Installing a CBR600RR shock on a Suzuki Bandit 600

- The replacement rear shock finally turned up for ASBO, the Suzuki Bandit 600, so I thought I would get it fitted so I can get the bike back on the road. Hopefully this will be a vast improvement over the stock shock.

Ah, just spent this afternoon setting up the suspension on my Tuono, ready for some B roads now. Another great vid👍
Take a screwdriver with you as I'm pretty sure you'll want to tweak it a bit when everything warms up matey 😁👍
Have fun dude
Cheers bud yeah and as for forks i got some 1999 haybusa forks and front end for mine also will be looking for a shock now cheers and like your vids there very raw and honest but equally brilliant fella..
Thank you very much for watching fella much appreciated 👍
the bike sounds good mate, I'm looking forward to seeing the frame jig build & the evolution of project ASBO.
Gonna be a good one with any luck. Thanks Jim, much appreciated 😁👍
That was quite a soundtrack 😂, Well done Quicky 👍
Hehehe... She's alright, init 🤣😂👍
Hi Quicky love the aSbo sticker
Hehehe... Such a child 😂🤣😁
Wow! I thought the roads in London & the southeast were in a really bad condition, but the state of them in Devon look like they are on a whole different level! Ride safe.
They're shocking matey...
I came out one day early in the morning and somebody had planted bounces of daffodils in the pot holes up Victoria Hill... Brought a smile to my face that did. The council filled all the pot holes in 3 weeks later 😂🤣👍
Quick Bikes 😂😂😂
Ah the joys of single handed complex tasks 😁
I heard about the gynaecologist that wallpapered his hallway through the letter box 😁
So awkward trying to hold everything in place and stick a bolt through it all 🤣😂
Awesome, middle of winter here in NZ, parked up in front of the fire enjoying seeing you out and about having a hoon. Look forward to seeing more riding vids, Asbo sounds great, might have to get a louder pipe for my CB1300 in the spring I think :0) Cheers M.
New Zealand.... Now I'm jealous... 😂🤣 Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it 😁👍
Bike sounded sweet going through the tunnel I always drop it down one every time I go through that tunnel on my bike😁
I'm pretty sure it's the law, but I could be wrong 😂🤣👍
I'm loving your work, my mk1 600/750 is my baby. 41mm GSX600/750F forks will offer some damping adjustment though you'd need to swap the legs over as they wear different calipers. I opted to fit preload adjustable fork tops instead which have made a hell of a difference. £20 well invested.
Nice one 😁👍
The new forks have turned up along with the yokes apparently, but I still need to sort out disc, calipers etc yet as well
Hi Quickie
Ex refugee from Mutley so now your test track well. Thanks for the great vid of grafting in the CBR shocker. After watching you doing this mod I have done likewise on my 1996 GSF600 but I had the advantage of a bare frame and swinging arm. I have got Ikon front springs which I reckon with the Showa shock should be the dogs danglies....I have been using the 1200 sprocket ratio's which makes the bike handle better in traffic. Might see you some time on the A38 and have a mutual hoon! Stay safe...Wolfy.
Ah, a local lad 😁
Its instantly better supported with that shock in the back don't you think? I've still got the front end swap to do using the Triumph forks and hopefully i get a bike that handles and is fully adjustable. ASBO is a bit of a test bed for future projects, but it's fun working it all out 😆👍
Another step in the right direction Quicky, think you past racing experience is helping you with this project mate. Just get them 955 Forks mate it will look fantastic buddy and handle miles better. Look forward to the next vid buddy take care now
Cheers, slowly but surely its getting there. I'm back on GIXIT now though as I want Steve O out riding again as well 😁👍
decent scenery that...enjoying the journey thus far with "asbo"
Cheers Ron, thanks for watching 😁👍
Sounds great and pulls clean. Surprisingly a GoPro taped inside a helmet works pretty good 😁👍
It's alright init 🤣😁👍
I need to get some velcro or something to make a mount for the mic in the lid, but it proved I can use it anyways I guess 😁👍
Hello again :D ....lolled at ASBO bike on the garage door :D
Hehehe... That took aaaaaages to get to look right 🤣😂
ASBO LOL!! A joly and sociable guy like you hahahaha , the acidic plumb is getin more sweeeeeett !!! cheers!!
