  • In this video I do a field test using the Sony A7iii + Sigma 85mm f/1.4 art vs the Canon EOS R + 85mm f/1.2 RF lens. I was very surprised by the results at f/1.4. Settings were the same on both cameras for each comparison photo. Enjoy!

    Edit: 1). I know I didn’t shoot the Canon lens at its fullest capability of f/1.2 for this video. 2). Both lenses are phenomenal! If I owned a Canon system, this would be the 1st lens I’d purchase. 3). Can we all just agree that 85mm is the best focal length for portraits? Love you guys! Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the video. I feel like the difference you note right away in the colour is due to the Sony body vs the canon body. You can’t really compare two lenses with such a massive variable.
    If you use the EF mount sigma adapted to the canon, you’ll find that it’s actually more contrasty and punchy than most canon lenses.

    This is the comparison I was hoping someone was going to do, but I was hoping it would've been on the R5 and A7r4 higher mp cameras. you said at the end of the video that both camera were at f1.4 for the pic you were talking about, was the Canon at f1.4 for all the pics ? because theoretically when the Canon is stopped down from f1.2 to f1.4, it should be sharper than the Sigma at f1.4 that is not stopped down. but you said the Sigma was sharper. so that is pretty amazing, the Sigma totally holds it's own against the Canon. to me both images look just as nice, the lessor contrast can be added in post no problem if wanted. Everyone is always talking about Canon glass. but personally the weight of the new Canon L glass is a big down side. 1195 g compared to 625g is almost double the weight of the the Sigma, and holding a 1195g lens up to your eye along with the camera weight can get tiring really fast. plus just walking around with it is more work. then you have the price difference of $2.800 dollars compared to $1.200 dollars, with that $1.600 dollar price different you can buy the Sigma 85 art and the Sony 135GM for the price of just the Canon 85L. and the Sigma image totally holds it's own against the Canon. and the weight advantage is off the charts. so to me the new Canon glass isn't a plus for the Canon system. between the weight and the price it's the down side of the Canon system. and the fact that unlike Sony, Canon won't work with third party lens manufacturers like Sigma, Tamron and Samyang. so all those companies have to reverse engineer all the lenses to get them to work on the Canon cameras. but there still is the Samyang 85 f1.4 for the Canon RF mount. at a low price. have your compared that lens with the Canon and Sigma ? personally if the Canon looked just slightly better, then I would say maybe it's worth the extra money, but I don't really see even a slightly better looking image. sure the f1.2 blur will be slightly more. but very slightly. personally I find it really hard to justify the Canon lens. The only Canon lens that I think is cool is the new RF 70/200 f2.8 L because of it's new smaller design. but the image quality isn't really any better than there older 70/200 f2.8 L. ( I wish in your comparison you compared the blur of the Canon at f1.2 to Sigma at f1.4 with some trees or foliage in the background ) something that shows off the quality of the blur. because the only thing that could justify the Canon price would be if the quality of the blur was allot nicer.

      @@squarefann Yess! Flawless, no AF issues, resolution is stellar. The output with that lens is way better on my R5 compared to the output when paired with the 5D IV (whereas with the Canon 24-70 2.8 II it is the other way around in my opinion/case). If you dont care about the weight it is a good option.

      @squarefann Рік тому

      @@niceyesplease ohh, really very grateful for your very useful opinion, thank you!🙏. I did not imagine that there was such a big difference between 5d4 and r5. I think that in addition to the superior resolution of the r5 the stabilizer in the body should also help a lot, because I am using this lens in 6d and (compared to other lenses that I have), this 85 dg hsm art, at least in my hands, needs a higher shutter speed than other lenses to avoid camera shake, perhaps it is the fault of the size and weight which make your wrist tremble more, that coupled with the shallow depth of field that this lens has and that the 6d does not have "eye tracking" or stabilizer makes it difficult to take sharp, correctly focused photos, at least handheld. The r5 is a temptation but it's so expensive...and I'm just a simple and poor amateur🙏😄

    • @niceyesplease
      @niceyesplease Рік тому +1

      @@squarefann the files from the Canon 6D are awesome, beautiful rendering / colors. I think you are right with the higher shutter speed and the Sigma. Have you considered the EF 85 1.4 IS, very good and easier to handhold, extremely fast AF, unfortunately pretty expensive. Or the Tamron 85 1.8 which has IS too I guess! Otherwise you could get the R6 next year and trade in your 6D. Or, what I think is awesome, get a used Sony A7III and couple it with a used Sony 85 1.8 (350-400 USD), lightweight and supposed to be an incredible performer comparable to the Sigma ;-)

    • @squarefann
      @squarefann Рік тому

      @@niceyesplease Thank you very much for your opinion and all the advice 🙏. Have you had a chance to shoot this lens in 6d? Well, in my modest experience and with natural light, working in raw, this lens has correct colors but perhaps a little off, for me it doesn't stand out for its color..., other canon lenses (such as the 24-70 II that you mention , which I don't have but luckily I was able to test for a few days) for me they produce a better and more pure and beautiful color in the canon style. With studio light it improves the colors a bit (or so it seems to me) and we avoid the problem of trepidation, etc (although I'm a simple amateur but I have some studio flash somewhere😄). The 85 1.4 L is I have also had the opportunity to test it a couple of days and they are so different... (this one and the sigma), they are so different that if your pocket is big you can have both without a problem, the rendering is very different , the bokeh..., and the stabilizer and the somewhat more contained weight and size are a point in favor of the canon, and the sharpness in the canon is also excellent -exquisite, in general it seems to me a lens with a little more "artistic" results "that sigma and sigma seems more" clinical or scientific "😄. The r6 is a good idea but (if I could💵) I would go for the r5 because the r6, although it is an off-roader, but seems more like a camera for sports or almost, and the R5 let's say for studio, portraits, fashion, etc and sometimes It may be important to be able to crop and detail, and I also want to try higher resolutions😄, although what I don't like is, as always in Canon, that it is very difficult for them to remove the low-pass filter, which is normal in the high-end of other brands in Canon the only thing they have released without a low pass filter is the 5dsr. I haven't tried any of the Sony ones yet unfortunately, also as you say I could sell my 6d and try to buy an a7III but I have a problem, most of the flashes I have and some accessories are compatible with Canon and I think I could only use them in manual mode and without HSS with Sony, so I'm a bit stuck in Canon😄...By the way, one last thing🙏, I would be very excited to see some raw of the r5+sigma85art ef, to be able to see it in lr, the resolution that get, dynamic range, color, etc, could you please share some with me? (for example by google drive or similar). Thank you very much🙏

