤔

Hello. First time on your channel. I will order my own Eel Wheel soon. Two spinner friends have inspired me to give it a try so I'm pursuing gathering tools and knowledge for that inevitable moment. I happen to like Olive green, and it looks beautiful paired with the blues, so I think the yarn turned out beautifully. Two friends who also love olive green I feel certain they would agree. I'm sure, I too, will occasionally make yarn that I feel is less attractive simply due to the color or color combination. If everything goes as planned and I learn well enough, that color for me would be pink. I'm definitely not a fan of anything pink, which includes the worst of them, that pinky peach salmon shade. I hope I also have such a great result when I eventually run into some fiber that is not my jam either.

I found it fascinating watching you spin on the espinner. I've got a home made one that hubby found in a thrift store but I've not used it yet (too chicken I think). I do have a beautiful wheel (a Louet Victoria) and a couple of spindles (my favourite is the Golding Cherry ring-spindle) but I'm an indifferent spinner as yet. I haven't done any spinning in ages. Partly because I got some stunning fibre and when I had spun it, it was all muddy and not nice at all and I was really disappointed.

    • @MaireColclough
      @MaireColclough  2 роки тому

Sometimes a yarn will spin up that way...I like to see how others spin a specific fibre. If you're ok with using Ravelry, there are a bunch of groups to browse. Otherwise, instagram is your friend.
As for the diy e-spinner...check for breaks in any electrical cables before plugging in. Also, unplug asap if you smell ANYTHING weird (burning, ozone, etc). Otherwise...give it a try! You may just find its a valuable new tool 😃

I am equal parts intrigued and intimidated by spinning. Back when I first learned to knit, I cobbled together a DIY drop spindle from popsicle sticks and dowels, and used it to spin (please don't judge me) cotton balls. What you've got going on here is light-years ahead of my meager experiments, but it kinda makes me want to try nonetheless.
I *really* wanted your skein to turn out blue-and-gold instead of... greenish. Up close, when you can see the separate colors, it's still kind of pretty! It's just when you back up a couple of steps and they blend together that it becomes a bit sad, subjectively. Definitely looking forward to more spinning content, when you find other colors to try!

Less olive. More blue/yellow. It's pretty good for what it is, so I'll take it as a win 😁

its not a colour I would enjoy, its a little on the light side, I favour more jewel tones and blackened colours with hints and screaming streaks of neons. but its a nice looking yarn. 10/10 would smoosh for texture.

    have you thought of over-dyeing?

No...it's more fun to see what I can do with what's already there rather than risk making the situation worse 😁

Another not-a-fan-of-the-colorway here. I can see why/how it got it's name. Qarth in Google images is all sandstone and sky. Why not overdye? Or, as you said, leave as is and gift. There's always that. Hugs

I believe Into the Whirled used a still from Game of Thrones for inspiration, so that tracks. But yes...I think it will probably make a good gift 😁

Baby puke on the Mediterranean 🤣 I missed the snark. Idk what is up with UA-cam. I seem to not be getting notifications to when people upload. So annoying.

@@MaireColclough i've been ghosting most social media for a while, while I finished a project I was working on. But I didn't even got notification that Rachel Maksy had uploaded. And my duaghter never misses a video from Rachel. So lately i've been late for the party on everyone's videos.