I used to be a gynecologist. Then I went into painting and decorating. You didn't need to be at home, I could do your hall, stairs and landing through the letterbox. I still like to keep my hand in.
Hehehe.... Do you ever reckon a gynecologist goes home at night thinking "if I have to look at another one of them I'm gonna jump off something high..." 😅🤣😂
new to your channel i have a 600/750 bandit with gsx 750 front and rear just need to get it running properly then happy days
Welcome to the party matey. Your bike sounds a bit like GIXIT. We found him a bit long with the swingarm and short in the forks once all assembled. You may have to play around with dog bones and ride height a bit from what I can see if you've only just done it. I'd be very interested to know how you changed it around as we've not finished GIXIT yet and it could prove handy 😉
Thanks for chipping in matey and best of luck with your bike 😁👍
Hi Quicky. Thanks for another great vid! I like the aSbo logo. Apart from your welding, do you have experience in Art/Design etc? Cheers.
Cheers, I used to be an airbrush artist and graphic designer at one point. I may well be getting the airbrushes out again if a project demands it 🤣😁👍
shock looks miles better done well getting it in on your own i probley would have used my chin to hold the bike up and the bolts would be about a mm away from my finger tips ...road trip was nice with a little bit of history chucked in ..make a tour guide of you yet lol...........keep um coming im off for a quicky
Hehehe... It was nice to show the beastie actually running 🤣😂👍
Quicky mate. You've got to get yourself a better mike and camera for rides out. The investment will pay off no end. I really enjoyed the riding vlogs. You are a natural. Keep it up!!!!!
Ps the triumph forks are good. My speed triple 955i forks are difficult to get right. Get your sag. Then go for a ride. If it weaves at high speed, back off the rebound till it's stable. Mine is 1 turn from fully in. I am double your weight so your setting obviously will be more. Hope this helps speed things up as you know more than me about setup. Laters
Cheers, thank you Rob 😁👍
The setup is going to be an odd one as the forks are built for a different bike which has a different weight, wheelbase, brakes etc... Quite a bit has to change on ASBO to make them usable, but no reason why they shouldn't work out peachy 😁
Good tip on the 955i forks new you'd like em, they benefit from the ktech road kit.... More expense lol worth it though
They turned up today and I'm itching to see what they look like. Need to sort out a few other bits before I can fit them though... 😁👍
nice to see you back here again mate, i bet asbo is loads better now? it sounds ok as well!
Not twitchy or anything and turns in really easily. I quite like the soundtrack too 🤣😂👍
Getting there👍👍 What video editing programme do you use Quicky? I’m a Luddite with computers!!
Cheers Nigel and I use the Adobe suite for pretty much everything I do... Adobe Premier Pro is the video editing software and some of the effects were done in Adobe After Effects (like the writing on the shop door)
But it's Purple!!...It is!..Purple!!...Just kiddin..lol...I like Showa's...over here everybody wants/gets Olin's..don't get me wrong, they are great but also great $$$..For "off track" bikes, I think Showa's are plenty good enough..You can get used one's off Ducati's for $15.00....Haven't tried the Triumph ft end yet..most of mine are R6 or GSXR...(again..the $$)..Happy Riding!!..👍👍👍🗽🇺🇸
I think Ohlins are bought for the name more than anything and if you set it up wrong it's gonna be as bad as anything else anyways. The Showa suspension on my Fireblade was awesome once it got fettled with. Trouble is the stock stuff is all built to a budget and aftermarket stuff is just better 😁👍
Good morning, sorry if my english is not very good. I am French and have been watching your videos for over a year now. I really admire what you do. cheer. little question, to mount a cbr600rr shock absorber have you modified anything? I work on a b6 1998 cafe racer in advance thank you for your information
Hiya matey and thank you for watching. If memory serves, the only thing I had to do was put a washer either side of the top mount. Since then I've made a new frame so everything was made to fit 😁👍
And your English is very good matey 👍
does sound good through the tunnel :)
Hehehe... I'm such a child 🤣😂
Quick Bikes ,, loud noises whilst inside a tunnel 🤔, hmmm , how far could we take this one ?😜
Awww.... You're SO bad you're good...
