  • Excited would be an understatement! Building an Overland Vehicle on a Budget is the brand new series where we take a 4x4 vehicle from factory standard to adventure ready whilst keeping to a strict budget. Starting with a 4wd that we think is readily available and at the reasonable end of the used 4x4 market.

    Hi
    Kristina can't stop smiling, is this going to be her baby ??
    Please show as much details as possible, this project is going to be so helpful for novices like me who want to do the same thing but have zero knowledge.
    Can't wait for the next episode. 👏🏻👍👍

      Jack would you still purchase this model year even if you had more to spend say up to 8k
      What was your reason for this model type engine etc.
      Does it have cam belt or chain.
      Will you be lifting it ?

    • @JKoverland
      @JKoverland  3 роки тому

      Probably would yes! With that budget could get a mk4 a little younger. It's the 3.2 diesel auto and it is a cam chain on these. Solid motor and trans of you look after it 👌

    Shoguns are very underrated off road, because most were driven on roads! I had a 2002 manual which was excellent and I regret selling. Have a look at the Long way round motorcycle series, they took a stock 2004 lwb Warrior, stuck a couple of bash plates on it, and drove it around the world via Mongolia, Siberia, and the road of bones, it never missed a beat!

    • @JKoverland
      @JKoverland  3 роки тому

      Exactly! You said it!! They are often looked past and that helps with the prices being reasonable and not going up and up like some others we all know 😂

    Salut from France
    I did same choice as you 2 years ago...got a 2001 pajero 3.2 DID Exceed I use every day and for overland with kids. Currently few mods on it: 3rd raw seat has been removed, replaced by a 40l watertank below the floor and homemade drawers in the trunk. Once rear seats are folded I can put a 2x1.4 meter airbed to sleep.
    My pajero has mix tyres at original size (oversize tires not allowed at technical inspection in France). Nothing on suspension yet. I believe it will be next mod, this car needs to be lifted..., but have to change bushes first that are stuck into chassis... :(
    Waiting for your next videos that will give me good ideas for sure :)
    A bientôt !

    I was worried for Molly, glad you are keeping her.
    I would have gone for a 2nd generation montero, but thats too similar to Molly.
    The 3rd gen isn't as modification friendly but the engine and drivetrain is rock solid.
    The independent suspension is super comfortable but you can only do a mild suspension lift (I think the front axle is the same 8" as most of the monteros had) and a body lift isn't an option.
    The plastic rear bumpers are famous for working more like a scoop, so you can carry around a bit of everywhere you go. I'd be interested in what a set of bumpers would do for that. That probably has stock skidplates, I dont know if they will be able to cope with anything offroad
    Excited to see what you do with this. And once again...jealous you've got a diesel

    • @JKoverland
      @JKoverland  3 роки тому +1

      Oh no worries there she is going nowhere 😁 it's a good base vehicle and enough gear out there to turn it into a solid and sensible tourer which is the plan 😀 maybe we have more parts here in the UK but certainly mods not as available like some vehicle we know 😉

    Great video and best of luck with the build.
    After years of owning my gen 2 Paj i took a deep breath and bought a Disco 3 which has taken us all over the UK and southern Europe.
    2nd battery install with extra LED's and power sockets has been a winner along with tinting the windows.
    Like yours will be, mine is a work in progress with an engine remap and EGR valves blanking kit to come plus a few body mods such as tree sliders and maybe a raised air intake.
    Regular servicing is key to longevity and reliability.
    Looking forward to the future videos

    heavy duty shocks & coils (2 inch lift), rear bumper, 1 inch bigger on tire, roof rails with rack, DIY Aluminum Extrusions for rear loading area. extra battery when you want lighting and freezer. if you do side steps then just add some additional reinforcements.

    Be interesting to see how this goes.
    My only real experience of modern Mitsu's is working on a friend's L200 Warrior which is, I'm afraid, a pile of cheap & nasty, rusty, unreliable, garbage.
    One thing that gives me the heeby-jeebies about modern 4x4s is when the infotainment system also acts as a control for things like the satnav, traction-control, air-con etc.
    I'd rather just have switches and knobs controlling stuff and gauges displaying information cos it's all much easier to add, remove or modify things.

    • @JKoverland
      @JKoverland  3 роки тому

      These are a pretty solid base as an overlander from what I've seen. Seems well put together, tbf almost anything will rust in the UK with the salt roads 😂

    Looks a mint example, with having all that done already may also be worth doing the timing chain on that, the 2 main things that kill the 3.2’s the fuel pump/filler issue and the chain guides disentegrating, people think it’s just the top guides that is the issue but my mk4 the top guide failed completely and when replacing the chain the other guides all had cracks and one was completely missing and half way through the metal aswell

    • @JKoverland

      @@JKoverland its not massively common but it definitely does happen. mine was only 78k ish on a mk4 3.2... and supposedly the recall had been done for the top guide only couple of year/few thousand mile ago from when i got it. whether it had actually been done i dont know. but if i ever got another 3.2 id definitely want the chain and guides doing after seeing my first one. the chain was running metal on metal where the top guide was supposed to be, and the bottom one there was barely anything left of the metal bracket the chain had already ate through it.

