After grinding your onion, you might try passing the powder through a fine-meshed sieve.
If you have an excess of onions, don't grind them all into powder. Your dehydrated onions will keep their flavor longer if they stay un-ground and stored in a vacuum-sealed container. You can grind them later and they will maintain their flavor than if they have been ground.
You will most likely notice that your onion powder starts "caking". There are three ways to prevent this. First (and more difficult) is to re-dehydrate your onion powder. If you have an Excalibur dehydrator, you can purchase silicone sheets that allow you to dehydrate powders. This can be worth the effort.
The second way is to take your already-caked powder and pass it again through a fine-meshed sieve. Discard the sediment that doesn't pass through the sieve.
Finally, there are really cheap products that will remove humidity from containers. I think they're call gel-paks, Put one in the container that holds your powder.
Liked your video and I hope these few tips help.
Cheers.
My Wife & I make beef Jerky by hanging the strips of London Broil from a top rack, by untwisting paperclips so they form an "S" shape. They come out great with the oven set to it's lowest setting, over night. Yummy! Art in Calif
Jacob, you are such a nice and kind man.. a gentle giant.. a wonderful husband and friend. You and your wife are so lovely to watch as she is just as kind and beautiful. .. God put the two of you together to spread love and kindness into the world, I'm convinced.
I might would do garlic powder but I don’t eat onions. Couple of ideas for future. Mandolin slicer (or 2) for faster & thinner slicing. When you start grinding into powder, you can always put it thru a sifter after to catch any pieces not well ground up.
Wow that’s a lot of onion powder! Bet it’s definitely more potent and way better flavor than store bought.
😢😢. Can’t beat the smell of home cooking while preparing the onions though but smell does linger. When I first began gardening my own I signed up for a local AG class on how to preserve our harvest. Best thing I ever did. Dehydraters were very expensive back then so used oven at 250 all night. Worked great then ground up to powder with chunks and strained. Jars of powder and jars of flakes which worked good sprinkled on soups and chili’s. In class they said to place a saltine cracker in jar to absorb any moisture and longer shelf life. They said 2-3 years and YEP they’ve been right tho do lose some potency. Very little actually. Always kept old jars of spices and filled them for Xmas gifts of baskets I’d make each year. Loved spreading the wealth of our harvest and finding an old antique cooking utensil to include. Or napkins and towels. I also would do the same with my chili peppers as with onions and all I can say is WOW. Those onion pieces slightly crunched up makes a great French Onion Soup too. Sharing the garden from start to finish and valuable recipes is perfect cuz your presentation is always spot on. Love your channel and all the work you do for your land and animals. Your heart is in all you do and it really shows. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Bonnie Wooters thank you so much! 😊
You can buy oxygen absorbers to put in your dried goods too.
Just a note...when trying to get an odor off your hands, wet hands & put some dish washing liquid or soap on hands, then rub them on the metal sink or on the water faucet to get the sulphuric smell off. Works like a charm! God bless!
We made homemade garlic powder and we LOVE IT, and use it ALL the time. And yes, it is much stronger and better than store bought, and I promise it's worth the effort! TFS
Front Porch Ponds- When I was prep cook I learnt a tip from our lead cook to get the onion smell off your hands: wet your hands put a very small amount of dawn dish soap in the palm of your hand and then some salt it is kinda gritty : and then wash your hands and throughly rise 🧅 🌻 May God continue to bless you and your household every thing you put your hearts & hands upon may you prosper and give God the glory. keep having fun being you never change thank you🌻🌻🌻🌻
Amen💞🎈
Darlene Preston thank you! 😊
You guys are great. A fantastic young couple. Your channel has taken off, and your on your way for a wonderful life. Jacob, its amazing how you've taking up cooking and stuff in the kitchen, and Alex is doing the vedio. LOL. And a great job also handling the photo shots. Who's doing the editing? LOL. I knew the first vedio that you made in the rocking chairs. You guys were going to be stars on UA-cam. 🌟 For Holloween, if you both dress up, I can see you as Gladiators and Warriors. LOL. G-D Bless and Stay Safe.
Wow that was easier than thought I it would be, and it made more powder than I thought it would 👍
Thank you for the instructions 👊
I'm really impressed that y'all weren't a teary mess 😃
Auntie Ann oh, I was!! 😄😳
I bought one of those dehydrators last January, but haven’t used it yet. Thanks for teaching how to use it with onions. You two are amazing.