Anyways, more noise normally means more fun in my experience 😉🤣😂
Quick Bikes ,, well I go off at about 107 , so together we would make a racket 😘
Hehehe... Make some NOISE 🤣😂👍
Good to see that a to CBR shock swap works, even if it wasn't a direct match. Dropping the rear a touch again may help with the weight transfer. Is it worth spending £100 on a Hagon fork spring set while you wait for the funds for a 955i front end, just to make it more rideable in the interim?
Don't really think so at this point. Preload is on position 3 from soft, so lots of adjustment left. The project bike when built should be lighter, so I may end up swapping the spring at that point. Good shout though, I like your thinking 😁👍
Anyone know where I can get a standard shock for a bandit 600 2004 in UK.
Your off ya head fella pmsl but I love it .Its a pitty you down live in London ace cafe and box hill you wud love it there is about 11 of us with bandits aboute 7 mk1 4 mk2 s great fun
Gotta have a giggle matey 🤣😂
I really want to get to Ace Cafe at some point, but will probably wait till ASBO has been cafe'd and Steve O's bike is on the road. Would be a very cool day trip 😁👍
@@QuickBikes I'm just looking at a 600 suzuki bandit mk2 to play with. So I'll have a mk1 and 2
I'm quite impressed with it so far... It's never going to set the world alight, but dead easy to work on and lots of possibilities
@@QuickBikes and most of all 100-percent bulletproof I'm 53 and I've had mine for 11 years engines never give me any trouble just a regular service look after it's after me
"I think we're in, it's snug" the words of a true Gynaecologist! 😂
😂🤣👍I missed my calling I think 😁
I'm sure there's an opening somewhere! 😂
Hiya quickie mike here should there be a number plate light on it for the MOT mate cheers mike, right some adivice pls mate the rear brake reservoir want to put it under my seat instead of behind the rear fairing, because its a pain every time you want to bleed it or top it up, so what you think mate near the battery i thought what you think mate cheers mike ;-)
Hi Mike, the numberplate light isn't an mot thing I don't think, but the boys in blue want one and have the power to make you install one. As far as relocating the reservoir, you can pretty much put it where you want really as long as it won't get hot (like near the exhaust) and there's nothing around it that doesn't react well to brake fluid as we all have our clumsy days 🤣😂👍
Just my thoughts anyways 😁👍
Hi quicky good job m8, I love the way you clean the axle nuts, chain adjusters but not your grubby hand prints off the swing arm Haha just joking 😂😂
Hehehe... I didn't did I... 🤣😂😁
Did you check do the 20mm lowering dogbones bring ride height to stock, and how did it affect rideability? And how long these lowering dogbones are compared to stock ones?
I cant remember off the top of my head, but I did write it all down and have the videos for reference 😁👍
@@QuickBikes Just fitted similar damper to my bandit and measured on center stand from tip of rear fork straight up to frame it is 4cm higher now. Assuming that lowering kits are measured at seat height -25mm dogbones could be pretty close?
Excellent, how much was the shock & how much do you recon you can get the forks for bud :)
Shock was only £75, second hand off eBay which was a bargain. I just cleaned it up a little but it's going to get stripped down, dressed up and repainted when the project kicks off and I cut the bike up. Its fine for now though. I also just had a message saying the forks and yokes have arrived at the shop which is mega. Very keen to go see what they look like but I have work in a bit so it'll have to wait till tomorrow. Will still need to sort out the wheel, discs and calipers though as the current ones won't work 😁👍
@@QuickBikes I thought you might like this... ua-cam.com/video/6n_E3nmhbt0/v-deo.html
so when you need to lower the rear end you must buy a longer dog bone ???
thats my first experiences with those mono-shock
Gef
Hehe yes... But don't go too far with it as it'll mess up other stuff 😁👍
Do u need to take all the back end off the bandit to replace a standard shock with the same.
