- Does the Electric Classic Mini still gave the spirit of the original? In this second part, we take an in-depth look at our superb Classic Mini, converted to electric using Fellten's bolt-on, plug-in, FL10 Mini system.
First, we talk to a long-time Mini enthusiast about his experience with our Mini. He shares his thoughts on whether or not the electric Mini still has the same spirit as the original.
Then, we tell you everything there is to know about the conversion process and the technical aspects of the conversion. We discuss the challenges of fitting an electric motor and battery pack into a tiny car like a Mini, and how the conversion team was able to overcome them, while keeping the conversion fully reversible.
Finally, we take the Mini for a spin to test its full range (110 miles) and how it copes with Melbourne’s steepest hill (30°)! The drive is fantastic as the conversion keeps the driving feel of the original Mini, but makes it ever more fun and livelier once you flick the Sport mode switch.
So, does the electric Mini still have the spirit of the original? You'll have to watch the video to find out!

The perfect battery capacity and vehicle size for EV's. Marvellous job all.
Thank you, it is all about getting the right balance
No holes to drill will make this the perfect conversion kit, period! That in itself is a great selling point. For the enthusiast, that's the winning formula!
That is a key part of every conversation system we sell no modification to the original vehicle
@@FelltenSystems I am aware of that and it has to be repeatedly told, since it's the best concept that exists. Unbolt old, bolt up new. Simple and easy and clean! Way to go guys.
Man, the production value alone was impressive, actually feels more like a film/documentary, than a you-tube video lol I was excited for this video, I knew that torque would make it extra "zippy"! :D
Dave used to do documentary productions before he started Jaunt and joined forces with Fellten.
@@FelltenSystemskudos, to Dave! :D
I love everything about this. From the packaging of the conversion, the reversibility of it, the care and attention to detail of keeping the car’s “soul” while taking away its inefficiencies and reliability issues, the production quality of the videos.
It’s absolutely inspiring.
Thank you
Excellent video!
Thank you
Have been tracking the progress of classic Mini EV builds from various companies in the UK and US over the last few years and this is just awesome to have here in Australia with your UK partner. Really love the attention paid to making it drive as smoothly as possible as an every day driver. No point in having a silly amound of instant power and just spinning the wheels. Congrats, build quality looks immaculate.
Great video - best bit was seeing the Mini expert's grin after driving it!
Your whole business plan is solid, I'd love to see this tech being put into commercial vehicles like a ute or van. No doubt this would spark another trade to our automotive industry and I'm super excited for your team!
We do have some commercial projects but there not as fun to share on UA-cam.
@@FelltenSystems Do some skids in the EV work ute and lads would be throwing cash at you lot! :P It's a cool future for our fellow tradies!
Bring them into full production. Cheap and cheerful. This is the sort of thing the government should be looking at. Not overpriced electric cars.
We are actively trying to get into full production but government support is lacking.
This is a great conversion but don't start thinking it's cheap and cheerful ... If you knew the full price you would probably want to have a lie down.
Awesome! Needs pointy chrome mirrors with that much power 😂
Very true but you can’t see anything out of them 😂
@@FelltenSystems Of course the answer to that is, "who needs mirrors when no one is going to pass you?"
That is one beautiful build !
Thanks
Fully agree with your comments on building an EV that is just nice to drive. I converted a MK1 Audi TT which is my daily driver. 120kw is more than adequate for a fun drive. If you're looking for a modern classic conversion that still turns heads, I'd fully recommend the TT.
Great car to convert
Simply Awesome! congrats!
I want one. I had a new British built Canadian 1974 Austin Mini 1000 when I was in college. I loved it. It was a great fun vehicle until the the typical electrical problems crept up. Best fun car I had. Great installation not needing new holes etc.
Contact us if you want one. 😁
The only thing I would change are the seats, that headrest will do nothing, never did. But then again, it's what the Mini was.
Agree they are pointless. Safety was never the mini’s strong point.
Well put together video Dave! Loved the hill test and (other) Dave's reaction was priceless. I saw the kit you had at Fully Charged - very well thought out. If I still had one of my classic minis it would be converted to electric in a heart beat!
Thank you. You can always have the team find and build you a mini 😁
Well I'd better start saving then!@@FelltenSystems
Very well done!
Thank you
Special driver dude has what they call the EV Grin!
Sure does
Great build, done it justice that's for sure. But I cannot imagine driving mine without that (slow) a-series.
Hopefully synthetics become a thing, but I'd be happy with under 7 seconds!
Once you drive it you quickly forget about the a-series
@@FelltenSystems hopefully I'll get the chance someday. Been lucky enough to drive a vtec, K-series and huyabusa converted mini's and each were crazy experience. I would still prefer a manual for a weekend car, but if ICE is killed off then for sure something like you have done here is a no brainer.
Agree with comments above, excellent video quality, great editing interspersing details with test driving, explaining and showing most of the process of conversion, then to see the mini enthusiasts Ev grin was priceless! Very well done! I’m interested to see practical vans like the VW caddy in conversion. We’ve had a 2006 seven seater which has been the most marvellous family wagon, work vehicle and camper but would love it to be fully electric. Another question is, can have gears with an electric motor improve efficiency and range? And does that interfere with regen or not?
Thank you for watching so glad you enjoyed. Yes gears or a second gear can help when at higher speeds so you can maintain within the efficiency band of the motor. But so fare it’s been hard to change gear under load smoothly. Plus the gains are not massive so must choose not to both.
will this ever be considered for the home DIYer? I'd happily sign a liability waiver, or become certified
We have spoken about it and looking at options but to maintain our 3 year warranty currently needs to be fitted by an approved installer.
This car is so cool, love the converson.
Problem this car was a death trap when it was gas and it is still a death trap.
Love this. The MX5 conversion is more likely closer to one I'd like to do on a rwd corolla ke70. But the power of the motor used in this mini conversion is probably enough for that. What I'd like to get from a conversion, like this, is a reliable and low running cost old car that is perhaps something of a reflection of who i am. And devastating mid-range torque from 80 to 140kph. Are there any special considerations for highway running? My commute is about 70km/day of which 50 or so would be at highway speeds.
I'm wondering how a kit like this could be used to fit in a Locost/Caterham/Lotus Super 7 type car. I imagine a Locost being larger and heavier, but might still work with a similar sized motor and battery pack.
We have been looking into this recently, the drive train would work well as it’s actually limited on the mini but would probably want a 35kwh battery pack.
Ultimately my classic mini will be converted. Might be a few years away though. Every build is different, but is there an estimate on cost? I'm located in AUS
Costs do very based on vehicle spec. Please reach out to Jaunt motors and they can give you a full quote
Cost is $60k plus on their website.

Hi , good day
Does this model of Mini have A/C ? And can it be carried over into the electric vehicle? Very custom conversion!
How was Renault twizy 100hp a success?
I would to buy the project of twizy
What's happening to that green car on the hoist in the background?
Not being converted to electric to our eternal disappointment.
How much does it cost?!
When a battery can weigh the same as a tank full fuel and give 250 miles range, i think then we will see ev conversions take off, and we are really not that far off from being able to achiever this. I think some manufacturer will develop a drive train conversion that is much lighter and more efficient, it is just a matter of the braniacs or a guy in his shed coming up with a way to use an electric motor uniquely new way for things to change completely,
$110K start range? crickey you wanna be a real lover of minis. yep we are..😁
Got fifty grand sterling burning a hole in your pocket? Why not invest it in an old banger and let it burn a hole in your driveway instead?
"Felching"?
