    My first Leica that I've ever bought was the original Leica Q back in 2015 and even though I also had a digital Leica M for a while I am convinced that the Leica Q is the better M, especially if you primarily shoot 28mm. In this video I am explaining my reasons why and maybe it helps you to make the decision which one to get.

    Yup, leaf shutter and flash is awesome! Even better: The X100 also has built-in ND. Combine those two and for a close up portrait you can overpower the sun at high noon at f/2 with a speedlight. 😉

    Great video Sir, I have been using my M8 for so many years and had a chance to borrow a Q couple of months but then I just didn't get the feeling that I was hoping. Ended up using my Ricoh GR if want a quick fix relaxing walk one-handed experience. Still have my heart on the M system that OVF still my better choice.

    Great video! I’ve had every digital M since the M8, except M11. I just got a Q2 Reporter and I love it! The macro mode is so much fun. 28 is not my first choice, I’m more of a 50 shooter on the M, but what a great 2 camera kit for travel and walking around. If I had to pick one, M for me for the focal length options , but the Q is amazing.

    As a glasses wearer, the VF blockage with a fast 28mm lens on an M body is actually the lesser of the evils. I can see about 60% of the framelines, and either I must move my eye around behind the VF to get a sense of what's in the frame, or I need to previsualise based on what I think will be within the image. The Q/Q2/Q2M is easier to use, and I feel like I get more consistent results. But I enjoy the challenges that come with the M and obviously the ability to go wider (I love 21mm) and longer (75mm and 90mm) because they become more practical with liveview on the M10+. They're complementary systems. Q2M was my gateway drug back into Leica after a decade away but I'm not sure I could live only with this and nothing else.

    Hehe...the eternal struggle ;) I have written this in the past, but i went through two Qs the first a Titanium and second the Q-P which i loved. I went through a phase though and wanted an M with different lenses to be able to shoot an analogue M body and switch lenses between them. So went with an M4 and a M240 and sold my Q-P. Never since then i go through phases regretting it even though i love my lenses and M240 as well. I since sold the M4 and bought a Bessa R2a which i really like and its close to an M6 from what i know in functionality and with those lenses the images are pretty nice i will say.
    But from time to time i toy with the idea that if a Q2-P comes along which im sure at some point it will, i might sell the M and lenses and get that....but not sure lol. But, i will say that the Q for street and documentary is one of the best cameras i have ever used :)

    Hello, I'm a digital M owner (M10D). The Q is interesting only for the 28mm and the EVF. I'm a 35/40mm shooter and the biggest advantage is that I can switch the lens when I want. The cropping mode of the Q doesn't fit me because the perspective and the bokeh of the 28mm lens isn't the same than others lenses... I would consider to go to a Q when the optics xould be interchangeable.

    Interesting . I use an M4 /sl2s/246 and my compact is a CL system on which I can also use my M lenses making for a super compact "M". Often tempted by a Q body in place of the CL as a compact but would the increase in picture quality ( if there is one ? ) make up for the loss of versatility ?

    Thank you for the comparison!
    I have the M11 and the Q2 reporter.
    At first I had an M10-R which I exchanged for a new M11.
    First of all, since I have no idea about digital photography, I wanted a digital camera that behaves exactly like an analog camera and only stores the photos digitally, so I got the M10-R first.
    Then I noticed with the M10-R that the sensor got dirty relatively quickly, I didn't know about this problem.
    That's how I came to the Q2, which doesn't have these dust on the sensor problems because of the dust and weather protection.
    However, I'm the 50mm guy, I had several analog lenses, but relatively quickly used the 50mm almost exclusively as my personal favorite lens.
    The Q2 with 28mm, some even say mathematically it's more like 24mm for me, I've only had it for a few weeks, has the difficulty of depicting the perspective and proportions exactly as it is possible for me with the 50mm.
    Nevertheless, I take more photos with the Q2, precisely because I can start walking with the Q2 without hesitation, without thinking about the weather, I don't dare to do that with the M11 because I don't know whether the sensor on the M11 attracts dust particles.
    Nevertheless, I love 50mm (Summilux M 1:1.4/50 asph.), that's why I'm definitely keeping the M11, the photos are also colorful for me, the sharpness, the dynamics and in the dark (night) are simply more pleasant and beautiful to watch.
    But I love the color and sharpness of the Q2 also.