Probably not I would.think, I just took this route to show things more clearly on the video... 😁
Either way it's not a difficult job to do matey 👍
. good video. But you got some going to keep up with Matt 😂. Should get a dog as well. Ps hope to set up my white power unit shock weekend
Hehehe, never gonna get that many videos out 😂🤣
The should end up handling really well by th time I'm done and it's the twisty bits that hold all the fun. The only advice I would give is try to get the laden sag right first as it's the one thing that makes the biggest difference. Best of luck 😁👍
What about her 750 forks off the slabside mk1 I think it is
Could work out, but I just like the look of the 955 forks more. I'll have all the adjustment so we should be good 😁👍
Another corker quickie, I'd love to take me v twin through that tunnel 😁😂😂
Hehehe... Twins sound mega in there 😂🤣👍
rear end better?
Is that a second hand shock? was it serviced before fitting?
is the oil as old as the shock? is there gas pressure in the shock ? 140 psi 10 bar or is it down to 70psi or less?
rear end is now showing up the front ends progressive springs and woeful damping.
Answer
Bandit spring "according to what I found on interent?" is a progressive 35 x 295mm spring [nice for plush ride and early braking or your MX bike]
linear springs 8.5 -9 nm but thats a £100 investment???
CB900 springs are 35mm 285mm linear so this and some 38mm washers stacked and packed to make up the correct preload. or maybe there are 35 x295mm linear springs in a production bike ??? I didn't look that hard to be fair.
SVI 20w maybe 30w oil and the front end should be somewhere half reasonable and a small investment on the current suspension when compared to the £ hundreds on a set of fully adjustable forks, and triple tees which most probably will be secondhand and also need servicing £££.
So somewhere between £60 -£80 to my mind should put you in a more confident position. The fully adjustable is the way to go if you can afford it but I thought I'd put this out there for anyone looking for a bit more feel but do not have the budget for a full swap out.
A good comment, thank you 👍
I could spend time sorting out different spring and either going for a cartridge emulator or making my own stack, but to do the job right you'd need to modify the damping rod in the middle of the shock really as well. Thing is, once I project build it the bike will be sold on to fund the next project and rather than force the new owner to have to strip the forks apart to get them working as they wish, a fully adjustable set is probably the way to go. Rear shock was serviced 500 miles ago so all is good, but it's getting it again when I build the bike 😁👍
Thanks for chipping in
@@QuickBikes 2 paths for learning go to university learn how to write about what you learned have some hands on experience.
Suck it and see stripe it down, F£$k it up but understand where you went wrong and get it right next time at your own expense.
UA-cam and other sources are part of the latter.
So thank you for spending the time to share your experience with us.
Thanks again for answering the shock Question not many riders consider the suspension as serviceable items and less know what to do when it fails and then spews' its contents opting to buy replacement because "that's what the man in the shop said!"
The man in the shop have little or no experience of shock or cartridge fork servicing.
Anyway look forward to the next video and keep up the great work.
Thank you for watching matey 😁👍
What year is that shock fella 2003 4 maybe 🤔 cheers
Yeah, I think so.... can't remember now as that video was done quite a while back, but I'm sure I mentioned the year at some point 🤔😁👍
Front forks on eBay right now - buy it now 129.99. - Keep it up Quickie, love your work.
My set turned up today 😂😁👍
Think I'll stick with these ones fella.
Thanks for watching and chipping in
i got a wp rcma for my fj project:P probably a bit overkill, but it'll look nice
As long as you set it up right it should be awesome... 😁👍
@@QuickBikes yeah, but first i need to finish the swingarm.
it is a nico bakker f1 frame, should be interesting to ride
Ah right 😁👍
Quite the project then. Sounds really interesting dude 👍👍
Did the newer shock need any spacers?
Just a washer either side on the top mount. The bottom was fine 😁👍
Wouldn’t you need to fit a stronger spring due to the weight differences of the 2 bikes?
