  • This article tells of some interesting and comical mistakes that were made by telegraph operators both sending and receiving messages. It talks about Morse Code and explains how some letters because of their similarities could be easily misconstrued. It tells of annoyances endured by the patrons of the wire service. It tells of struggles of inexperienced operators and thrilling scenes that resulted from mistakes. It offers a unique glimpse into the art of telegraphy that is nearly completely lost in the modern world. This story comes from the state of Massachusetts. It was originally reported in the Boston Sunday Globe of May 13th, 1888.

    It's hard to see how any worthwhile time could be saved by spaced characters, given the open door for confusion.
    Also, how did a receiving operator know that the sender was going to use spaced characters??
    Personally, I used to send numeric code msgs (OBS) using a sideswiper/Cootie key, which did save time.
