Hello Plano, TX I was stationed at Dyess AFB for 11yrs back in the late 90s. Texas is my second home. Great info on health safety with telescope observations!! Stay safe and stay healthy!! James
John, Great video, good advice. I have enjoyed several of your excellent videos. I am in Dallas, near White Rock Lake. I am a member of TAS and the APSIG (although I have not been to meetings lately). I recently got an e-mail from Frank C. where he suggested using ZOOM or a similar product to conduct the APSIG meetings. I really liked the idea. You seem to be pretty knowledgeable about the social media technology. Have you considered organizing a regular meeting for local astronomy enthusiast? Like you said in the video, it gets pretty depressing watching the virus numbers go up and the stock market numbers go down.
I have the same email from Frank :). APSIG is my local meeting at the moment, and I like the idea of doing it over Zoom for a while here too. I don’t want to compete with that group since I like the guys there so much. Let’s see how this zoom thing goes. Who knows, maybe there will be a permanent virtual meeting piece for that group.
Thanks for the video! I've been aching for the past 2 weeks to get out and observe with my 4" refractor but here in Israel latley it's been either rain or dust.. Hoping to observe Orion nebula and Betelgeuse before one sets under the horizon and the other potentially goes supernova..
1. Question: is there a site where I can grab photos and practice processing the images before utilizing my telescope? I hate to be wasting time figuring out the camera when I could be using it to explore the cosmos. 2. Question: I have an ABX mount as well for my Celestron 8”. Have you ever experienced problems with setup and polar alignment? Sometimes it seems to take forever to get it right. Thank you for any information you can provide. James
Hey James. There are definitely places to get raw images to process on your own. Search raw Astro images and the first few hits will show some places you can get practice files. As for the AVX mount, I had one for a while, and it’s setup isn’t too different from most equatorial mounts. I’d look for UA-cam videos on AVX setup to get a guide, and call a good dealer like OPT Telescopes or High Point Scientific to talk to someone live if you have questions.
Nice video, but you jinxed me! I was just looking on Astrobin and went to look at one of my own images, and I got the “catastrophic data corruption” message on all of them. Any idea what that’s all about? Regardless, I guess I have a new project....
Charlie Lemley the owner made some assumptions when we set up the site about backups that came back to bite him later basically. He has a post on the astrobin forums going through what happened, but it affected a lot of us.
Great video and I would like to apologize for the weather because I believe it might be my fault. I live in Carrollton and I just bought a Raza8, my first dedicated astrophotography camera, guide camera and enough accessories that could be the grounds for a divorce :) It looks like the new astro equipment curse has struck me and I feel you and other astrophotographers in the area are unwillingly being punished for my purchases, so I'd like to say from the bottom of my heart, I am sorry.

Wonderful message, Thank you!
I hope you can discuss Sharcap's Sensor Analysis and Smart Histogram on your future videos. Stay safe too.
Thanks for the video!

Stay safe. I have another question for you. Is there a process in Pixinsight that will get rid of large halos around stars? Thank you.

Lazy Astronomy: Thanks man!