Wilma Faye thank you! That dehydrator works great!! We use it a lot for jerky also.
Great tip about paper
Also do it OUTSIDE.
They do fill the house with onion aroma...
HI. YOU KNOW WHEN YOU WERE PUTTING THE ONIONS ON THE TRAYS AND SOME KEPT FALLING IN THE HOLE, TAKE A SHORT GLASS OR CUP AND TURN UPSIDE DOWN OVER THE HOLE BEFORE YOU START PUTTING ON THE ONIONS. THIS WILL HELP. I ENJOYED YOUR VIDEO.
i made dehydrated onions one year in the house and my whole house and clothed smelled like them , so now i do them in the garage
I put the dehydrator in my office when I did mine last year, the office STILL smells like onions haha.
Very interesting ! Had no idea that could be done .
Great thing to do! The parchment paper you need to poke holes in (with a fork) so the heat can circulate through-also its there so the onions when they shrink through the drying process wont fall through the trays and end up all in the bottom and possibly clog up the fan (most dehydrator fan and motors are in the bottom of the unit) there is no smell sticking on the trays since you are not useing high temps to "melt" the flavor into the plastic. Just use a mild soap and a shot of bleach when cleaning afterwards, rinse well and it be as good as new :) Not trying to be a smarty pants lol just well ment advise :) I love what yall doing! Another tip-if you fill your trays, put a jelly jar upside down over the hole in the middle to stop anything from falling in there-makes filling the trays much easier :) - Blessings...
It's because you stack the onions... If you cut them smaller and/or spread them out, they will dry much faster
Thank you for sharing! 'Noticed your moving cutting board. I use the thick rubbery shelf liner (cut to size), to stop the skidding around. Bottled lemon juice will get the smell off your hands, cutting board, etc. (Just rinse well.) A LOT of the comments have good ideas! God Bless!
Thank you I’m going to hydrate it in the oven
Yay.. new video =)
I love onions..that's a great tip with the parchment paper. Nice, look at all that onion powder.. Have a great week and God bless.
Thank you.will be making onion powder..have planted 100 onions this year😎
Tip my mum thought me put a mason jar over the hole in the trays when filling trays so nothing falls down
Enjoyed the video. Jacob you showed and explained everything very well. Good team work. Could you leave some dried onion as chips and store them in jars for green bean casserole, soups and with meats?
Janet Barker definitely! 👍
Love learning in the Sawyers kitchen. I really enjoyed this video class today. God bless and stay safe 🙏❤
Jennifer Aiken thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Smh! I was into the video and when I saw the dust from the powder coming out when you took the lid off,I blew my dadgum screen! I may or may not need a nap lol.
😆 I thought I smelled onions when he was cutting them 😳😜🤣😂🤣
Haha! It was so potent in the kitchen that day. I (Alex) was crying all over the place. 😄
Sawyer Ridge Farm lol! I bet y’all were. Cutting just one onion smells up the house and will have the tears flowing,I can’t imagine cutting 20 lol. I did wonder how y’all were dealing with tears as I watched the video, now I know lol.
This Granny just loves watching you kids. Have a blessed day. Sending you kids prayers and love.
Thank you Deborah! 😊
Loved this video. I planted onions for the first time ever after watching your video. I got a great harvest. Next year I plan to expand the garden. I will be planning to make the powder for sure! Thanks guys love your videos. Keep Jason on his toes also!
Jennifer Ward that’s so awesome!! 😁👍
Thank you for the video...God bless you!
Awesome ! I always love learning from you two. You sure started out with nice onions ! Bless you both!
Hi guys, I like using the coffee grinder to. I now have three grinders one for the onions and garlic one for peppers and one for coffee. I was using food processor for it but that broke and I didn't want to go to the expense of buying a new one so the coffee grinders have been working great and at twenty bucks who can beat it. After I use the grinder I clean it with dried bread and grind it up in there and I have seasoned bread crumbs. I just put it all together it's onion, garlic and pepper flavored it makes a great coating for fried foods.
I haven't done onion powder in a while but I do Garlic the same way. Something that I learned is if it doesn't grind as fine as you like, put less in whatever you are going to use to grind with or sift it thru a fine strainer and regrind the larger stuff. Good job the flavor is so much better. God bless.
Sounds yummy. Nothing like the smell of cooked onions when I walk in the house after being outside. Looking forward to giving this a try. Thank you for sharing. ❤️
Looks so good!
