𝄞 It's difficult to use standard chord progressions without creating a sense of storytelling, even if the music is instrumental. Often times as music creators we don't want to take the listener on a dramatic ride but instead want to simply establish a vibe and stay there, with a little movement to keep things interesting. This is something that gives the music of artists like Kiefer, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Omari Jazz, DOMi & JD Beck a combination of exciting textural and production development without leaving the vibe of the initial harmonic area. In order to approach chord progressions in a new way, we'll step outside the major and minor scale and into the Dorian mode. Once we have some new approaches in mind, we'll build a lofi hiphop jazz beat out of two minor9 chords then develop them with chord voicings and rhythmic variations. Finally, we'll add guitar, bass, strings, and a funky lead melody. 𝄢

Tell me why I learned more about practical music theory in this 15 minute video than I did in all my high school and college music classes. Jalapeño kettle cooked.
Brother, you are wicked smart when it comes to music theory, and teaching it. Never stop!
Quite basic but ok

Literally one of the most incredible UA-cam music lessons I've ever seen! Please don't ever stop. Or I will find you. 🤣🤣👍✊
Thanks for the kind words and the motivation 😆
@@jaronlopez hi, can you make a video on my in the Key of A minor, the fifth has an F# when you make a 9th chord. Please Some say Emin flat 9. It's confusing me
He is wrong
C major
D mode 2
E mode 3
F mode 4
G mode 5
A minor
B mode 7
C major
They are all the same scale you just start on the next note as home/root note. It is called playing in key. 🎉

Incredible presentation by the way, so clear and concise - subscribed!
I've spent hours watching random UA-camrs try to simplify music theory concepts but it either ends up too limiting or too complicated. This video is a perfect balance of both and you've made it super easy to implement into production. You have mastered the youtube tutorial formula and I'm definitely subscribing
Same. Need more !!
This is seriously one of the best videos on modes I've seen. Your method and manner of of presentation is simple and effective. TY!

This is the best explanation of modes I’ve ever seen! Thank you for this 🤘🏽
This is outstanding. I have found that not enough tutorials focus on rhythmic concepts, so the fact that you included that here really makes this stand out. Please, more of this!
I love how you explained all this in such a sequential order, just taking the time to layer more and more techniques. This was very insightful, thank you for such a high quality video!
This might be the best music theory/production video I've seen on youtube. How the complexity of the progression is scaling through the video is amazing, really easy to learn even for begginers with only the basic concepts of music theory just like me. Also the final product sounds so professional that it gave me a lot of motivation to continue this music production journey I've started at 24, just when I thought I was maybe too old to start... Thanks Jaron
Your videos on chords and progressions and have helped me tremendously sir! Can’t thank you enough, keep making the awesome content!
Finally found what I’ve been looking for!! Thanks for sharing the wealth bro!
This is really nice stuff, dude. Love how the progression develops in the second half of the video. Very digestible but educational content :)
Best UA-cam video I’ve ever seen on production. Absolutely grateful man!❤
I literally LOVE YOU for clearing scales for us! 😩❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love the simplicity you described all this, more please.
No wonder the UA-cam algorithm shoved this in my face for a while now. Very well made, well explained, and well exemplified!
I too will say the inclusion of rhythmic playing concepts really took this up a notch. Well done!
Out of every video I’ve watched on modes as a guitar player I never thought a video about music production would be the one to break it down the best
Barbecue! Thank you for this video. I’ve definitely been putting off learning music theory 🙌🏾🙏🏾
Just here to say that I just discovered your channel and I’m binge watching all its content. You’re a top notch teacher. Thanks.
This is incredibly well explained. Thank you for taking your time to make this gem
The way you explain tonic movement through everyday terms is truly spectacular and rare. I hugely applaud your work, and am hype to see more!
This is what musicians need ,plz make more videos like this
Instant sub, love your efficient yet super clear tutorial, just amazing❤
My favourite thing about these videos is that you actually explained the upper extensions and the theory behind them with the modes. It's such a breath of fresh air from the "chord code" "place a note, go up by 2, 3, 1 *whatever*".
Like if you don't wanna learn theory and just want the sound then go off King, I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that learning theory gives you an appreciation for jt and a deeper level of understanding helps every instrument sound homogeneous cuz they all feed off the same material.
This is probably the most informative tutorial I've seen, I feel like it helps view music with the lens of a "real musician" as supposed to "someone who makes music". Amazing video, pls keep teaching like this
I finally understood this! Thanks a lot! This made my chord progression work much more fun and playful!
I’m trying to brush up on music theory to help with my production. This is honestly the most straightforward, relevant, and accessible explanation of some key concepts (eg modes) that I’ve come across. Thankyou! You’re a great teacher.
u just explained the modes in the most simplest way any one on physical earth cannot explain. i was confused in modes and u just clears the air for me. thanx.
you make music theory fun and easy, never stop these !!!
I’m so glad someone is making this information so easily accessible. Thanks man! Amazing job.
Perfect! Learning music theory and now I know why my music sounded so ‘popular’. Changing my jazzy break beat track from C minor to C Dorian 👍🏾
wow. one of the best explanations and breakdowns i've seen
I’m trying to dedicate more time to learning the piano more - I found the right channel today. You’re amazing man!
Amazing video, edit, clear charts and awesome sounds, thanks a lot. Inspiring and educating!

