Works for ice fishing too. Don't worry about coming home in the dark. Many times the bite picks up just in that last half hour. I was fishing perch the other day and everybody around me packed up and left. I wanted to, but I stuck around another half hour. Got a bite on my jig pole that turned out to be about a 4 lb northern. Just got a good look at him as I got him up to the hole and he dove down and cut my line. Oh, well. But I never would have had that fight if I'd quit too early.

Very good advice! I’ve been doing that for years and more like 2 hours and it’s amazing how many birds show up 3-4 hours after leaving the roost and you see them out of the corner of your eye strutting near you. Be patient and sit still and if you get enough experience, sometimes you hear one gobble and you just know that bird is coming. Gun up and don’t move. I’ve had many birds show up within 15 feet from my side or back. This guy speaks the truth. Pay attention if you’re new to hunting turkeys!

Lived in my house for 31 years and I see turkeys here and there but I had 24 hens, 2 Tom's in my yard the other day for the first time I know of, and I got to watch them for over an hour and I'm telling you they are in no hurry at all when everything is good. Took the Tom's 15 minutes to get up with the hens cause they couldn't stop strutting..no gobbling..just chillin with the ladies.

Absolutely true. I guess divulging the well kept secret was bound to happen. I learned this years ago when a gobbler hung up about 9:AM and shut up about 9:30. I headed out for the 20 minutes trek to the truck at 10 only to hear him sound off several times from the spot I left.

Mid morning the hens normally leave the gobblers, at least here in eastern Virginia they do. By the time the season opens here the boys are henned up off the roost and hens are already starting to nest. After the lady’s leave the gobbler often times he will come back to the spot he heard that “lonesome hen” this morning on the roost. Last two Turkeys I killed were at 1050 and 1145. They were henned up after fly down and came back looking for me. Dale is spot on. They both came in without gobbling. I never moved from initial set up spot. I have done this quite a bit through the years with success.

I agree, but unfortunately these days, we have to work so much to afford the land & equipment to be able to hunt, we don't have much of the luxury of being on "turkey time" 😄 (I liked that reference) as he put it. Nonetheless, I know, the turkey, deer, etc don't care about our problems, they do as they do. I haven't got a turkey yet, (am new to the hunting of them this year) but it's still pretty cool to hear & see they are on my land at times & that if I do get some time I may have an opportunity to get one. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that I don't normally get the time to sit for as long as I understand it could take, even though I wish I could. Please enjoy & appreciate the fact that you can. Take care, be well, & happy hunting!

      Charles DeRamus
Great advice. Late in the 2020 season I set up on a turkey that had been hunted hard all season. His first gobble was around 5:30. He and I had a short conversation before two hens went to him. Being late in the season, I thought they might leave him by around 10:00, so didn't call again until 10:00. He gobbled back west of me. We had another short conversation before he quit responding. I went silent. I didn't call again until 12:00 noon. He gobbled back south of me, only about 75 yards away but wouldn't come closer. I went silent again and decided to wait until 1:00 to call again. At 1:00 I called again but got no response. I decided to give him 30 more minutes. I was still where I originally set up to call. As I was gathering up my calls to leave the thought entered my mind that he might be close, but I convinced myself that was just wishful thinking. After standing up to leave he flushed, no more than 40 yards away.
I stayed with that turkey about 8 hours which is the longest I have ever stayed with one. I jokingly tell people I lacked only 15 seconds of patience necessary to kill this turkey. This is an extreme example; however, I agree 100% with Dale and having patience has helped me kill more turkeys.

I killed one one time that had busted me the day before and my buddy that same week. I set up next morning and didn't call at all. He gobbled at daylight once and two hours later he gobbled once 50 yards away. I took all the information I had and set up where I thought he might go and I was right, never made a call. Actually my first tom I stalked playing cat and mouse until I shot him in the face I didn't call that one. Then there's all the busted hunts..