  • @weisserth
    @weisserth Рік тому

    I agree with everything you walked through here. Well, 99%.
    There is a little more to this actually: if your preferred focal length is 28mm AND you wear glasses, the only M that is remotely feasible to accommodate you is the M6 with the 0.58x viewfinder magnification. Or alternatively, the Minolta CLE with it's large, low magnification viewfinder. On my M10 or MP, I cannot fully see the 28mm frame lines when wearing glasses.
    Also, I do think that Leica killed the market for their 28mm Summicron and Summilux. Who spends that kind of money on these lenses when they can have that class of lens with a free camera attached to it? That offers a much better usage experience too? If Leica started making Q variants in other focal lengths, they'd be killing the M lens system...
    That being said, there is no viable alternative for a Leica M with the 35mm Summilux or 50mm Summilux. The Q cannot replace those combinations through use of its higher resolution and cropping in. The results that something like a 50mm Summilux renders are unique. The Leica M is optimized for 50mm and 35mm. Leica got it right with the M3 and M2. The M3 is still the best M for 50mm. If you shoot 50mm, there is only the M. SL? Too big. Q? Doesn't deliver the same experience.
    Regarding the meter: I enjoy the center weighted/spot meter experience on the M10. It's identical to what I have on the MP. My brain does not have to switch. I shoot slide film on the MP, I can nail the exposure on the M10. As long as you don't overexpose on the M10, you can pretty much recover a bad exposure from the shadows anyway.
    I am waiting for Leica to announce that rumored updated 50mm Summilux, hopefully with the same improvements they did on the 35mm Summilux (more aperture blades, closer focusing distance). I budgeted for that or the current Summilux. If I already had that Summilux, I would probably buy a Q2 and sell my 28mm f2.8.

    Thanks, that was fun to watch. I've never liked the look of a "flash" photograph, and, stubbornly, I haven't used one for many years. When you were discussing the advantages of using a flash you quickly went over my head. Is it simply a "rule" that wedding - and knowledgeable 'street' - photographers must use a flash to, say, eliminate facial shadows? My camera has a high ISO setting of 6400. I simply haven't seen the need to use a flash.

    The M has limitations, as does the Q. The M doesn't have close focus without messy adapters or expensive new lenses and live view. The Q has a macro mode that is designed perfectly. The OVF or rangefinder of the M is perfect unless you are using an M9 or lower number M, then low light focusing is practically impossible without putting a light source on a little window. The M has a 70 year history, so most everything has adaptation to use the camera for basically any use -- including TTL and SLR adapters. It's just, do you want to adapt? The Q, being a modern design based on the M with a fixed lens (like the Leica X system before it) is built with obsolescence in mind. You won't likely be able to use the Q2 in 60 years time,. The M8 from 2006 however still being used is showing its age. The M8 however still retains some of its original value, while if you look at the Q typ 116, it has just in a few years been reduced to a fraction of its price and with the battery life and non-weather sealed body, the Q2/Q2M are obviously better choices. At the end of the day, its all according to what kind of shooter you are. If you are buying a Leica, supposedly a luxury brand/Verlben goods, then you are expecting a certain retention of value and quality. Both systems are German-made Leica, with all of the bells and whistles. Get what you want and shoot!

    To each their own. For me the whole point of going Leica is to have a more or less manual optical rangefinder camera in a relative compact format close to what film SLRs used to be. The Q is a 28mm point and shoot just like so many others. I don’t get it. I’m sure it’s good at that but I wouldn’t know what to do with it.

  • @nuenn
    @nuenn Рік тому

    Hello Robin,
    thanks for the video, but I won‘t see the Q as a comparision to the M system. It‘s more an extension. I am on a world tour on a bicycle and got a Q2 and a M240 with me. With the M I shoot at 21mm and 50mm, everything else goes with the Q. The bokeh of the M lenses and the resulting popout is the reason for me, why I prefer the M system. Portraits are way better with the M System. Shutternoise, weight and missing autofocus haven‘t been an issue for me so far. I never used a flash on a Leica System, cause it‘s the opposite of the simplicity term.