Thanks for sharing.
Take care.
Patricia
Great video! I am sure you could do garlic that way too. I would like to see a video on how Alexis tied her peppers together.
An oven will do a good job of substituting for a dehydrator, BUT...it is very, very un-economical AND it heats up the house. An oven, either gas or electric, uses WAY more energy (4-5 times more) to do an equal amount of product as a dehydrator. I used an oven for ONE year making jerky and then bought an Excalibur Dehydrator...its a world of difference.
Y'all have a blessed day.
I shared this video with my friend she loves learning stuff like this and we are going to do it together and now she is going to become a SUBSCRIBER 💜 yay thank you
That is awesome Kelly! Thank you so much! 😊
Never thought about making your own onion powder, so healthy!
I did garlic, onions and mushrooms like that this year. My son ended up taking about half of what I made home and has asked me when I was going to make more, he absolutely loves the home made versus the nasty store bought, it's so much stronger than store bought.
After you dehydrate your onions, before you. Crush them for powder, Save Some for 'French Fried Onions', like what is used on some casseroles, like Greenbean casserole, and instead of croutons on salads you just top them with the Dehydrated ones if you do or don't have fresh onions. Good Luck and let me know what you think.....Love🙏🏻🙏🏻❤❤🇺🇲
Yes, I like the idea if doing that way to have fresh onion powder without added chemicals.
God Bless u both, such a sweet couple. Thanks for showing us how to make it. I'm going to try that.
Thank you! Great video full of info 👍😁👍 God bless
One suggestion: put a small jar or glass upside down over the center hole to keep the food from falling in it while loading up the trays. I have lots of onions to preserve and I am going to try making onion powder tomorrow! This was a great find. Thanks!
If y’all have a food saver they make an attachment for mason jars, regular and a wide mouth one so you can get all the air out of your jars. They are around $9.99 at food savers website, Walmart, and amazon. That’s the cheapest option because you can reuse it over and over or you can buy oxygen absorbers of course you can only use those once. Hope that helps!
Great job Guys! I think the word you were looking for was "Concentrated"? When cooking use less as it's very Concentrated.
I've heard that using a food grade moisture absorber, like one would use for survival food, will help keep it from clumping together. Same idea as putting rice in your salt shaker. You guys always show the best things!
Thank you Jayne
I re use the little moisture absorbers that come in my vitamins and supplements. Great to put in with onion or garlic powder and also works well if you save your own seeds.
Yes you had a wonderful onion harvest ty for this video now I can do it very helpful 🥰💐🌹
Thanks guys, excellent video. Very educational. Bless y'all and stay safe and healthy 🇺🇸✌️
👍 cool! I learned something new today. 🤗 Have a great day folks.
Thank You!
As always great instructional video. Thank you!😍🇺🇸💙
That looks easy enough. Great idea! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Sawyer Ridge for sharing your experience and taking us along. Blessings...👆🙏🇺🇸💪👉...
I don’t know if any gave this tip yet. Pour your powder through a mesh strainer. It will get the bigger pieces out and you can do it again.
I like your educational videos of things other homesteads aren't doing. :)
Thank you! I’m glad you are enjoying.
I use the ends and skins < washed very well > let dry then place in freezer bags. Even the end of the onions < green parts > I did 3.5 bags stuffed full. To make some onion stalk ~ awesome. I have a dehydrator big round one this is so awesome < why I never thought of this yrs. ago lol > I can't wait to try this. Stay safe & take care of you all. Thanks for sharing eh :)) ** YT is not giving me notifications on a lot of my YT channels ** Slowly catching up.
Just a little tip....Make a small loose cheese cloth pouch with rice and place in the jar. This helps to keep the powder from caking up. I also use “Press and Seal “ over the jar opening before screwing on the lid. I do this with all my spices and dried rubs that I make.
That’s a great tip! Thank you!
Awesome video Jacob. And an awesome idea of making our own onion powder. I have no place to grow onions here, but, onions are not that expensive. I need to get some and do this, as our family cooks with onion powder in almost everything. I am going to invest in one of those coffee grinders to. God Bless You and Alex.
CHEAP AND EASY VACUUM SEALING! Heidi at Rain Country (you tube channel) has a video showing how to vacuum seal using a food saver jar sealer and a brake bleeder... I have been using this method for almost 3 years now and IT WORKS! Will definately extend the shelf life.
