3:12 The statement “without drastic measures, the problem gets 10 times worse in a week” is based on the data in the graph below. The data from this graph comes from WHO’s official count. The slope of the lines in this graph determine how quick the so-called ‘doubling time’ is: the time till the problem is 2 times worse. You can see that initially, before much has been done, this slope is often consistent with a doubling time of less than 2 days, but it goes to between 2 and 3 days once a country is at least doing something, but has not imposed a lockdown on nonessential gatherings and closed schools etc. The USA (before the recommendation that just came out) had a doubling time of around 2 days (although it’s hard to say because of the testing situation mentioned below). That translates to the problem being 10 times worse in just under a week. In other places the doubling time was more like 2.5 days, in which case it’s 10 times worse in 8 days. Public awareness and bans on mass gatherings seem to help to bring the doubling time, usually to around 4 days. But when lockdowns are imposed it seems to get dramatically lower.

I don't know if you will see this, but I applied a simple mathematical model for coronavirus, and found out that if we do allow things to happen as is now, we will have as many as a quarter of the world population getting infected, so it is really important for these social distancing and drastic measures to take place.

In making this video you placed mathematical modelling above experience, and seemed to forget that there have been many previous pandemics from which lessons could be applied. You also appeared to be unaware that there were existing pandemic preparedness plans, based on prior experience, that included such ideas as minimising economic upheaval and disruption. Ask yourself how you allowed your thinking to be so blinkered.

2^x growth is much more drastic than x^2 growth people.
2^x is doubling while x^2 is squaring.
    Compare 2^(x+1) with (x+1)^2
    That is 2^x * 2 vs x^2 + 2x + 1
Subtract the originals and you get
    2^x vs 2x + 1
And we all clearly know that exponents get way more out of hand then multiplication because exponents are just ways to express lots of multiplication or division.
Just for a few numbers, 2^1 vs 1^2
    The first is bigger
2^2 vs 2^2 they are equal
    2^3 vs 3^2 8 vs 9
    2^4 vs 4^2 16 vs 16
    2^5 vs 5^2 32 vs 25
    2^6 vs 6^2 64 vs 36

This is great content. I love your channel. Stay healthy, Mithuna. Stay healthy, everyone. We have to use science and human solidarity to minimize the devastating effects of this disease. It CAN be done. We can do it but it requires knowledge and self-control. On a side note, this is still a disease that has a comparatively low death rate compared to some truly horrible diseases out there. It's clear to me that the world's systems aren't set up to deal with this type of catastrophe. Can you imagine what it would be like if, say, bird flu had become more easily spread to humans the way coronavirus has become? That has a death rate of around 60%! The world needs ever more investment in research and appreciation of science and the wonderful work many scientists are doing. Stay safe, everyone.

A friend who is a department head in a hospital not too far away from me told me about what it was like to work in a covid peak early on. At the time he was exhausted and desperate, wondering whether he would survive himself. That curve is no joking matter. As for China, their containment, though inhuman, did largely contain the spread: practically no curve at all. The result is a population that is largely not innoculated (very poor roll-out of vaccine and fewer actual covid survivors than elsewhere) proportionately. Now their lock-down has been completely reversed and their curve is skyrocketing. Sadly predictable.

Social distancing is something i been doing my whole life, sure probably not healthy but i'm ok with it. Usually only social interaction i have is with my co-workers. Now that i can't actually go to public places willy nilly it actually feels like i'm isolated, but the silly thing is that is just normal for me, but it's the fact that we shouldn't that makes it hard, it's like the rebel in me wants to get out. I can only imagine those who are used to social gatherings on top of now needing to stay home must be really difficult to deal with, hard to resist scratching that itch. If am having this anxiety, I can only imagine social people must feel much worse. But if we can at least cut out as much as possible by avoiding unnecessary social gatherings, i do think it's worth the lives saved in the long run. just gotta power through it! And if you do have to go out, try to keep your distance from others, wash hands regularly, and do not touch your face.

I feel angry. I feel like my life is being stripped away from me and all the things I’ve ever known or loved are being destroyed. I never have the opportunity to do anything besides the things I can do in my house and it’s really making me wish things could go back to normal.

Lovely! Watchers make sure to explain this to elderly people you know. In my country, of all demographic categories it's the elderly that seem the least careful. They just roam the streets while most others are staying at home. The oldest generations are used to much more immediate and much deadlier threats, so they easily underestimate such more subtle and insidious one.

    • @LookingGlassUniverse

Hey, this is an important question! The answer depends a lot on the country you are in. Some countries are not testing as widely as others. If you check your government’s website they will give advice. Alternatively, call your doctor’s office and ask them. They can tell you the protocol. Good luck!!

    • @______-mz3vk
      @______-mz3vk 4 роки тому

Following the recommendations of the US government, if you get the symptoms of incfection, you should not leave your home unless the symptoms are serious.
      www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html
If it turns out that you are indeed infected, you would unnecessarily put the lives of many people at risk. More importantly, hospitals can only treat so many people at once. It is recommended that you call a general practitioner or a pharmacist to avoid overwhelming health care facilities. That is probably the main risk currently.
I would also tend to instinctively prioritise my own health however, as mentioned in the video, most people can recover at home.
I hope this helps, take care of yourself.
