      @@jehugarcia It says in the video the batteries are included...but I'm pretty sure they are not...right? How much will the batteries set me back? Where is the best place to get a pack and what are the options? Do you have a DIY pack that would work with this build? PS I hope the movie vw-van build is going well in NYC.

    This is (obviously) a very complex conversion, and one not to be undertaken by your average weekend mechanic. On the other hand, this video is very comprehensive, extremely thorough, and beautifully filmed, edited and narrated. It's one of the few conversion videos I've seen that provides an honest depiction of the amount of planning and labor required. And for that I thank everyone involved with the project. Great work, guys! 👏 🙌 🤜🤛

    • @thorbjrnhellehaven5766
      @thorbjrnhellehaven5766 6 місяців тому +1

      The primary challenge with conversions, is that you have to design the drivetrain to fit the vehicle.
      While new vehicles, you can have an approach do design the vehicle around the drivetrain.
      It's not a problem, but it's just some restrictions compared to new design.

    So what do i need? A Karmann Ghia, a Tesla, you, lots of dollars. I call occasionally :) .Unfortunately, Karmann is no longer an independent brand, it went bankrupt a few years ago. The Ground and the factory were bought by Volkswagen. VW Tiguan and Skoda Fabia are now being built there.

    This video is well done and very completel This would involve an $8,000 kit (with flywheel) and $18,000 worth of 6 $1,500 used Tesla Battery packs? Labor included could be a little less than $30,000 (with tax)? An older Ghia with a bad motor might be $10,000. The special VW 2 speed transmission for EV Motors is $2,000 more. This car complete would be about $35,000 ??
    I love my Ghia, but I can put a high performance 200 hp engine in it and full suspension replacment for $5,000.

    This is awesome. Amazing work guys. I just have a couple of questions.
    1. What happens to the gear stick after the conversion since you don't necessarily need that anymore?
    2. I have seen that most EV's have a 12V battery for starting the entire vehicle, does yours also have a such an accessory.
    3. Is the clutch pedal or maintained or do you remove that entirely since its not useful in such a conversion?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @rickm7209
      @rickm7209 2 роки тому +2

      1. Gear stick is used to select one gear (1st or 2nd) for around town, another for highway (most ev conversions). 2. Yes, ev conv's convert high voltage via (from traction battery) to normal car battery (12v) which runs monitors, displays, lighting, etc. 3. Clutch still used to switch gears but you don't use it much. Most ev motors are high rpm giving plenty of range in given gear.

    This may be a stupid question, but why wouldn't you position the battery boxes lower and closer to the center of the car body (like in a Tesla or new EV)? Like on/under the floor pans? It seems like that would more evenly distribute the weight, but is it a matter of space/clearance/ or safety? Or is it because the batteries need to be accessible?
    Great video. Thank you for putting this all out there, its very helpful.

    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 3 роки тому +1

      There really isn't space under the car for the battery packs, besides they would need a protective cover to keep them from being damaged from whatever may blow up from the road surface. Inside there's not really much space either, so the front trunk and rear engine bay is the most logical places to place the batteries. It's just one of those things you have to work around when converting a gas guzzler instead of constructing a new vehicle. Starting from scratch would allow for a better design.

    OK ... I completely understand the running gear and electronics. I am a machinist by trade and an instrument technician. I am 58 and built my first dune buggy when I was 14. I have owned several VW's including a "Thing" (I miss that car). I think I could handle this project .... but .....
    My question is what do you do for heat (and defrosters) and A/C ...plus what about batteries in super low temperatures (like -30)?
    We live in Vermont .... very cooooooold Vermont ... I just plowed 6" of snow today.
    Long story but my wife was paralyzed from the shoulders down in a diving accident when she was 12. She drives a modified mini van to and from work (about 20 min drive) with hand controls.
    An electric vehicle would be perfect for this short drive. You need a darn good heater in the winter (last year we had a few nights that hit -30) .... most of the winter 0 to 25 deg F. In the summer we only have 5 days above 90 ... but since she can't take the heat, I would need A/C (inside of a car can still get up to 140 deg F in the summer).
    I would think a simple "hair dryer" type heater would just drain a battery fast. Same if you had a motor driven A/C. Plus as far as I know battery capacity goes way down in cold weather.
    Do you guys ever address these problems?
    Awesome car by the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks ..... Mike

      EV West says $7500 for the kit plus batteries and cables etc. Looks like each pack is about $800 on ebay. I'd assume other bits accessories push this well over $10k.

    Great detail in the video about installation and setting parameters. Thanks! But a couple of Q's: The convertible top occupies the space where you placed the rear batteries in the coupe. Any thoughts on placement for the convertible? And, what about Ludicrous Speed settings (I'll worry about the nose rising above 90mph!)?

    How much heavier is the car now? Did you need to upgrade the suspension?

    What happens in the winter without the factory heat exchangers? I guess you either freeze or consume a lot of battery energy adding some kind of electric heat?

      Or you live in California where it doesn’t freeze half of the year

      @@jehugarcia I actually run the factory heat exchangers with heat pumped in from my kitchen air fryer, the only problem is the custom heat hoses are insanely long! It limits me to 30 foot trips maximum.(that's round trip) I can't even go to the corner store, but I stay toasty in the winter 💯💯

    Did you have to change/beef up the suspension to handle the additional weight? Also can AC be included? In hot climates it is a must. What was the cost for the conversion? Cost of the donor car, cost of conversion, and labor.

      I've seen electric AC kits. There us a Cortina Mk 1 here in Australia using Tesla batteries and a Hyper9 motor and the AC is awesome.
