- Part 1: We left the snow and cold in Minnesota and traveled down to Marco Island, FL. My Father-in-law and I decided to do some surf fishing from South Marco Beach one morning. The bite wasn't fast and furious but it didn't take long for us to start catching various species including my first ever Pompano!

LOL, that's exactly where I fish when I'm down there. Fortunately we stay at a place that's pretty much across the street from there so basically a 10 minute walk. Last time out I got 2 nice snook on the left side of the rocks. In a pounding surf too, I didn't expect to get anything but the surf didn't seem to affect fishing. Also lost two that just overpowered my set up. A guy out on the rocks said he thought they were redfish, he was up higher and could actually see them. Oh well.
Nice video Mitch! Never had an interest in saltwater fishing until I went on a charter for Mahis. Had an incredible day and I was hooked. Glad you got on some fish!
My first time Salt fishing was for Mahi too in Hawaii. I had a good one on and it went airborne and through the hook. That was the only bite we got that day...I have been bringing my Travel Rod down to FL these last few years and it's been a blast learning something new every trip.

Great video! My son and I love catching pompano on bottom rigs and pompano jigs! We are planning on visiting the same area this upcoming December. Do you know what types of fish from the surf will be around then?
Truthfully, I do not. I live in MN so I'm not too well versed on Salt but I've picked some things up over the last few years vacationing near Marco Island, FL. I would just bring the gear that you can and visit a bait shop/marina when you get into town to get a pulse on what species are around and the activity level. We have had good experiences at Rose Marina for getting some local information, picking up Shrimp, fishing tackle and even renting a Pontoon for a day or two.

Not a great way to hook a live shrimp - either put it in the tail to aid casting or put it in under the main spine in the head taking care not to hit the gangla (brain) so that it stays alive. Latter does not cast well but works off a weighted float rig...
The majority of the shrimp in the bucket were already dead. Usually with live shrimp I will hook them under the spine and free line them. This was my first time surf fishing. I only get out saltwater fishing for about a week each year so I'm definitely no expert (from MN). I appreciate the tips!

What time of the day did you find best fishing over there? I’m going there next month and I’m gonna be right on the beach for a week
Jared Sithong Rather than time, Tides are more important. I'd recommend downloading the "Tides Near Me" App. It will tell you this tidal schedule and is experiment with fishing the falling and rising tide to see which is better for your spot, species and location. I did enjoy getting to the beach early in the morning before it got busy, we were fishing mostly a rising tide in this video.
Looks like you were using a triumph travel rod, which weight were you using? I'm also from MN
Will Martens Good Eye Will! Yes, I was using the Triumph Travel rod, I have brought that a lot of places. I was using the Medium power in this video.
Did you travel with surf rods or rent while on the island? We’ll be there in March.
We brought some travel rods with us to fish from the beach. I have 2 St. Croix Triumph Travel Rods and my father in law has Diawa Ardito travel rod.
We just bought a place on marco island. Never been there before, so I haven't fished it yet. Have done a ton of pier fishing in Florida over the years at Redington long pier (for decades before it fell apart) and the sunshine skyway pier in Tampa areas. Was all the surf water you found knee to waist deep? My dad's in his late 60s and I want to make sure I find good safe fishing for him on the regular on marco. Looks like fish off the jettys?
Congrats! I'm no expert on the area but from what I have found I would say that you can definitely find good surf fishing in knee deep to waist deep water. Depending on the tide the deepest I went was over my hips.
@@MitchBradshaw looked like you were fishing off the rock jetty? Was that by tiger tail? My folks retired to the UP in 2014. I'll be ice fishing next week! Have you gotten out on the ice yet in Wisconsin?
@@andrewblanchard4265 I haven't spent much time fishing near Tiger Tail, most of my surf fishing was done at South Beach. Nice! I got out on the ice here in MN 2 days ago. There's been ice up north for a few weeks now but finally most of the lakes around me are accessible.
@@MitchBradshaw one of these years we are going to check out lake of the woods for a few days. We thought about doing a cast and blast there in the fall for ducks and fall walleyes.
@@andrewblanchard4265 I go up there ice fishing in the winter but still have never been open water. A friend of mine did a cast and blast weekend up there this fall for the Grouse opener and that sounded like a riot. Ducks would be awesome too!