With the fazer the R6 shock is a like for like but needs the spring changing... demon-tweets sell Faulkner’s race springs for the exact reason and they are about £30
Good comment 😁👍
I weigh 94kg in full kit and the bike is basically stock. The rear shock has the stock spring in it and current set up has the preload collar on peg 3 from the softest setting, so I think we're OK for now. Once it gets built as a project the springs front and rear will be replaced as needed as the bike should be a fair bit lighter by then. Thanks for chipping in 😁👍
Quick Bikes ahhh ok fair enough :)
Keep up the good work 😁😁
Or honda fireblade pre2000 forks aren't triumph ones the same?
I think the bottoms of the legs are slightly different and I really like the look of them. Should look really good with no mudguard etc. I'll be trying out different options on future bike though I think and will bear it in mind 😁👍
whichever ones you put on I'm sure you will make them work brilliantly 👍
Hope so... It should work out all good, but we'll have to wait and see for now 😁👍
ahhh
i just dismantle my Bandit 400 rear shock to install a new shock from a Bandit 1200.i took some pictures BEFORE but these were not close enough,
i think my pivot is upside down ,,to bad i cannot add a picture here so you would tell me and i could not see here on your video how yours is fit there,,
not my day

The joys of messing around with bikes hey 🤣😂 I found all sorts od stuff on ASBO that was 'interesting'... Have you got a manual or maybe try Googling images?
@@QuickBikes yes i printed the 400 manual and not much photo but i received an answer on a Facebook group and my pivot is on the right side.-4 celcius here this morning,i will do a test ride ans see how is the rear suspension with the "new used' shock. After she will be stored in my garage table for winter and will do some work on her.thanks very much for your response "Appreciate your videos .Gef
Good good, hope it worked out for you 😁👍
@@QuickBikes well today i tried the 1200 shock ,,ride around where the road is bumped ,,,man it was a catapulted :-) ,,,, and than i came back in my garage and installed the Bandit 600 that i also baught,,it worked way better.the adjustment are 1 on the spring and 1 on the Wheel under the shock (forgot what is used for) anyway that way better but now the front fork need new springs and oil but that will be for my winter projet here.Gef
so one clean Bandit 1200 shock for sale .i paid it 85 $ canadian
Nice one. I ended up with a CBR600RR shock in the back of ASBO and I have yet to swap the front forks out. The 600 set has bugger all control over tge damping and I just found it too soft and bouncy. Good winter project though 😁👍
What year cbr is that off mate?
Fits a CBR600RR from 2003 to 2006
One of the few times that having a Beadle hand would’ve been preferable.
SO awkward.... 😂🤣👍
ya throught of putting a gixxer front end in asbo?
Hehehe... It's 70mm shorter lol, so would need some major changes to work right. For now I just want to keep the geometry Suzuki intended and see what tweaks can sharpen it all up a bit 😁👍
@@QuickBikes or here's an idea the gxsf front end ?
Do you know if a Suzuki GSXR 600 750 k6 k7 OEM Rear Shock fits a suzuki bandit 600 mk1
I'm not sure if I'm honest... I went for the cbr600rr shock in the end as its spot on. I found that through Google... just measure the shock length and width of the unions, the manual will tell you travel.lengths and you're just looking for.something similar then... hope that helps 😁

How much do you think this will cost me to do considering I'll have to pay a mechanic to do it?
What, replace the shock?
It's a couple of hours work I should think, but it's not difficult at all. I'm dead fussy with cleaning and lubing stuff whilst I'm in there and it total it probably took me 4 hours. That's with the waffling as well 😂🤣
@@QuickBikes That's not bad. I'll consider changing the shock on my bandit. I always thought it was a bit too soft. You described the handling perfectly.
It's not difficult to do, just depends if you have the tools to do it really I guess. Best of luck anyway 😁👍
So when are you getting a dog in your videos to keep up with mat and Craig
We've got two of them... A border collie that's old and a husky that's stupid 🤣😂😅
