    This was by far my favourite game as a teenager on the C64. Wow those days...my mates would be around and we'd all try and complete the game but the furthest we got was level 12 without finishing it. Great music too. I've waited for this upload for years. Thank you!

    Das Beste Spiel für den C64.Ich glaube die haben den Letzte mögliche aus dem C64 herausgeholt und die Musik ist der Hammer, vor allen in den 1 Level da fühlt man sich mittendrin gleich von Anfang an.

    Amazing what you can do with a 8-bit machine that only has 64K and a 16-color palette. Throw in some excellent hardware sprite control, and a sound chip that was ahead of its time, and you've got one mighty little computer.

    I think... this was the best shoot 'em up of them all and i played a lot of the on a lot of systems - from Phoenix to Raptor. R-Type was a big hit in coin-op arcade and Irem wanted to port it to home computers which lived trough a major boom with the C64 at that time. So Mr. Trenz got the job for porting it to C64 and he did it masterfully. He wanted to do a sequel but Irem wasn't up to it (because they wanted from the arcade systems to home systems, so R-Type2 had to be made for arcade before the go). So he made this game, then known as 'Denaris' and it really runs circles around R-Type (and anything else). But Irem didn't like it. It was too close to their R-Type franchise so they shot it down. It was re-branded as Katakis and was sold for a while for C64, but as the time for conversion to the Amiga computer came they had not ported it but basically made a totally other game (which was done by Factor 5). The game isn't bad but its nowhere near the C64 or even R-Type league. Later Trenz broke from pure shoot'em ups, him also being involved earlier in the making of the Great Giana Sisters (basically a not too-subtle Mario clone) he decided finally to make something truly unique by blending both generes together by producing Turrican 1+2 (again ported to the Amiga by Factor 5), resulting in a huge commercial success. MT was probably the most influential game creator on the C64.

    • @Arkanoid1212
      @Arkanoid1212 9 років тому +1

      Waschlaff Duschmann I played shoot 'em ups on con-ops, consoles, home computers and into the early PC era where it basically died, Raptor being practically the last full-release title, getting replaced by FPS titles (Doom, Wolfenstein, etc) and space sims (Wing Commander). I miss those days and those games. Here and there somebody tries to reanimate this genere again, but there is nothing with really dedicated effort.
      R-Type is pretty impressive, especially with its giant space ship (level 3, i think) and does a lot of things quite well. It can't however keep up with the music and pacing. At times R-Type is too hard. You notice its an arcade port and has unfair sections meant do cut your purse.
      Enforcer is simply too short.
      X-Out is optically impressive (Amiga especially) and has a neat style due its underwater themed setting, shopping menue, but can't keep up with pacing and level design. Music is nearly as good but not quite on the level. Most of it is slower paced, nicely complementing the scenery. Its mood is different and slower.
      Hybris had a quite interesting power up system and is quite unique with its gameplay, also being a top-down scroller. Its music is also pretty rad, but as level design goes its pretty repetitive. Definetly one of the top notch shoot 'em ups, but not quite Katakis-class.
      Battles Squadron (as a Hybris sequel) introduced simultaneous multi-play, which was, hands down, quite brilliant, but also the repetitive level design (and in this case truly repeating) lets down an otherwise excellent game.
      Z-Out has gorgeous optics, simultaneous multiplayer but is too unfair in its level design. Also its music, whilst certainly good, is not that memorable.
      Project X (basically an Amiga Nemesis clone) is pretty much on par and has an interesting special weapons mechanic (ripped from Nemesis, which itself is a Darius clone). It also offers (like X-Out) the selection of different ships, has a pretty decent level design but the music... well its a matter of taste i guess. Its also not that well paced, but the bosses are quite well done (and superior to those in Katakis).
      Silkworm did good with simultaneous co-op in different vehicles, but can't score with level design (partly due game mechanics: the jeep had to drive) and music.
      SWIV improved on that (top down scroller), but still can't score with level design (a problem all top down scrollers share) and the music (except title music, which is pretty rad) is so-so. Top-down shooters are much better if they allow free-directional flight (like Parallax) which makes simultaneous gameplay a bit difficult, they are pretty rad player vs player with spilt screen (as Amiga Firepower for example)
      Turrican 1+2 are of course vastly more complex titles, but they are not exactly pure shoot 'em ups, but a plattformer crossbreed.
      Alien Breed was particularly good, but also not really a pure shoot 'em up but rather combined with a partly time-limited maze mechanic. It is a nice game an the alien setting works especially rad, but i do not like time limits, it has to be said, especially if running through a unexplored maze full of monsters. Yes, that brings a certain level of immersion with it, alright. I still prefer Konami's coin-op aliens.
      Chaos Engine, which is another really great game. Its pretty decent and especially interesting because it offers simultaneous 2 player action. There are some scrolling issues, because both players fight on the same screen but level design is superb and music is good. You can select from a wide range of characters (much like Gauntlet). Its not a shoot 'em up in the classical sense, so its not really the right genere to compare to.
      Same goes for Outzone (Coin-op Commando clone), which is also a superb game in its own right, with a very memorable soundtrack, but controls are an issue.
      Raptor did aim for top down scrolling and mouse control, which was a pretty rad thing. Unfortunately everything else was not up to standards. Not bad but not really good either. They probably just wanted to see how a mouse-control version would work commercially.
      This one is definitely the best one in my opinion and you have to get the C64 version, not the Amiga version. It is not that easy as it looks from the boss fights, you have been warned. And it is a long game. Its a better R-Type. What more can you ask? Irem did realize that. They should have ported it to arcade instead of shooting it down. If you want something that improves on this then go and play Amiga T2 then. There isn't really anything better than T2. Unfortunately MT's wizardry waned with the demise of the C64 as did Factor 5's with the wane of the Amiga. Nothing ever quite filled that gap.