    Have ARB front bumper, steel aftermarket back bumper and rock sliders installed. Bought Frontrunner roofrack with water and fuel tanks, and frontrunner rooftop tent. Have 270 batwing awning.

      @jeanloock4930 3 роки тому +2

      @@JKoverland Wont need a timing chain anytime soon, but the top chain guide should be inspected and replaced preventatively. If the plastic on the guide wears it can cause the chain to jump teeth on the timing gear which will obviously result in ugly things happening since its an interference motor. The chain and tensioners are rock solid. Only change the change when the tensioner is at maximum. We will be replacing the chain on our Gen 3 3.2 in the next few months for that reason. Its just on 400k km now and its not had an easy life touring around Southern Africa.
      The injector pump has never needed work (the pump does not like running out of diesel so never run it dry as fuel actually cools the pump). Gearbox is the auto and its still 100%. We change ATF fluid with genuine Mitsu spec Dia Queen SP III every 80k km or less if its been offroad a lot.
      We don't have salted roads in SA so the only rust issue we get is in the sunroof frame (water ingress when the rubber seals lift due to debris/dust). Seal off the area between the glass and the rubber seal with a good sikaflex and it will last a lifetime. Enjoy the Paj, its an epic vehicle that just does its thing without any concerns.

    Sweet looking Mitsy.
    One question though: all the modern electrics do mean more things to go wrong and hard to locate/repair on the road, don't they?? Moly and her age fellows usually have mechanical gremlins only, that can be sorted out with some grease and a nice big hammer I guess 😁

    Halo
    the topic
    Iron running boards side pedal Mitsubishi Pajero 2002 - 2003 equipped with side lighting
    I watched the video of your car and the work was excellent, as was the explanation, and I really liked watching it
    I have a question: where can I buy what is shown in the message above, or the correct name for the foot pedal under the doors, or if there is a specific site? If you know, can you send me the name of the site?
    Thank you and have a nice day

    Do yourself a favour and service the auto box asap, and don't just change the ATF, change the filter in the auto box, and use only Dia Queen ATF from Mitsubishi - I skipped that step and had to replace the auto box , which cost a fortune !!!!
    Wish someone had told me that when I bought it, most people just change the oil and don't Bother replacing the filter as its a mission to get to, but do it asap, for your own peace of mind.

    Glad to see you got another rig. I have to admit, while I loved my early Pajero it was amazing unreliable.
    You did not mention it, does your new one have the factory rear diff lock? If not, do you plan to add it?
    I'd imagine they can be had at a decent price in several wecker yards by now.

      Must have been unlucky there. Molly the mk1 has never left us stranded and we put her through hell and back 😅 only the recent turbo but that was our fault for fitting a China core only 6 months before 🙈

      @@JKoverland Keep in mind, this was in the US. We had the 2.8 non turbo petrel. It was notorious for over heating. 5 speed was also well know for the 3rd and 4th syncros going bad. At least it was easy to work on though. Thought about getting another one, but living in Germany now.. parts are hard to come by.

    Nice. Just out of interest how come you only get autos? You just prefer then off road?

    Great choice with the Mitsubishi, I think it's only a matter of a few years or a year before they start skyrocketing too now when people are realising how good they actually are for what they cost. You can get them for pennies in sweden. Would you recommend one for a first time overland build on a bit of a budget?

    Hey guys I want to ask you something about the engine, so you always use diesel engines but what if a 4L V8 1UZ patrol engine is fitted in a 2001 Pajero? Does this make sense? I recently found one for a decent price but am still hesitant due to the lack of my experience... Wish you both best of luck with this new project btw, I'm really inspired by what you do, almost going to change my life actually

      Hey 👋 well that sounds pretty cool to be honest! The 1uz v8 is a toyota motor normally out of a Lexus so will be completely custom so if its an overlander may not be the best first vehicle considering parts etc will all be different. Might work better getting something stock and working with that 😃✌

    • @Nas-Acuna
      @Nas-Acuna 3 роки тому

      @@JKoverland That is actually very accurate, although this is a reliable engine but it is made for lexus and toyota cars, it wouldn't be very ideal to fit it in an overlander mitsubishi. I appreciate you puting the time to reply to my comment, I'm a big fan already.... love and respect from Jordan.

    Guess I might Subscribe and watch this build. Love my 2002 NM 3.5L V6 Pajero. If you need any ideas check my channel and see how I've set mine up in the back for touring/overlanding. They are a great vehicle and such a pleasure to drive that's for sure. Have to say your one looks very nice and clean. Well looked after by the looks of it.

    Wow okay I think I would’ve gone Toyota for reliability but downside to Toyota cost of buying its most definitely blue I think it was Show lots of scratches maybe see if a sponsor would wrap it definite remove all the backseats and maybe the towbar on showguns protrude along way out oh yeah seat covers black leather gets hot and if you Forget and jumping in shorts on a hot sunny day you will regret it One last thing a name for her😁🇬🇧👍