This was mesmerizing !!!!
Dude oh my god. This was easily the most helpful and most inspirational tutorial I’ve ever seen.
Thanks for explaining and demonstrating!
Yoooo so straight forward and so helpful for me rn. Subbed instantly
this is literally one of the best explanations of greek modes ever, and it is not even the main topic of the video. Great great stuff!
Modes are not scales, they are modes. Ways of arranging intervals starting from a note.
Oh brother when it started moving and you kept adding to the groove, that was so sick
This is the first time I understood the different between scale and mode. Thanks ❤
My dude! That was freaking awesome! Really appreciate this info! You Rock!
Thanks for doing this! Super clear throughout - the description of modes was especially valuable for me.
this is beyond amazing, keep up the good work
This is one of the best tutorials I have seen in years.
Awesome man! Loving the content.
This is some of the best info I have seen on such a subject. Applicable and simple to understand. Thanks very much

modes never made sense until you described them the way you did, thank you!!
15 Min lesson worth 3 months - or more - SOOOOOOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOOOL !!!
Man. You put things into a useful perspective
One of the best music theory tutorials i've seen ! keep it up
Damnnnnnnnnnn bro explained it better in 5 minutes than my music teacher could in two years
Definitely subscribing to your channel, your tutorials are so straightforward and so simplified
thanx...... fantastic i have never thought of it,
Men, this is so inspiring, thank you for creating this video!! All the best!
Love you explaining!
wtf this video is such a gem! Better than any other music theory videos I've watched in 2021. Please make videos about stepping outside typical chord progressions!!! Really love it and appreciate it!
Hard agree 😍
Fantastic lesson - so much to work with here, thank you!
Never really comment, but I have been looking for a music theory video like this. Not too simple where you're teaching me stuff like "three notes make a chord", "c major", and all that stuff, but not too advanced where you assume I know all the chord names and shiz. Also it's on stuff that actually sounds cool! Keep up the good work man!
super clear, thanks !!
dayum great stuff man!
abosultely phenomenal vid. great explanation of really useful information. thank you!
Brilliant breakdown!!
this connected modal jazz concepts that had NEVER clicked for me before, thank you!!!!
wow, and re-recording those midi tracks with live performance is genius
Im happy just listening to this.
Great stuff, Jaron!
I'm so glad I found your channel. I feel hopeful again that I can learn to play on my DAW if not my keyboard. I make all my own melodies so it's a must I continue learning music theory! Thank you
One of the best tutorial I watched! Thanks and wish you all the best

Love your approach to music theory! Definitely be back for more!
Great video!! More of there please!
Even though I have no idea how I'm gonna actually apply this on my own , this is the first time I've ever seen a music theory tutorial and felt like I understood what was going on. Thank you!
Liked and subbed, this video is great. Gonna use this alot, thankyou 🙏
Awesome music theory, man super cool video.❤
Thank you for that great lesson! So much useful information showed in interesting way!