      +Nemesis the warlock A couple of corrections to your nearly year old post...sorry I cant help myself. Darius was after Nemesis (AKA Gradius) so no, Nemesis is not a copy of Darius. Katakis was before Denaris, Katakis is the pulled/rare/too similar to R-Type version, Denaris is the common freely released one with minor changes made. No?

    • @Arkanoid1212
      @Arkanoid1212 8 років тому +1

      Gradius, not Darius - my mistake. The C64 Nemesis was a Gradius arcade clone, not Darius, my memory is playing tricks on me.
      Katakis/Denaris (same thing 88/89 release) C64 is the pulled version, yes. Its what they did after they ported R-Type to the C-64. You'll notice that the Amiga Katakis is a very different game, Factor 5 did that one. Its not bad but certainly not on the height there with its C64 heritage. Factor 5 Amiga version ist the common freely aviable one (from their website).
      By all means, help yourself :)
      Nice notification feature there, UA-cam.

  • @littlecarnage
    @littlecarnage 11 років тому +2

    Actually it was an R-Type ripoff! IREM set together with the Katakis-Team and told them they wouldn't sue them if they did an R-Type port for C64 for free! So the R-Type port came, and everything was settled. Good old times, where you could simply talk things out like gentlement ;-)
    Best of all: to finance the R-Type port, Manfred Trentz invented Turrican, which became a classic of its own!

    Wikipedia seems clear things up...
    "Activision objected to the similar style of Katakis to their side-scroller arcade game, R-Type. This was compounded by the contract Factor 5 had with Activision to perform the Amiga port of the game. Factor 5 modified the gameplay and level layout slightly and re-released Katakis as Denaris in 1989."

    Katakis/ Denaris is one of the best. Great bosses, great music, great levels, lots of sprites. It is a programming miracle. ..
    That blue spacecraft though sucks big time! Ugly as hell.
    Delta's or Sanxion's or even R-type's spacecrafts are more good looking for sure.
    IMO, Armalyte is the best vertical shooter out there. Darker but more polished, more organic with more emphasis on the details. Enemy ships look more round, more 3D, they have better design, better paths and appearance. Has super-weapons. Armalyte looks more pro and it is harder to beat. Too bad Armalyte-II never came out.

    Chris Hülsbeck also screwed The Delta Force theme for Area 5 and repeated in Area 12.
    How ironic that the same peeps responsible for the C64 port of Irem's seminal classic was pretty shit.
    Whatever, those graphics were incredible and the co-op play of controlling the force and the other piloting the craft is still extremely novel.

    Biep biep biep bei den ganzen Projektilen, das hört man nur drei Sekunden und ist wieder in den 80ern. Heute sehe ich gerade zu Anfang im Video aber eher umherfliegende Hakenkreuze, naja, Schwamm drüber.
