- We are finally getting the new slates on. 😁 After assessing the possibility of reusing the originals we decided to order a new premium grade Spanish slate fitting with a combination of copper nails and marine grade stainless hooks.

Get a couple of old pillows under the ladder you have on the roof, if you end up breaking a slate or 2 with them double nailed & clipped it will be a nightmare to replace them.
Yes plus stops any scratches onto the slates, I use gloves on the top of mine as if I bring a pillow up I’d be tempted to go for a nap 😴
I totally agree with most of the comments here. Your work is probably a lot better than most roofers. The attention to detail and also the prep work is outstanding. I still say you are insane. But I really admire you for doing it yourself.
I need to say this.: I did my own DIY slate roof a few months back. With the £1000's being saved by doing it yourself, don't scrimp on copper nails and double nail and hook EVERY slate. It will be totally bomb proof then and you will sleep soundly through the strongest winds.
This is the most well prepared cared for roof I’ve ever seen.
Great job and for all you diy people when you hammer the slate hook into the wood hold the hook end down tight has you hammer it home. It keeps the tension to bring the slate down flat to the roof line😊

The hooks are OK but I prefer not to use them the reason is when a slate is nailed if it breaks it will fall down the roof and you can see it, with the hooks it doesn't drop down so you never know it's broken
So, at the end of the day when you climb down the scaff' for the last time and look up at the roof do you think " ...shit man I did that..."

Great job which will be done better than many professional roofs. When it’s yours u will take u time and do it right. Hard work in the cold and wet
That's a roof that will last a hundred years (at least, probably more). My modest Victorian house roof lasted 160yrs with the original Welsh slate, I've just redone it myself, a couple of years ago but with Eternits because of cost. Your Spanish slate will be easily good enough. I do this for a living. A: The guys doing the battening have done it just right. B: Your slating is great, quality job. C: On an old roof, trying to get all the runs lined up is tricky - you've done a good job. Sleep well at night, under your super watertight new roof.
Tim did the battening and felt himself. I'm sure he will be pleased that a pro thought it such a good job.

Very neat tidy job but you have lost your minimum headlap at eave course by nailing eave slate to batten below first full slate batten

Unreal, it’s a credit to you.
To get your bottom course of slates (eave course) did you cut a slate in half and use both halves (making 250mm in length)? - Should be up to the hole on the slate so assuming these slate are holed to a normal headlap (holed at 300mm) would make the eave slate 295mm . SO maybe lost around 40mm of headlap. Hopefully you have not slated other side of roof and you can correct this error on that side.

Got to give it too you im a roofer myself and have been taught traditionally and every roofer still gets confused with velux windows all depends where they land on the roof. Great job mate. If you do another one I would suggest perpendicular lines down the roof just makes it easier. 10 inch and a 8th under 5 for 50 x 25 Spanish. Cracking job

I'm in a very similar boat, planning to do my own slate roof later this summer. What pitch is your roof? Mine is 10-12 (10 inches vertical for 12 inches horizontal), I'm wondering if I'll be able to get by walking up and down the battens or if I'll need to rely on ladders more.

Fair play for using the hooks, i hate hooks and ive been roofing for years 😂. I wouldn't have left them thin bits of slate out around your windows though, ive known them things to leak over smaller gaps than that. I would've been shot if i did that as an apprentice 😂. Overall it looks like a good job , should be pleased with yourself.
You should of gotten lighter slate tiles and write on the roof with tiles restoration couple! Fantastic job as always!

I’ve seen shingles with holes 1/4 inch up from leading edge pre drilled for that hanger. Rather than on edge. Its biting a hole
Interesting, I have used thousands of slate hooks. There is now a battery operated hook nailer with top loading. never though I'd see that!! Rubber slates with hooks is this the future? One man nails the hook, another places the slate while another passes a slate to him. Incredibly fast.
How do they prevent the slates from cracking when making those holes? Do the slates come pre-drilled/holed, or do you hole each of them individually? I never understood that part.

Love watching your videos- couple of questions: is that a broken claw hammer or a specialist slate hammer? Also, did I see that right... you were cutting slate with a pair of snips/scissors type cutter??? Never ever seen that before!

Slate cutters yep. The hammer is a roofing hammer so you can use it for put holes in. 👍

Hello, Can you tell me why you strips of wood that you nail your slate to? Can you nail directly to the flat surface without using strips? Do you have have any advice on the installation of slate? This will be our first time using and installing slate.

You have made a very nice,tidy job of that tim mate. Not bad at all for your first attempt at slating a roof. The slate hooks are a nice touch aswell though I would have been tempted to nail the slates aswell as using the hooks for a belt and braces type approach, no doubt it will be absolutely fine though. I wouldn't be surprised if your neighbours started asking if you could do theirs lol.
I agree, however I’ve never come across the hooks, or anyone that has them. Wind chatter would be my biggest concern, I doubt they’re ever going to fall off.
Unbelivable, can make slate roofing, but can't disable autofocus on camera.

I've been looking at this for a few hours now and what I found on multiple articles online is that you can't actually DIY a slate roof, you gotta hire a professional that costs way more than "regular" roofers because it's a very hard job and if I want it to be done right that's 100% the only way to go. But looking at your video, it does seem a bit more complicated than a regular asphalt roof, but it doesn't seem to be as bad as peole make it seem... I might be missing something though
I'm a regular roofer, I do slate roofs quite often. 50% slate and 50% tiles really. Every roofer I know knows how to slate, there are some types of slating that are way more advanced like when you have rounded or shaped slates or if you've got any swooped or laced in roof valleys. The roof in this video is basic though and you shouldn't call yourself a roofer if you can't do it.

You shouldn’t. With the proper roofing hammer/axe/and blade you end up with a chipped edge ( any shape) on all sides😊

Great job, I am a proffessinal roofer and have been for over 40 years, hooks were mostly used in europe and particuly for man made slates that will lift, we normaly use copper rivits that stops this, a traditional slate roof only needs 2 copper nails so think you have gone a little over the top and made hard work for yourself but great job anyway
I am just wondering about the the hooks, if slate is nailed is that not enough? As my 100 year old slate roof is just nailed and I am thinking of replacing it. I get that the hooks are an extra layer of security if nails fail, but I do wonder if that’s a very rare occasion and hooks not needed? I am planning to do it myself.
It’s instead of nails. It’s just personal preference. I’d probably nail if more visible or single storey but they are nice to use and means you get two choices on how you orientate slate. (If not holed)
Watched this as we need our slate roof replaced after 25 years. I'm praying we can find a contractor that follows the rules like you - congratulations on an excellent job!

Thank you for the video, I tried slating the first time round, used copper nails with copper pins and discovered not all slates need to be nailed down except for the 2nd or third row and nowadays they have a nail with the copper washer on to secure the slates. But good job, keep it up, although slates can be slippery when wet.

you would have an iq of 3 and a half to pay to have a slate roof installed. unless you hit the lottery never get a slate roof one small break in a piece of slate you're entire ceiling will be filled with water
🤔You would have to have a lot more damage than that. That roof was on 110 years and had dozens of cracked/slipped slates by the time I stripped it. None of those caused any leaks even without any membrane or felt.
