  • The 5-Note Kalimbas can be tuned to any chord, and when played in turn, a group of children can improvise melodies around an arpeggiated chord progression. They are also great fun for adults, and a great way to learn about chords and chord progressions. Brought to you by Hokema, the same people who make the Sansula. Available at www.kalimbamagi...

Dude you are a kalimba maniac!!! So much talent. House of the rising sun is only one of the best songs in the world and never thought to hear from kalimbas.

My hope is that this can become a common tool in music classrooms - put three of them in three different people's hands and just take turns to make a chord progression.

    Someone,
You can walk, can you? Walking is something you learned over many months, and perfected over several years, and is mainly about putting your limbs, one after the other, in the right place at the right time. I assert that you can do that in much less time with a kalimba. The thing about these kalimbas is that all five of the tines are tuned to a certain chord, and it matters not if you play 1 3 5 3 1 or 5 4 3 2 1 or 1 2 3 4 5 or 5 5 3 3 5. Would you be interested in trying one?

Please explain yourself. Do I humiliate you?
I myself love to play on these, and love even more to get a group to play on these, sort of like a bell choir but much easier to direct. Anyway, I just pulled out a set of 8 of these at our family reunion and we did Pacholbel's Canon with musicians ages 7 through 80 with no rehearsal, and I think we all made our own joy at that time.

Look at - 0:36 - compare the TOP ENDS of the kalimba tines on the F and C7 chordal kalimbas - the F is pretty much straight across, and the C7 tine ends are not...because they have been pushed in to make the vibrating length of the tine shorter, to make a higher note (the low note on the C7 is a G, a whole step up from the low note of F on the F kalimba).
To learn more about kalimba tuning, search UA-cam for "kalimba tuning"

When you explained how kids can play the Kalimba together. It kind of reminds me of kids playing multiplayer on a Gameboy. =P
Wait! Yeah! Great idea! Replace those kids gameboys with these Kalimbas! They have the same shape, they won't know the difference!
BTW, This is really innovative! Good job! =D

im really interested on learning to play kalimba. I've been wanting to get closer to music by playing and instrument for years but never have seen one that looks that simple and beautyful at the same time. First time i heard a Sansula and i though that was the sound of my thoughts. I really wanna get one and learn.
    and that song was amazing¡¡

Actually, I SELL these kalimbas - I retuned them for a Music Educator's conference, and will also take them to a Music Therapy conference. SO, they are not really mine, just waiting to belong to someone else.

My price is $50 for one, and if you purchase in sets, they are less expensive fer each. For 50 Euro, perhaps you are thinking of the 9-Note Pocket Sansula?

Ah, these ones should be in tune. They come from Germany tuned all to F minor (ha!). Yes, well, there aren't very many things you can do with just 5 notes. I suggest a pentatonic tuning. With 6 notes on a pentatonic scale, there are a lot of African American Spirituals and such you can play (will send you a link) - Mark

Just wondering are there some instructions out there that can help us with tuning them in the different keys or is there a book with the cords set up to play different sounds on each. Cause it’s Greek to me Mark

    • @kalimbamagic
      @kalimbamagic  5 років тому

Karen - When someone purchases a set, I ask them what they want to do with the set... sometimes they have chords and a key already.. sometimes I have to come up with that. I tune to the chords as required. There isn't a book for that, but I do rely on past experience, and I'm good at "winging it" to come up with a good voicing for a particular chord (for example, if you have a D chord, you can't actually get down to D for the low note, so you end up having F# (the 3rd) or A (the 5th) in the low tine). When I ship, I make up a two page document that has the CHORDAL KALIMBA TUNINGS on one side (between 3 and 6 kalimbas), plus the suggestion that these kalimbas be played IN TURN so as to create arpeggiated melodies following a chord progression. On the back side is a list of about 20 different chord progressions that work for the particular chords you are getting --- like: ||: C | G | Am | F | C | G | F | C :|| (4 chords, the verse to "Let It Be") or ||: Am | G | F | G :|| (3 chords, "All Along the Watchtower").
This is a unique service - I don't anyone in the world who does this. I guess the "grand instructions" live in my head, and I share as required.

Apparently every time that I post a comment I need Shakespeare to revise it first or something: what I meant is that being such a simple instrument, and watching how easily you can make a symphonic orchestra by just joining like three of them, that makes me feel totally useless because I cannot even beat my nephew using those modern videogame controls. My hand dexterity sucks, so I cannot even imagine myself being able to touch two of those pins in the right sequence. Does this offend you too?
