    A really interesting development by Kase, and I can see the value and efficiency in adopting it. However, I'm more than happy with the existing K9 holder system, and am finding it difficult to rationalise spending £260 UK on a magnetic holder. Additionally, the "traditional" K9 is actually cheaper and quite significantly so. If the K100 comes down in price then I may be more tempted, but for now I'll concentrate on spending my pennies on replacing my existing filters with Kase Wolverine equivalents. Nice video Adam - really clear explanations and demonstrations. Stay safe out there sir.

    It's great that there are so many new filter system options available now, compared to the past. However, I am concerned that this is becoming more like a case of 'how many permutations can we make of filter systems' by manufacturers and charging hundred of pounds (or dollars) for each filter, let alone the system. It may be good for newbies to photographers, but for more advanced photographers who already are using a system, it seems like every few months new products come on stream that puts pressure on them to change. I will wait till this new industry settles down before committing my hard earned cash into yet another profit stream for the manufacturers. Sorry Kase, you need to wait much longer for me to buy into these two systems.

      Mmmm, kinda been thinking the same sort of thing as you on this and have seen quite a few UA-cam videos of different landscape photographers demonstrating KASE magnetic filters yet I’m far from convinced. A while ago I got interested in the Manfrotto Xume magnetic filter adapter system, which was far too expensive really for what it was but it seems to be discontinued or at least you can’t get both the lens adapter and the filter adapter in 77mm or 82mm anymore wherever you look (just the half for the lens - I think). That made me look around for a 3rd party copy and I have some cheap eBay copies of the Xume (think they were called UURig or something like that) and they were under £10 for a complete set to enable you to adapt one lens and one screw in filter to become quickly attached/detached, which is especially good for ND’s for video shooting. However I really wanted a lens hood system to go with this and found that Lee had done a newer version of the Lee 100 complete with bellows style lens hood which are very expensive and some of the “new improved” parts seem cheap feeling plastic! After hunting around I ended up buying second hand version of the original Lee 100 with 105mm CP, tandem adapters and the wide angle bellows hood for huge amounts less than their newer system. So I can use my cheap UURig adapters for my screw in filters for quickly changing ND’s or CP, and then my bargain used/original Lee 100 system with hood, CP and grad ND’s for more complex set ups. Won’t be investing several x£100’s in KASE magnetic filters any time soon I don’t think

    I've loved using Kase's Wolverine magnetic system for a while now (and sold my Lee system since it was just gathering dust). It's so much lighter and more convenient than than a standard filter system. (Their clip in filters, on the other hand, were a complete fail for me.) With lens hoods I find it simpler to forego them and, if necessary to alleviate flare, just use my hand to shield the front element, and/or blending images (one with a thumb over the light source) if the light source is in the image itself. Like you, I now do grad ND filtering in post, since this is non-destructive and gives me far more control (and lightens the load, of course) compared with doing it at capture. Notwithstanding that, Kase also produce a filter holder for their magnetic ND grad that allows significant movement of the graduation point in the image much as with the system you demonstrated. Without this filter holder the graduation starting point is fixed in the middle, which sometimes works but usually it doesn't. Annoyingly, they only sell the filter holder with a kit (their "Magnetic Round Master Set" in Europe), not separately. So if I have a question, it's this: can you bug Kase to sell that separately?

    • @jimowens8105

      I love the term "non-destructive". it is a rhetorical device that implies that if someone is not doing a thing the same as the writer they must be doing it wrong. In some cases the artifacts introduced with blending images is more destructive than using a GND filter.
      To each their own.👍

    • @AmorLucisPhotography
      @AmorLucisPhotography 2 роки тому

      @@jimowens8105 I'm surprised you take that implication, Jim. To be very clear, I was using the term without any such intended implication. I was using it in the sense that changes made by the use of an ND grad at the time of capture can be difficult or sometimes impossible to adjust or walk back later, in the same sense in which overexposing at capture resulting in highlight clipping is "destructive" - it bakes something into the image that constrains what one can then do in post. By contrast, ramping up the exposure slider in post, which may equally blow out highlights, is non-destructive because you can always just pull the slider back down again. On several occasions I have, for example, used a 3-stop medium grad ND and realized later that (say) a 2-stop hard grad ND would have worked better. Sometimes I can undo my choices successfully and other times not.
      I agree about post processing artefacts - sometimes that is a problem. There are swings as well as roundabouts for either method. For myself, I prefer the flexibility and control of doing it in post where I can (almost?) always eliminate any obtrusive artefacting. I can also use luminosity masking and similar techniques to apply ND graduation just to certain elements in the scene and not to others - to the sky, but not to the steeple jutting into the sky - something you can't do at capture with an ND grad filter.
      As you say - each to their own. I was just explaining my choice, not judging those who make a different choice.

    • @Jeff-jg7jh
      @Jeff-jg7jh 2 роки тому

      @@jimowens8105 The real original interpretation of "none destructive" is from Adobe, pertaining to LightRoom. You can work a photo and not lose the original version of the file. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @jimowens8105
      @jimowens8105 2 роки тому

      @@Jeff-jg7jh Yes I think the marketing for LR describes the use of the raw editor as "non-destructive". I use LR and photoshop so I am not arguing that point. However, the OP extends that to cover the entire photographic process, specifically to the use of gnd filters. Why not include cpl or nd... maybe that zoom lens isn't as good as a prime, or the technique of icm? These all lead to irreversible effects on the captured image. Are these "destructive"?
      My point is that the innuendo of claiming a given process is "non-destructive" implies that the other is destructive. We are all creative artists... to each their own .