Another reason I use the parchment paper is to keep the small pieces of onion from falling through the rack as they dry and get even smaller. I like the smell! LOL
Thanks for the information! Pure vitamin C!
Thank you very informative! I watched another channel do garlic. Thanks!😄😄 I loved how you and Alex work together!❤❤
This is a good idea for my daughter and me once we get started on our homestead.
Great video... thanks for sharing 👍. Hopefully in a few months I will be able to purchase a shirt. God bless and have a wonderful day 😁💗
I assume you do about the same thing for garlic powder? Found it quite interesting. Love to all!
Yes just peel garlic then put them in a blender then paste it on the dehydrator
WOW. Well done on the instructional onion powder video.
Andrea over at Vw farm fam dehydrated some peppers the other day in her oven and used the same grinder.
I Love!!!Love!!!Love!!! Onions!!😋😋
Sorry one more thing 125 degree for 1 or 2 hour in the oven and when you put it up put in in a dark cool place will help save it even longer we use to add rice and we change the rice ever few months
That’s a great idea with the rice. Thanks!
I enjoy every video. I love onion powder. Very cool making your own. Blessings Jacob & Alex.
I'm anxious to make my own onion powder now that I know how. Oh, I like your T-shirt. So true.
Now thats what i need to start doing
I'M GONNA TRY THIS.....THANKS
Thanks so much, my onions are just getting done in the garden.. new homestedfer so I really appreciate..
Nice how to video 👍 home made thousand times better tasting...
Have a good evening 🌻🌻🌻
Great work, I can see adding seasoning to the onions for extra flavor. 😋
Always enjoy seeing you make different things!😀
now you need to try to do tomato powder its good for sauce and soups or any recipe you all come up with much love and peace to you both.
Y'all like me as much as Jason.😁 Y'all know I LOVE these How To Video's! 😁 And I love onions! Y'all are the best! GOD BLESS YOU BOTH! 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤❤💙🇺🇲🇺🇲🐶🐐🐓🐰🐇🌶⛵⚓
That is awesome! Home grown is always best!
Thanks Jacob and Alex. Very good instructions.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Love watching and learning from you both
I blanch my onions for a couple of minutes then I put a small glass in the middle then load my onions. I dehydrate outside lessons learned.
Loved this guys. So much nicer to have homemade than store bought. We have the same counter as you all LOL. We love that you all put JESUS first in your life. . We have been a long time subscriber and watcher but usually dont comment much. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you simple life for commenting much appreciated. Yes Jesus is first.
Thank you, this was so informative. I had a total DUH moment where I realized -yep you can powder your own onion....seriously duh. Anyway, thanks again. -many blessings ~Mary & fam in NJ
Love your videos❣️❣️❣️ What brand dehydrator do you have ? Can you recommend one or two to me? I don’t want to do a lot of dehydrating but a few vegetables would be nice to have in my pantry. Thank you.
Great job Alex and Jacob as always. Onion powder looks good.
Thank you!
I do this with my trimmed onion stems....works great 👍
Thank you for sharing your onion powder.🌰
Love your videos. Your instructional ones are done in a way that is so easy to follow. Thank you for the time and care you put into your videos.
Thx Jacob very informative never have seen this done . You guys teach us something always . Love your channel . Love and Gods blessings to you bot💕🙏💕
That was so informative. Thank you for sharing it with us.❤️😀🇦🇺
Very interesting and very informative.
Maybe you can use a food saver bag and freeze the onion powder to preserve longer.
Team work you two are awesome!!!
Such a neat project. How fun. I will have to try this some day.
Thank you for this blog...as I was watching and learning..it came to mind. That the crispy onions could be kept crispy and used for green bean casserole. And some mixed with homemade croutons for salads. ..and of course onion powder. ..thanks for the great idea's on dehydrating. ..
Most definitely you can do that.
Ty that’s great🌻
How do you keep the powder from clumping? I made quite a bit for gifts to family. I have little glass jars/shakers I plan to put it in for everyone. Would a few pieces of raw rice help with that? Or is there a process or natural additive to add to the powder to keep it from clumping? Also, should it be kept in the refrigerator or on the shelf ok? Thanks for the video and advice!
Such an awesome idea for onions!!!!
Awesome not a tear shed. I think powder and separate flakes would be good. Keep up the informative videos love em ❤
