Simple Progression for Teaching Hang Gliding

  • This is a 5-min video FOR INSTRUCTORS that breaks an intro lesson into it's most basic parts, and stresses that teaching needs to be a progression of smaller steps, guided in accordance with the fundamentals of instruction.
We can not teach someone to launch if they struggle with picking up the glider, and we can't put them in the air until we've taught them how to land first.
The end goal is creating that 'Eureka' moment and hooking the student on hang gliding... and we do this by ensuring their first flights are a hugely positive and fun experience.
Regarding the technical content of this lesson, I understand different schools might follow a slightly different progression depending on the syllabus or training facilities available to them (such as teaching wheel landings to start out). This video is an example of A PROGRESSION, not "THE" progression (this is what has worked best for the Voights). The key is the WAY it's taught- progression, clear & simple cues, and with an emphasis on the things that bring people back. We as a whole can't afford to lose any potential pilots!
At face value this video provides new instructors with an excellent 'canned' intro lesson. Going deeper for more experienced instructors, the video stresses and demonstrates a lot of the complexities of instruction, be it an intro hang gliding lesson or anything else- taking something complex and delivering it in simple and straightforward, piece by piece steps.

This is without doubt the best way of teaching a student in my opinion and reminds me of the ground handling work I did when learning to paraglide.

I'm so glad to see you teaching on flat ground. My lesson (at Green Dragons) here in London outskirts was sprinting directly down a fairly steep hill, with the hang glider. And yes, by the way, I crashed. The instructor kept saying, stick out your chest, stick out your chest, while I'm shitting myself because I've never done this before, and I'm sprinting with this heavy thing down hill, top speed.
I accidentally pulled the hanglider towards me, rather than away, and I ploughed straight into the ground. I fucked up his expensive harness, almost broke my collar bone, and 2 years later, I'm still suffering a pain down the back of my thigh, because I tried to rescue his glider from slamming into the ground. I totally tore my ligaments and muscles in my right leg.
Now I'm a bit intimidated in ever trying this again.

Ouch! That was a terrible Learning experience to be sure. There are probably other schools with a better progression, as you saw in this video. Another alternative is to go to a flight park where you can fly tandem within an instructor. That way you got a feel for flying and how the glider behaves without having to take on the difficult task of launching. Good luck!

There are good instructors out there. It's best to find a reputable school that has been around for quite a while. Single-instructor 'schools' should be suspect unless they have a very good national reputation. There are only a handful of very good schools in the USA that could be recommended. Have no idea about schools in the UK or EU.

I taught two people to hang glide in the late 1980s. I sure wish I had this kind of instructional training at that time. It would have benefited my students greatly.
And certainly a tandem flight or so to introduce flying at many hundreds of feet AGL is of great benefit.

There was this kind of training then here in the flat land of platform towing . Finding a practice hill was always difficult for ground handling .. Transitioning to tandem tow launch was then easy as was landing . Finally learning to thermal and finding lift and LZ . Thanks for reminding to have FUN

Hi. Great video. I was just wondering what harnesses you were using on those videos. They look really well padded and comfortable for the standing/supine position. Is it the Charly Knee hangers (Finsterwalder) or some other type? I am really interested in purchasing one. Cheers and happy landings!

I am 81, took up HG at age 45, had an extremely poor teacher,. I flew HG for 15 yrs. and then switched to PG and at age 80 quit PG . Just like building a house the foundation is a key element to a proper project. In spite of not the best of instructors I only broke one arm while HG and that was from landing in a field with no wind sock and no other indicators of wind direction and a thermal kicking off on the last 20 ft of height burnoff.

About 5000 euros in Russia (~2000 for the glider, ~2000 for the harness and emergency chute and some extra money for smaller goodies like helmet, bags, radio, etc.). Other expenses are negligible, unless you pick some expensive service like towing with an aircraft.

@@bonefishboards I've kinda retired from teaching, but there is still a school in Ellenville. There's also a school in Middletown at Randal Airport where you could do a tandem flight and really get an idea what hang gliding is like. Careful because it's engrossing ;-)
The flying in Ellenville is best when the wind is from the NW 5-10 mph so that's when you're most likely to see people out there (year round!). At the end of the day we land in the field on Hang Glider Rd in Ellenville if you want to check it out.
