I'm also from England. I have to agree with myself, (joke) that our trains are probably the most beautiful in the world. Especially when you look at such trains as the Duchess of Sutherland, and Mallard. Stunning!

765 ran with a diesel because of the grades on the Pocahontas division, to stretch the coal load and to provide backup for any mechanical failure. She is wearing a hooter because she is running in the heart of N&W territory, it is off Y6a 2153.
It looks like it because the actual locomotive the Polar Express is based off of (Pere Marquette 1225) was also built by the same company the locomotive in this video was built by, the Lima Locomotive Works. You can read more about the 1225 and the 765 from the websites of their respective groups. Here's an example of driver control, climbing from cold out of the depot. One of the most elegant looking steam locos on our side of the pond. ua-cam.com/video/pU6RSH7j-PU/v-deo.html
For backup power just in case something goes wrong with the steam engine and also for dynamic braking, which is essential in the area this video was shot in as it is very hilly.
Dylan Foeller That's why the diesel is there. In flat terrain such as Ohio and Indiana, Norfolk Southern typically lets the 765 run on its own without any diesel assistance.
No, it was just there to provide back up power just in case it broke down and to help provide dynamic brakes when it was going downhill on steep grades.
Fantastic hearing that whistle reverberate in the canyon.
@Marilen Pascua no it’s not
@Marilen Pascua PM 1225 isn’t in this video.
@Marilen Pascua this is 765 with a hooter whistle, what makes you think it’s the polar express?
@Derpy Possum Oh no
0:44 i absolutely love!! the how loud the chug is!
It makes her seem truly alive, breathing heavy as she starts up.
@@wolfbyte3171Yes. They just don’t quite sound the same in the locomotives that are converted to oil burners.
What a fine piece of machinery.
Indeed.
AmericanSteelVeins HELL YEAH
SHE IS SOOOOOO, BEAUTIFUL!! Living Breathing,Lovely work of art,Listen to Her Heart,Beat,Chug,Chuf,Chuff, WOW..!
I'd prefer the 1225, because it reminds me of the polar express
i'm from England and i must say american locomotives are HUGE (compared to English and just because they are huge)
I'm also from England.
I have to agree with myself, (joke) that our trains are probably the most beautiful in the world. Especially when you look at such trains as the Duchess of Sutherland, and Mallard. Stunning!
Yeah, but I think the "giants" of America have a unique charm to them also
Aidan Brown I think they just try to outdo us. :P
Well they have to pull over larger distances many times the size of England don't they, but imagine getting stuck at a level crossing for one 😂
Aidan Brown True!
I can only imagine how it sounds and feels when it's passing you at high speed. Quite amazing I would imagine!
That whistle demands your attention
Nice to hear that N&W “Hooter”!!
1:24 that whistle had a frog in it's throat!
what a powerful horn
0:06 thats N&W 1218's Whistle
No its from a y6
oh😱
1:07 onward sounds like that things taking on a way trip to hell.
Amazing machine and what a catch with a slip. Awesome hornsound, too :)

Love the whistle!!!
0:39 what you do in?
Is that a N&W whistle on her?
+HotRod Buick Yes. It is from a scrapped N&W Y6.
It is Beautiful!!! :)
HotRod Buick That's the N&W Hooter whistle on her (her secondary whistle)
B&O EM-1s used the same type.
So why was 765 speaking in "hooter" whistle?
It had a hooter whistle from a scraped N&W Y locomotive because it was running on former N&W rails.
ah makes since the wanted to honor the N&W line.
Sounds like the whistle from the n&w 1218
The train horn such a great way to sound all the people that the steam train is coming
Man that is one fire breathing beast there
Great whistle sound
Is that 1218’s whistle
Amazing sound
why does she have N&W 1218 whistle
Holy shit! What a beast
She sounds like a beauty
Sand???????? Good video
Awesome
I saw this bad boy in the yard at the railroading museum of Pennsylvania, still don't know y tho
Why Is She Wearing A Hooter????
BECAUSE SHE IS ON THE FORMER N&W RAILS!!!!!!!!!!
the whistle doesn’t really match but that is still badass!
that kinda looks like the polar express

It's the 1225
Excuse me it's the 765
Connor Putman nop its the 1225
No, it's the NKP S - 2 Class Berkshire loco.
Which I'm pretty sure is the 765.
They was a frog in the whistles valve!
Here's an example of driver control, climbing from cold out of the depot. One of the most elegant looking steam locos on our side of the pond. ua-cam.com/video/pU6RSH7j-PU/v-deo.html
damn diesle had to help
It's there to provide power to the coaches, and help the locomotive IF she needs it.
rite@@bazis98
What is the EMD there for ?? Just in case??
mostly dynamic breaking.
Felix Thank you .
I thought it was if it ran out of water
Thats also a GE. GE ES44AC
I think they should have used Pere Marquette 1225 as a backup instead of the diesel
why does she have N &W1218 whisel
It's not 1218's whistle. It's a whistle off of a scrapped N&W Y6.
It had a hooter whistle because it was on former N&W rails.
That's K&L's 765's b sounds.
like train
1:14 sound like an JW raptor idk why
What an odd sounding girl, but beautiful nonetheless
The whistle is kinda freaky!
That's 1218's whistle
Why is a steam train pulling a diesel? Interesting.
That makes sense. Im just so used to seeing it the other way around.
Whatever position the steam engine is in depends on what railroad's tracks the steam engine is running on says.
Appalachianrails would it also be to supply the coaches electricity, if they are not original and the steam locomotive does not have an alternator?
765 ran with a disel
Lmao I road behind her on that day
the diesel give the steam engine more power
No, it was just there to provide back up power just in case it broke down and to help provide dynamic brakes when it was going downhill on steep grades.
Hii
