- It may be time to say goodbye to the Golden State, yet it should behoove this great tour to examine one last critically impactful city in California's colorful history. As this state's famous Gold Rush drew tens of thousands to the hills of the Sierra Nevada, for some this meant a fantastic opportunity to profit from more commercial ventures; a waterfront port was built along the Sacramento River to oversee the area's frenzied economic traffic and pinch out profit. The new outpost settlement boomed and flourished in concert with the consistent arrivals to California Gold Country. Shouldering some heavy setbacks such as floods, fires and epidemics during its early years, the hardy frontier folk managed to overcome much adversity and elongated the city's prosperity with transportation and agricultural industries. Ultimately, the development of this city played a substantial role in displacing formerly deep-rooted Mexican, Spanish or Native influences in favor of an "americanized" California we know of in modern times, having preserved many of its earliest districts and buildings. Today the urban area stands as one of the United States' most populated capital cities, continuing the lasting historical trend of facilitating interaction between many subregions of Northern California. Having produced an identity that extends to administration, education and counterculture, this urban area is way more than a holdover of a bygone era. Let's enjoy a day with one foot in the past and another foot in the future.
