    I can't wait to get my hands on my own copy of this lens as soon as it comes out! It's going to be glued to my Sony A7III, that's a fact! What do you guys make to this lens? Will you be buying it on release?

      Nope, the one lens glued to my A7M3 is the 135mm f1.8 GM, especially after I tried the Sigma with my 4y old daughter. Before, with the Sony 85mm f1.8 that was still an option for focal length with her playing/running/biking, not anymore. Now the Sigma 85mm f1.4 will be doing studio duty, 135mm and 55mm for outdoor action.

      Nice combo 👍 The 135mm is too heavy for regular use for me, that's why I prefer the 85mm, but each to their own! 😊

      The in camera lens correction will only correct JPEGs. You will still have to wait for a version of your RAW editor to support this lens, or dial in the corrections manually in post.

      No worries. Firstly, do you shoot in RAW or JPEG? If you shoot only in RAW then you don't really need to worry about them as they only apply to JPEG images. If you shoot video then you might benefit from them as these settings effect video files too.

      In camera lens compensation is applied to JPEG images and video files and corrects for things like lens distortion and vignetting. If you have a lens that has a bunch of lens distortion issues you can activate the in camera lens compensation settings and this should fix them (or at the very least, make them look better).

    Hello great video I just purchased the old Sigma art 85mm 1.4 should I cancel it & get the newer one ? What do you think ?

    • @TomCalton
      @TomCalton  4 роки тому

      Hey Omars. If it was me, I would cancel the order and get the new version. The old Sigma is a good lens, but it's heavy and the AF is noticeably slower than the new one. If you're a purist and prefer to have a lens that is as optically 'perfect' as possible then the old one is probably will be more your thing as the new one utilises in-camera correction to compensate for lens distortion. Personally though, I couldn't give a toss about that - for me it's all about the end result and the lens's AF performance whilst shooting, in which case the new lens is superior in my opinion. I hope this helps!

  • @jklphoto
    @jklphoto 4 роки тому +1

    Lovely images. Amazing model. That lens is too sharp, showing every pore. If I may suggest, split lighting yourself is too harsh. Bring that keylight around 45° to your nose. Preferably to your left from camera position. Maybe a fill card to soften contrast. Cheers!

    • @TomCalton
      @TomCalton  4 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment. It's interesting that you say that the lens is "too sharp". In my opinion, a lens being super sharp is never a bad thing. It's really easy to soften an image in post if you want to do that, but it can be notoriously difficult to fix a soft/blurry image created by poor quality glass. For me, there's nothing more frustrating than reviewing your photos and having to bin off a bunch of great shots just because the lens just hasn't performed well.

    • @jklphoto
      @jklphoto 4 роки тому +1

      @@TomCaltonby saying "too sharp" I mean technical perfection is not necessarily needed for the art of portraiture. I'm old school, where we created sharpness by choosing the correct film, light modifier and lens. And yes, we often put crappie Cokin 083 square plastic filters in front of our expensive Zeiss/Hasselblad lenses. Of course, we were making a custom negative in-camera for a lab to print, not fixing it in-post.

      Am in that situation right now , but can't see any comparison online. I want to get the 135 and also a 85 , am mostly interested in knowing of the T-stops (light transmission) matches as I often shoot in a situation everything has to be dead on accurate.

    I froze the screen at 1:34 to look at your settings for portrait, I am guessing you are on AF-C so the eye tracking can continuously keep the focus on the eye and the mid setting so you are not rattling off at 10 fps?? Getting to grips with the wildlife set up I have dialled in but I have a portrait shoot end of the month continuous light, so these settings would be good for me, albeit I would need to up the ISO as it will be is a studio not outdoors? Sorry for the long post!

    • @TomCalton
      @TomCalton  3 роки тому +1

      You got it. AF-C with EyeAF. I find 10fps too fast - it clogs up the buffer and you just end up with a billion photos, half of which you'll never use. I prefer a slower pace where possible.
      If it's continuous light indoors, then yeah, you'll most likely need to boost the ISO and you won't need quite as fast shutter speed (I was outdoors in blazing sun shooting wide open, so this means a super fast shutter). Best thing to do is set your desired aperture. Take a test shot. Review the image and adjust either the shutter or ISO (or both) to correct the exposure from there. Just be careful not to go too low with your shutter speed of course! Hope this helps!

Could you help me out, I shoot a lot of studio model stuff using A7R4 with the Sony 85mm F1.8, I'm looking at buying the Sigma 85 after watching your reviews, the problem is this: when shooting half and three quarter length shots at around F1.8 to F2.8 ish in portrait as opposed to landscape, I find the Sony 85mm to be unsharp towards the edges - right where the subjects eyes fall. Does turning the in-camera corrections on affect the RAW files at all or is that just applying the correction to JPEGs?

    • @TomCalton
      @TomCalton  4 роки тому

      Thanks for your question. So, lens compensation is obviously applied to the JPEG file when shooting in JPEG or RAW+JPEG, though unfortunately the RAW file remains uncompensated. However, you can apply the lens corrections to your images in post with Lightroom or Photoshop by using the Lens Correction options and applying the applicable lens profile. Alternatively you can use the Sony Image Data Converter if you want the corrections to be applied to the RAW file. The converted files can then be saved as lossless TIFF or as a JPEG. I hope this helps!

      Tom Calton thanks Tom. I use C1 for portraits and they’re super slow getting profiles for Sigma lenses. I’m hoping that popularity of this lens and the fact that it’s just pincushion + vignetting means it won’t take them 6 months.

      @@TomCalton Yes, the Sigma is sharper (at least in the center), and has less chromatic aberration! But the Sigma has a lot of distortion too, the Sony keeps straight angles all the way to the edge! See this review: ua-cam.com/video/jaUeqKnz3IE/v-deo.html (at around 7:50).
      Than, shooting against the sun, the Sony gets a pleasant wash, while the Sigma gets ultra saturated green flare. ua-cam.com/video/Y-Qr7ghPwKg/v-deo.html
      Last, the Sigma has sharper bokeh, this together with the distortion and maybe a bit more vignetting makes for busier allround images (ua-cam.com/video/CtLuZfaANfs/v-deo.html).
      Sony Europe at this moment has a € 200 cashback on the GM, which makes the choice even more difficult.

    • @TomCalton
      @TomCalton  3 роки тому

      Distortion and vignetting is cleared up using either Sony's in-camera lens compensation settings, or for raw files, it's fixed automatically in LR when importing the images (if you set up LR to do that), so neither of those things bother me at all.
      I don't know if I agree about the bokeh - I love the Sigma's defocused areas personally, but each to their own. Same goes for the flaring - not something that tends to bother me as it's rare that I'd intentionally include flat within my shots. But thanks for answering!
