Op weg naar de UEFA Cup 1992: Torino - Ajax

Ajax is aan een prima Europees seizoen bezig, net als 25 jaar geleden. Toen won Ajax de voorloper van de Europa League, de UEFA Cup. Op 29 april speelde de ploeg van Louis van Gaal de eerste van toen nog twee finalewedstrijden tegen Torino.

Dear Ajax fans, it was a close match between two clubs with complete different tactical and technical backgrounds, it was European cups in the 90s! We lost without loosing this final, actually we were really unlucky, but at the end of the day football is not boxing and you cannot wion on points. Of corse this Ajax was an extremely valuable team, but we also have e to clearly pay credit to that Torino, tactically, technically but mostly for its team spirit. In any case those UEFA Cup nights were magic, unforgettable memories. Umberto

It was that season when I became an AJAX fan, their style of play was enchanting. Both games were balanced, Torino was a wonderful team with Casagrande/Scifo/Lentini but in the end they could not win - nor loose - against the future queen of Europe . In 1991 Ajax narrowly lost the Dutch title being leveled at points with PSV - 53p - both having almost the same goal difference, hence they landed in UEFA Cup instead of European Cup
