Battletech Painting The Kell Hounds | Black Templar & Blood Angel Red Contrast
Вставка

- Here I demonstrate how to paint Morgan Kell's Archer and the red and black scheme of the Kell Hounds mercenary unit. Although I use contrast paints for the main colors, they're not required to achieve a good result. This painting process will also work well for helping to paint other units that use a red and black base color schem such as the Skye Rangers/Skye Guard, Red Lancers, Tikonov Republican Guards, and The Red Hunters Special Operations Group to name a few.
Visit our website www.camospecs.com for thousands examples of painted mechs and combat vehicles in their official regimental paint schemes.

Really sweet looking lance. Well done.
Thank you for this; I'm planning to paint up a Skye Rangers lance with a very similar color scheme, and this is an incredible reference
You're very welcome. I try to create content that is adaptable to more than one type of scheme whenever possible so this is great to hear! Thanks!
Just finished my first mini based on your easy camo for the WVR-6R, thanks for all the videos
No problem 👍
Nice. Never tried drybrushing a light grey over red. Looks really nice. You keep knocking it out of the park with these contrast videos, and are the only reason I own any of that paint line myself. I've painted well over a company worth of pirates messing around with the contrast paints. Thanks man!
Thanks for the kind words and glad to hear you're making progress with painting. Keep it up!
Great video. I've been a fan of Kell Hounds since playing Invasion 3042 back in the day.
This was a very helpful tutorial and I learned more about how to use the Contrast Paints in this video than I have anywhere else. Thanks for sharing this.
Great to hear, they can really be helpful to getting a lot of minis painted.
Whoa contrast paints are actually kinda cool
They have some nice uses, but they're not a magic solution to everything.
Great video as always!
I appreciate that, thanks!
Looks gorgeous!
Thank you!!
Damn this looks really cool
Excellent videos, If speed is essential I use a hairdryer between color changes ...carefully of course!
Thank‘s!
Very helpful ! Thanks !
Glad it was helpful!
nice
Fantastic work. Going to try this out. However, the few times I've used contrast paints, they seem to rub off easily when dry, eg. with holding, or even drybrushing gently. Did you seal the contrasts with varnish before drybrushing?
Your experience isn't uncommon and you're correct that a coat of varnish will prevent that issue and allow you to drybrush or continue to paint over the contrast/speedpaints.
very nice video
Thanks!
Before the dry brushing or washes, do you apply a gloss, semi, or flat clear coat/varnish on the entire miniature first?
If you tend to be rough with your drybrushing technique then it wouldn't hurt to put a bit of flat or semi flat varnish over the thinner speed and contrast style paints but it's not a hard and fast method for me. Sometimes I'll spray some varnish with my airbrush to protect speedpaints if I'm doing other wash or wet type of painting next to or near them just to prevent issues.
👍👏👏👏✌
Fantastic results! I've seen black contrast paint over gray, and it seems like it shows less variance than the white undercoat. Your black on white, however, looks great. Does the speed of application make the difference, or are you perhaps applying the black thicker than other painters?
Thanks for the compliments. The Black Templar wasn't applied over a true white. The Bright Warm Grey I used is more off white or light grey which helps to minimize the harsh light and dark variations after the contrast paint dries. I don't really apply it thick, but I also don't keep going back over it again like I would perhaps with a regular acrylic color. Once you have the surface covered with the contrast paint and there's little or no pooling, let it be. Contrast paint doesn't like to be moved around at all as it's drying even though it may still look wet.
@@CamoSpecsOnline Thanks!
Great vid and instruction.
But I think it was a missed opportunity to not drill out the missile holes. My opinion of course.
Thanks. I don't disagree that model prep is important but many folks don't have the required small drill bits nor the patience to go to that length of prep for a tabletop quality paintjob. Most of these paintjob focused tutorials skip the model prep to avoid repetition. I have a video on using drill bits to fix metal gun barrels and missile tubes from a few years back. I'm also planning on showing how to trim and drill out the Catapult LRMs at some point as well.
Fantastic video, I've been missing your content. Are all primers universal? Due to the sign of the times most of my hobby shops closed down and the paint and primer are becoming increasingly harder to find? Are automotive primers just as good as the WG/ generic hobby primers? Thanks.
Thanks, the content slow down was inevitable as the pandemic recovery began and we went back to work. One video per month is the current goal to sustain but with more artists joining we'll increase if at all able. Primers are NOT all created equal. Of possible use a miniature or model hobby grade primer if possible. The pigment size and properties are different than standard spray paint primers. That being said, it is still perfectly possible to achieve a great prime coat with basic primer spray cans.
@@CamoSpecsOnline Thanks, yeah it will be an experiment to say the least.
@@christophermavromatis7724 I've had good luck with Krylon Fusion Gloss if that's available to you. The White Contrast tutorial video shows that primer.
I didnt quite understood the part with why i want to prime in white and afterwards apply grey, why not prime in grey in first place and then apply red and black?
As I explained in the video, the reason for the use of an acrylic base coat over the primer is for fixing mistakes and touch ups between application of the two different colors of contrast paint. You certainly don't have to do it, if you don't want to.
Any chance for a tutorial how to paint Taurian Concordat?
Which unit would you see as most useful for getting a tutorial?
Game Color Gris Muralla 72.049 - no longer available. What color is better to replace?
I found several retailers in the US with it in stock and Vallejo's website still has it listed. That being said, any light grey from another paint manufacturer that is of a similar shade will work just fine.
@@CamoSpecsOnline Many thanks. There is no such choice in Russia as in the USA and Europe.
What is that stand you are using on the bottom of your mini?
It's an old Citadel paint pot that were known for having lids that were impossible to remove once the paint got dried in the threads. I suggest a more purpose designed mini holder, the GW one is a very good one that many folks find helpful.
Why don’t you thin your paint? I’m not arguing with your results but I’ve never seen someone not thin their paint lol
I don't usually thin contrast paint, but then again thinning paint is a means to a desired result. A single video of you not seeing me thin paint doesn't mean I don't do it. Perhaps watch a few more videos ;). Some paints need a great deal of thinning, some not so much or none at all in the case of some airbrush ready paints.
@@CamoSpecsOnline Sorry I didn’t mean to offend you but I have seen multiple videos where you didn’t thin paint… it’s not a big deal I was only asking out of curiosity. You are a way better painter than me so I thought I was lied to by being told I always had to thin my paint.
I'm not offended at all and spoiler alert, a lot of my paints are thinned in the bottle so if I didn't ever mention that in any of my videos, that's part of the reason you may not see me thin it. I add flow improver or water to a lot of things but again I tend to thin contrast paint only when necessary and with the mix medium when I do.

Why is it called gunmetal when it's silver/steel colored? Gun metal should be BLACK OR DARK IN color not SILVER or STEEL. firearms are BLACK or Blue in color if there not nickel or chrome plated.
