    I have been sharpening for some years now and have a fairly good handle on a couple of different methods plus a bunch of money invested in one of the more expensive sharpeners. In the last two days, I have learned a TON about belt sharpening from this channel and wish I had stumbled across this earlier. The speed with which you can obtain a good working edge is impressive!! Thanks for all your tutoring!

    I do everything the same way, same tools etc. I am a retired electronic tech and I don’t enjoy getting shocked so I have a wrist ground strap & wire attached to the ground point on my sander. I attach the ground to the blade handles or other metal objects I am working with when possible to prevent static shock. It helps.

    Technically, that knife was a santoku before it was broken. Santoku's generally have a bit of a rounded belly and don't usually have much a point at the tip. It is now kind of a santoku/chef's knife hybrid. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Very nice work refinishing the surface. I have re-ground several broken knives on a regular bench grinder, and I have GOT to get me one of these. Love the box idea.

    I love the router speed control, and the 90 degree tilt box.... Never thought of the!! Now I got to make a box!! Personally, I would not have removed the back curvature... It is good for rocking cutting of vegetables... Like cooks knives. PS - I like to use the top part of the belt that is unsupported by the steel backing. It is more forgiving with amount of pressure you put on the belt..

    Thank you for all the hard work of informing us and our common passion that you transmit via your channel. I know that making a video and editing it takes a lot of time.
    Could you occasionally make a video of sharpening large kitchen knives 35 cm long 12inch to 15 inch on the port or long thin flexible fillet knife. Thanks again for your informative channel.

    Good job on the video. The scope shots were nice. I'm kind of new to sharpening (trying to get my salmon knife up to speed), one thing that wasn't clear to me in your presentation is when were you rotating the belt away from the blade (stropping?) & when was it going towards the blade (sharpening?)

    • @CurryCustomCutlery
      @CurryCustomCutlery  5 років тому +1

      Edge trailing(away from blade) must always be used for stropping and scotch brite belts...sharpening can be done either edge leading or trailing...Hope that helps, I just re-watched this video and its a bit long and confusing.

    • @CurryCustomCutlery
      @CurryCustomCutlery  6 років тому +2

      You can to a small extent. Anything more then very light scratches and the scotch brite wont remove them, what scotch brite does do well is take an old dull blade and make it look shiny again. A combo of sandpaper and a final buff with scotch brite works great.

    Nice video. for your consideration >> At 16:00 you comment about setting the angle on your jig at 15 (dps I assume). So 15 + Primary Bevel angle = dps of secondaries. It appears that in your videos that you reference that you angle guide setting is the same as the resultant dps edge bevel, without consideration that you are placing primary bevel on your guide.

    • @CurryCustomCutlery
      @CurryCustomCutlery  6 років тому

      Yes. Some knives have a natural flat that can be sharpened from, and some have a 1-2 degree primary bevel to sharpen from. The overall inclusive DPS(degree per side) measured from center line of knife would be the sum of the primary and the secondary angle. I dont mention it for easy of use. You sound like a Wicked Edge user? :-)

    • @GravityRoller
      @GravityRoller 6 років тому +1

      Yes, I understand some knives have a "natural flat" (example Saber Grind - High or Low Saber Grind). My comment, however, was specific to the knife in your video and other vid's you have posted where you are placing primary bevel on your guide (would be same situation with a High Saber on that guide you are using).
      RE: your reference to primary bevels at one to two degrees, I find most I sharpen are at 3-5 dps or greater, and 11-13 on Scandi Grinds.
      Why would you assume I use a Wicked Edge ... I do not ;-)
      My comments are meant in a positive meaningful way, as simply a suggestion for you to consider. I find many people really just don't consider what they are doing when they talk about angles and sharpening.
      I like your videos (especially with regard to what appears to be a DC Motor Mod & Variable Power Supply) and had hoped to contribute to you in a positive manner.
      I use variable A/C belt grinder for larger work, and also a customised Edge Pro type system for flat bevels and secondary transitional bevels for controlled convexing or multi-beveling secondaries.

    • @CurryCustomCutlery
      @CurryCustomCutlery  6 років тому +3

      All good I didnt take your comments in anything but a constructive manner. :-)
      When I was "training" on my Wicked Edge, the people there are very scientific and comments such as this would come up often. Tolerance, variance, 10ths of degrees of angles, etc. Very precise calculations...I can mention it for others in a video as it is an important detail Ive never bothered to address so thank you very much!
      For a similar kitchen knife with a full primary grind from spine to edge bevel the inclusive angle I just measured was 2.05 degrees, or 1.025(lets call it 1) degrees per side. If a true 15dps was critical Id adjust the angle guide down by 1 degree.
      For ease of reference and repeatably when sharpening various items I just keep the jig/guide at 15 and call it 15, knowing in my mind that the actual measured 2nd bevel angle will be a fraction off but close to that.

    • @redangrybird7564

      +Gravity Roller I have noticed that when I cut tomatoes with a knife sharpened at exactly 15 dps they taste real good, but if I prepare a salad with tomatoes cut with a knife sharpened at 15 dps +primary bevel, that is 15+1.025=16.025 dps the tomatoes taste awful and I have to discard the salad away. 😁✌

    I'm stumped here.. have you reversed the machine so that you're actually sharpening edge trailing? I thought sharpening edge-leading on a belt was dangerous?

    • @theIndoCurrys
      @theIndoCurrys 2 роки тому

      There is alot of mis information that gets repeated out there. In general edge leading is dangerous and should never sharpen with belt moving towards you for sure.
      But when using an angle guide of this type is removes the danger and allows for a very accurate method of sharpening.
      Soft belts like leather, felt or scotch brite still always need to be used edge trailing away.

    @Curry Custom Cutlery I know this is a super old video for you. When I first setup my 1x30 sander I was stropping the very 1st knife I sharpened on it when the stropping belt let go at the seam. I was tentative as it was but when that happened it was loud and it nearly pulled the knife out of my hand. 🫣
    I have some really good Cyanoacrylate adhesive and instant adhesive activator spray and thought... What the heck, I have absolutely nothing to lose so I very carefully glued, clamped and sprayed it. Being paranoid I waited overnight but probably could have only waited a few minutes and it would have been fine to use. I've been running it 2+ months with no issues. The manufacturer sent me a replacement and I'll definitely glue the seam from the backside before using it. 😆 Question for you, I see you now using a 600 grit Scotch Brite belt in your van setup. Do you prefer it over leather for kitchen knives and pocket knifes?
    Thanks buddy. 👍
