Thumb Piano

  • Thumb pianos are what I made all the kids for Christmas this year. I had fun making them, but tuning them was altogether another matter. The tines were made by cutting up an electrician fish tape, heating up the ends with a propane torch and flattening the end with a hammer. The fret is a piece of 1/8th inch round brass rod. I have a piece of felt under the main steel bar that holds down the tines to help keep buzzing to a minimum.

    Beautiful gift.
    The fear is the kids may not appreciate them for another decade - bloody kids :)

    GREAT IDEA junkwood
    For those who don[t know:
    ;
    A fish tape (also known as a draw wire or draw tape) is a tool used by electricians to route new wiring through walls and electrical conduit.[1]
    Made of a narrow band of spring steel, by careful manipulation, the tape can be guided through confined spaces such as wall cavities. The goal is to push toward an area where guide string has been dropped inside the confined space and to pull it through, so the guide string can then be used to pull through various types of wiring, such as phone wire, network cables or speaker wire. Fish tape is designed to pull through guide string only. Using it to directly pull the target wire can damage or warp the fish tape.

    Note 2"
    By putting a thin board over back with 2 , 1 inch holes, you can create a tremolo effect by 'fluttering the fingers over same holes. VERY COOL EFFECT!
    Thanx junkwood...Theres nothing junky about you!

      Excellent and timely information, YosarianCat22. Of course, the 'fish tape' term had me temporarily buffaloed....and then I saw and read your fine post. Great going, and thank you for your good help! I'll try and make one of 'Junkwood's' thumb pianos soon. This looks like a lot of fun.
      You are most correct Yosarian...there is nothing junky about Mr. Junkwood! And your sharing of info to help is so good. Thank you again!

    Hello, I know this isn't the primary subject of your video, but I'd like to ask - I'm looking into carving wood to make all sorts of things at home as a hobby, could you help me with what are the tools needed? Thank you. :)

      Hey Sunny, I'm not really a carving expert, but I think your choice of carving tools may depend on the size of your projects. Very small carving may only require a chip knife, pocket knife and some small little gouges and blades all that you could pick up at a place like a craft store. Often a slightly curved blade that comes to a fine point may help get into small crevices. For very large carving like for outdoor projects you may need various power tools or even a chainsaw perhaps. For intermediate sized relief carving mostly an assortment of gouges would generally be used. I'm sure there's a lot of youtube channels out there that can give you some good ideas. Good luck with your hobby!!