      Well it was this video that made me invest into the Kase filter system, was just about to go to NISI. Im sorry that Adam didn't get a commission but the New Zealand rep lives 20min from me and we are trying to reduce our carbon foot print so didn't want to ship from the other side of the world. On your Armour system don't stack the CP and ND64 together makes people think they are short of a filter when they first open box as we expect to see them all separated.

Like you, I no longer use grads and I very happy with the simplicity of the circular magnetic filters which seem to be of very good quality. My only slight gripe with these is that on rare occasions I do knock them off and would prefer stronger magnets. 👍👍👍

    Methinks the concept may have been "borrowed" from the Wine Country Camera filter system. They use "vaults" to hold the ND's and can also take a CPL that can be turned by a dial on the holder. Having said that, I've been using Kase Filters for years and actually explored the idea a few years ago of taking on the Australian distributorship. Most of the time I use the magnetic round ND's and CPL, which are compact and able to be attached in seconds. If I do need a grad, I use my Wolverine filters in my Wine Country Camera system.

    The (only) advantage of this Kase 100 Armor Magnetic vs Freewell Magnetic VND is that on the Kase you can apply grad filters as you nicely explained at 15:48 You explained that you don't use grad filters, but they might be useful for videography where you don't have the option to shoot multiple frames with different exposure.
    If you don't use grad filters, the Freewell Magnetic VND ($450) is more versatile because of the variable nature of the filters, which might only be interesting for videography.
    Kase's own Wolverine Magnetic CPL system is great, too, but is not variable.

    As for filters in general, I'm still on the fence, all I have is CPL's & a lot of imagination due to a lack of ND filters!
    I had long thought NISI was on the right path in that they use 100% optical glass on all of their filters & as noted, so does Kase, that is the primary reason I will always avoid Lee filters, I personally refuse to shoot through resin, i.e. plastic...With the 1000's of dollars I have invested in lenses, this should speak for itself...That is simply my opinion & most know what they say about opinions...

    Hi Adam I'm about to get a new camera so been looking at KASE a lot i think I'm more keen on the filters that sit behind the lens on the body . They allow lens hoods to stay on the lenses and no adaptors to carry around . I haven tossed up about getting a square system as my 16-35mm canon lens does get vignette at present . My main concern is having to carry even bigger filters around where as the install ones are tiny but i cant stack my CP and ND together then . a bit of a conundrum on which way to head but def keen on the KASE brand.

When I used that lens with a step up ring, the magnetic adapter, the 82mm polarizer and an additional ND, I had vignetting in the corners. What size of filters are you using? It should be even worse with the GF23?

      I rarely stack filters. The KASE filters that I am using have a CPL and ND filter built into one filter. Kase doesn't advertise them much. I had a look on their website and couldn't find them so you might have to contact them to see if they still make them. Failing that you would be better off purchasing larger filters for the wider lenses. Either the new Wolverine Armour setup or the lens hood step up that uses larger diameter filters so I would imagine stacking would work but you would be best to check first.

    Thank for the review! I saw this on their site this past weekend while looking up the wolverine 10 stop and was wondering on the stacking of filters. I recently bought the Kase Entry Kit after breaking my Breakthrough magnetic holder and nicking up the CPL. I've been very happy so far, much smaller, lighter and it has the ability to stack magnetically. Not sure if I'll switch anytime soon but I like the new innovation. Are you able to stack 2 GNDs or a Square ND and a GND in the holder?

    It seems the cpl can be pushed out from the other side (the glove thing). What happens with the cpl AND the ND on the front? In that scenario, it looks like I can't 'push out' either the cpl or nd. True? Do I need to grow my fingernails and take off my gloves? It would be nice if there were some sort of release lever to pop them out. On another note, what's with the suds? Fertilizer or some pollution upstream? Is it naturally occurring? I've never seen that much without some 'help' from humans.

    Is it true that, as Kase is a German company, it should actually be pronounced "KAH-zay"? Now there's a burning question. 😆 I'm actually very happy with my NiSi filters, except that thanks to Adobe's recent sky select masks for LR and ACR, I may never use my ND grad filter again. I'm stunned at how well it works, even with trees along the skyline.

    I have the Magnetic 82mm Kase system. It's a good idea but has a main flaw. When I have the magnetic ring on (I bought rings for most my lenses), I can't use my caps.
    I think they wanted us to buy their caps. But their caps suck big time as the magnet is VERY weak and they keep falling.
    I wouldn't recommend and won't invest in it anymore for this reason.

    • @robertparsons558
      @robertparsons558 2 роки тому

      I find the 82mm caps I have attach themselves very firmly to the filter adapter rings and lens hood ring. Sometimes it's difficult to pull them off. In addition the rings have a raised outer edge into which the back of the cap sits preventing sideways pressure from dislodging them.
      The caps will attach to the front of the filters but not nearly so strongly and can be easily dislodged by sideways pressure.

    Hey Adam - great insightful video as always. I'm intrigued by the Kase Armour system. I've been a long time user of the Lee Filter system, but I'm now finding that I am using grad filters less and less due to the great dynamic range of my Sony camera and the ability to correct in post. I'm assuming the Kase system using the 100x150 frame can take the Lee Filters? The appeal of a magnetic system is getting stronger by the day.

    Perfect timing! I'm just about to buy some Wolverine filters and not having a hood for use when it's raining was something I was concerned about, so finding out about the new adapters and hood is great! Is it just the same magnetic caps that go on the new adapters?

    In another video someone (maybe it was You) explained that for long exposure stills photography, filters are not required any more: just make a series of photos from a tripod, combine these photos in photoshop or whatever. That technique would give you even a lot more flexibility on post. This is not applicable in video of course. You mentioned in the video that you don't use grad filters. Why do you use filters at all?
