Up until the 2003 series, it sounded like the really tried to keep Raph's voice as close to the original as possible. Then they started giving him that deep kinda voice, which I honestly prefer for Raphael ;)

I've met Greg Abbey. He came to my school before when I was 10. I recognised him right away by his voice. He was there to talk about the harm bullying can cause. I asked him if he was Raphael. He laughed and confirmed it. He gave me a note that said "Keep cool sister- Raphael." Best day ever.

Josh Pais NAILED this one. That accent just took him to a whole other level, and gave Raph a sort of streetwise edge to him.

1. Nolan North 3:41 - He's full of angst and rage in the movie, but his voice really suits him well.
2. Greg Abbey 3:04 - Love his tough guy voice!
3. Sean Astin 4:23 - Captures Raph's 'teenager' side perfectly!
4. Alan Ritchson 5:26 - More mature and sounds more rugged, giving off the tough guy impression perfectly.
Sean Astin would probably be my favorite if he did a slight New Yorker accent. But ur list is the same as mine.

Sean Astin, 2012 Raphael, was my favourite. His voice sounded like a real 15 yr old teenager the most; he was angry, moody but also caring and loving towards his brothers and Astin managed to capture all that. His voice acting was also phenomenal, especially during the scene after Shredder through Splinter down the drain (The Invasion Pt. 2)
I fully agree. Sean did an amazing job conveying the youth and angst of being 15. I'd love to hear him voice Raph again.

I just love Raphael with a Brooklyn accent. It helps him stand out from Mikey's surfer voice Donnie's Geeky voice and Leo's commanding voice. And that's why John Pais Raph voice is perfect.
Favs (in no given order):
Rob Paulsen - Love the VA in general, and while not nearly as hot-headed, has his own unique portrayal of the character (though I still prefer him as the 2012 Donnie)
Greg Abbey (sometimes credited as Frank Frankson on the show) - Hot-Headed, sarcastic, cynical, funny, and kicked ass. Also, that Brooklyn accent ^^

Greg Abbey and Nolan North are pretty much on par with each other in potraying Rapheal as the short tempered muscle. Sean Astin's not too far behind.
Rob Paulsen's good for the sarcastic moments, but Raph wasn't who he should be in the 80's.
And Matt Hill really tried his hardest to capture Raph's attitude problem, but it's just not working like it should. It's too bad "Next Mutation" was in 97, or they probably could've cast Matt Hill for Mike and he would've worked perfectly. As it is, he's probably the weakest.

@ BladeBlur I agree Nolan North was a great Raphael, would have loved to have him voice Raph in a second CGI animated movie(which sadly never happened, but that is another story for another day). Still it was fun to hear him in the TMNT (2007) tie in video game, and I am glad that I got his autograph since he is one of my favorite voice over actors working today.

Greg Abbey had the best representation of Raphael. He got his anger down pact and he gave him that deep Brooklyn Accent considering they're from New York. Only person who comes close to him is Josh Pais.

Sean is better role in Raph more of heart then anger he's great when he's ready to fight.
I love Paulson as Raph, but he was never playing the real Raph. They had to tone down his character to just be kinda of a sarcastic ass instead of a Turtle with a short fuse. Paulson is actually better as the current Donatello on the Nick series. For me its Pais, North and Austin.

grew up on the 2003 turtles so I should be inclined to say that's the best Raph, but I honestly think the actor who gives Raphael the most heart and relatability is definitely Sean Astin. That man really makes this character seem real.

Rob Paulsen WAS 2012 Donatello in addition to playing the original cartoon incarnation of Raphael. In fact, when Rob Paulsen first came in to the studio to do the lines for Donatello, Sean Astin (Raphael) and Jason Biggs (Leonardo) were practically bowing down to him, having learned they were working with the original Raphael (Which says a lot, given that both Astin and Biggs are both successful movie stars).
As far as Rob Paulsen's voice being "out of character", well, Raphael was a very different character back then. In the original comics, the Turtles' personalities weren't terribly different. It was the original cartoon that first tried to differentiate the Turtles a bit more by exaggerating their personalities. For this cartoon, Raphael and Michelangelo were both jokers, but Raphael was more of the sarcastic, quick-witted type, whereas Michelangelo was more of a happy-go-lucky goofball. When the first movie came around, the writers decided that Raphael and Michelangelo were still a bit too similar, and turned Raphael into a hothead. This movie was the first instance of the angry, Wolverine-esque Raphael, and that version of him has stuck ever since. The original cartoon incarnation of Raphael was less like Wolverine and more like... well, Chandler from Friends. And Rob Paulsen found the perfect voice to go with that personality. He may not be Wolverine, but Rob Paulsen is the best at what he does.
TheHeroesOfCRASH I got to admit, when I first heard Rob Paulsen was going to voice 2012 Donnie, I was pretty shocked...for about 30 seconds. While I loved 80s Raph, he didn't have a whole lot of character aside from being the smart aleck of the group. Since we've had so many iterations of "tough, moody Raph" since the 1990 movie and beyond, that seems to be the version people prefer (myself included). Mr. Paulsen has voiced bad ass characters before (Vinnie from "Biker Mice"), but he's done plenty of nerds, so Donnie was a shoe-in. Plus, this way I get the best of both worlds. When I was a kid, I always loved both Donnie and Raph equally, but I loved Donnie more for his character and Raph for his jokes/voice acting. Having Paulsen voice this Donnie and my favorite hobbit voicing Raph just makes me so giddy! (And Sean Astin does a GREAT job! Just watch "Cockroach Terminator" to see why!)

I wish Rob Paulsen had still voiced as the 1987 version of Raphael again also for the 2009 animated TV movie "Turtles Forever" instead of Sebastian Arcelus 4:05 who had filled in for Rob Paulson, And I also wish Laurie Faso 1:46 who was the voice of Raphael for the 1991 second live action movie had voiced as Raphael also for the 1990 first live action movie instead of Josh Pais 1:29 and also for the 1993 third live action movie instead of Tim Kelleher 2:20, Because I like Laurie Faso as Raphael's voice better than Josh Pais and Tim Kelleher, And I also wish Matt Hill who was the voice of Raphael for The Next Mutation 1997-1998 live action TV series had still voiced as The Next Mutation version of Raphael for the crossover episode "Shell Shocked" of Power Rangers In Space (1998) too instead of whoever filled in for Matt Hill, And I also wish they had found someone else who sound simular to Sean Astin to voice as Raphael for the Out Of The Shadows 2013 game that was based on the 2012/current TV series instead of Carlos Alazraqui 5:04 and to voice as Raphael for the 2014 movie too instead of Alan Ritchson 5:26. Josh pais & Laurie faso will always be my favorite voice actors for Rafael. I love the 80's ones too but 1990 from the first movie. Always will love those voices for him, that's who they should have cast for doing the voice man in the new digital turtles. The voice for them suck, but yeah didn't even like how the new turtles looked they looked so weird and ugly.
