I was stationed in Germany in the 1970s, and *loved* the incredible Christmas traditions there, of which this was one. I doubled this recipe, and the yield was exactly 24 formed on 70mm backoblaten. I made the gingerbread powder, and I used my own candied fruit peel. This Elisenlebkuchen is incredible. There is *nothing* like this in the US, unless somebody brought it over! Also, this is *very* expensive to make, in late November of 2022...about 60USD for 24...with the price of the nuts just crazy! But in the end, there is nothing like it! It is delicious and easy to replicate an important German tradition! Danke!
@@HissingKitty2008 That's a smart idea. Don't have a costco membership, too far away, my father swears by costco. I'd be surprised if hazelnut is much cheaper than $14.00 a pound, but I suppose it could be.
I made these, your Marzipan, Stollen, Pfeffernouse, and my mother's Springerle recipe last ear, and my family loved all of it. My dad, especially as he loved living in Germany when he was in the Army, which is where they started a lot of our Christmas tradition.
I spent from the age of 2 years old to about 13 ( so basically I grew up there) in Nuremberg and then my husband was stationed in Schweinfurt. It was his first time and we had arrived in December which was perfect, so the very first thing I did was take him down to the Marktplatz and started looking for the lebkuchen. He however wanted something warm and so he bought a little cobalt mug of glühwein. At the time my boys were still in a stroller so i took full advantage of their youth and visited the gummi shop often and of course had to visit the bakery and meat market to make sure everyone experienced a little of everything . My personal absolute favorite dish is Rouladen and Kartoffelkloesse ( potato dumplings). I miss the fresh smell you are hit with when you go to the marktplatz and the one site I used to order import from is no longer, so this channel is a game changer.
These are my absolute favorite! My husband was in Germany in December 2018 and was taken to the Christmas Market. He purchased a pack of cookies and brought them home for our children and me. I have not been able to find them at the local German bakeries. So I finally was able to get all the ingredients to make them myself. They are absolutely delicious! Thank you for sharing the recipe!
Our oma made us gingerbread men (persons?) when we were young. They were wondeful, and decorating them was lots of fun. But when we became teenagers, some of our gingerbread men decorations became very crazy. God bless our oma. The things she put up with from her silly grandchildren.
I am so happy I found your channel. I am originally from Germany and have lived in Texas for the past 34 years. I love making some of the traditional German Treats for Christmas for family and friends. Frohe Weihnachen !
I have watched quite a few of your videos and all your recipes look so fabulous!! This recipe is a must try for me for sure!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful tradition!
I'm glad to find your recipe with instructions. I bought the Backoblaten at Spec's to make Lebkuchen, but I've never done it. I just love them. I worked with several German exchange teachers who had brought us lebkuchen years ago. Excited to try to make it.
I have enjoyed these as store bought cookies for years, but I am so glad to discover your recipe and channel. This will become one of my standard cookies to make for the winter holidays. Danke dir!!! 💙🤎🤍
Barbara, I use your recipe for these cookies every year! They are my all-time favorites, the best Christmas cookie I've ever had. I just wanted to come back to this video and say thank you so much for sharing. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year. 😊
We love Lebkuchen, but usually have to rely on ones that we bring back from Germany (or get in a care package from my wife's family). No Aldi here in Hawaii. We made these today and they were wonderful!
There is also a video of someone making Oblaten at home. She got the recipe from an old German cookbook. It and this are on my baking bucket list this winter along with springerle.
@@MyGermanRecipes it’s Gooseberry farms. I searched oblates recipe. The only thing I recommended Was that she use parchment paper so she didn’t have to lift them into a cookie tray because they are so thin.