    The Sony images are quite a bit warmer (too warm?) and the Canon more "cool". The bokeh of the Canon lens is quite a bit better imho - especially because the bokeh balls have softer edges and seem be perfectly round also in the corners whereas the Sigma bokeh balls look a bit like cat's eyes. If I had the choice, I'd clearly pick the R5 and the 85mm 1.2. Sad to say as a Sony user.... 😥😉😅

    The test is not correct! It is known that Lightroom does not support image profiles from Canon. Therefore, for correct comparison, you need to develop Canon files as well as Sony in native converters, or in Capture 1. Then you will see what is the color from Canon. I have a Sony A73 and Canon R. And another thing, you need to set the white balance of Canon priority atmosphere, then come out a nice warm tones, suitable for portrait photography.
    Тест не корректный! Известно, что Лайтрум не поддерживает профили изображения от Canon. Поэтому для корректного сравнения нужно проявлять файлы Canon равно как и Sony в родных конверторах, или в Capture 1. Тогда вы увидите что такое цвет от Canon. Имею Sony A73 и Canon R. И еще, нужно установить баланс белого у Кэнон приоритет атмосферы, тогда выходят приятные теплые тона, подходящие для портретной съемки.

    Thanks for doing this test (I was kinda curious about this comparison). That said, I would suggest that you compare the Sigma 85 1.4 vs Sony 85 1.4 vs Sony 85 1.8 (honestly, I don't care about the Sony 85 1.4, but that would be a good comparison). I feel that most people on the Sony system would be using the Sony 85 1.8 (as its a great value lens). I would be curios to see if the price difference is really worth it? On a side note, you could get the Sigma 85 1.4 & Sony 135GM and pay just a bit more than 1 Canon 85 1.2; I think this might be a more versatile set up.

    Dude, why not equalize white balance in post, if not at the time of shooting using a grey card and custom white balance)? And native sensitivity varies between the sensors, so rather than using the same settings for both cameras (which puts one at a disadvantage very few real-world users would suffer), you should have set each independently - say, based on spot meter reading of the model's skin? As is, it's hard to draw any conclusions from such uncontrolled pictures.

    • @costinvaly1

      Vibrance is mostly down to the sensor and the way the camera interprets the digital negative it natively converts from the photons. There's many flaws in this video, for example when he starts comparing the two at minute 5:00 , the shot with Canon is both farther from the subject (which impacts the depth of field) and also under-exposed compared to the Sony/Sigma combo. If i were him i'd shoot with both lenses from an equal distance. This video is so misleading overall. Yes you can get great pics with the Sigma, but the Canon version is on a whole other level from many standpoints.

Both lenses are totally sharp, Canon has a slightly bigger out of focus area because of the 1.2. But in both pictures, u just had 1 sharp eye. At the moment im using the Canon 85mm RF, but im thinking to sell it and buy the Sigma. Image quality is not a big difference in my view, but the canon is much heavier and more expensive. When i shoot weddings, i have to carry 2 bodies. One with 85 and one with 35 for example.

      Agreed both lenses are extremely sharp and other than the price point you can't go wrong with either. I definitely understand your point for shooting weddings. The lighter the better! Especially when running around with 2 camera bodies for 5+ hours. Thank you for watching!

      Hi Ash, thanks for watching. My personal opinion is you can't go wrong with the A7iii. Compared to the Eos R the autofocus is much better. & the a7iii has better video capabilities as well. Some folks will say wait for the potential a74 release next year but the a7iii is such an amazing camera. Thanks again for watching.

    My favorite blundle is Canon r5 with Canon RF 85mm f1.2......by Nikon i switch to Sony...a7 iii is 24pm camera...if you use Sony a7 R3 ...42mp...the result be for Sony! The price ,also is too important....Canon did it the best portrait lens....Sigma overrall...the Best lens for Sony...The result is sumular ,that make the cheper the better !

    Ridiculous test. The canon is underexposed 1 stop relatively the sigma...
    When you make a comparison test of lenses you make it on the same camera and with the same histograms during the shooting.

      Yeah plus something is happening in the editor that makes it seem like the sigma images are already processed instead of showing a real raw image

    You can't really compare them on different cameras, you should have used the same camera for both. Sony colors suck compared to Canons in my opinion. That being said, I have the Sigma and use it on my Canon cameras and it's flawless

    The video was, indeed, really nice but, tbh, If you didn't shoot the Canon at F1.2 then what did you pay the extra $1500 for? Are you even serious?

    at 5:50 stating that the Sigma is a hair sharper than the Canon is such an inaccurate and unprofessional statement when you consider the exposure differences between the two which allows the sharpness of the Sigma to be easily perceived compared to the underexposed Canon version. Everything was off in this whole comparison, I'm sorry to say this but this video is mostly misleading nonetheless.
