Is Mental Illness Curable?

  • Mental health is something we all have. Just like we have a physical health. We can have days where we feel on top of the world, checking so many things off of our to-do list, meeting with friends, feeling fulfilled and just good. You know those days? Maybe it’s been awhile since you’ve had one of those days, maybe things have been so stressful that you can’t even remember what that kind of day feels like.. Don’t worry! We will get to that issue in a bit. But for now, just know that mental health is defined as “a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.” If we are taking care of ourselves as best we can, taking breaks when we need them, making time for the things that we enjoy, etc etc.. we should have a pretty good mental health. We should feel good, be able to manage all we need to each and every day, and be pretty happy....

    I ended up smoking heroin in my late 20’s for a whole year because of my depression and anxiety. I’ve been 8 months clean now and going to treatment. Finally agreed to antidepressants a month ago. Unfortunately, I had completely lost my mind and therefore I lost everything else. It’s been hard but my therapist told me about the plasticity thing. He explained it like two freeways. When I started using heroin I plowed a new highway through, now that I’m off, I have to go and re-plow my old freeway that had filled in (with weeds and plants). It’s been a hard road but I’m sticking to it.

    Kati, why do I feel an enormous empathy for animals? One day I saw a little cat and I couldn't take her home and, after half of the year, I still feel terrible that I left her.. I cry over the movie of the animal, but not people and also I love them more that people sometimes.. Why is this?

    • @teclagough389
      @teclagough389 5 років тому +12

      For me, I care more about animals than people. How I see it, it is typically easier for people to get help over animals. We can call someone, knock on a door , even go into a random store to find help. Animals have been evolutionary developed to rely on humans.

      I'm the same way. An animal is just who and what it was made to be and needs to be and dose not pretend to be any thing else. It has no ego or malice. It only wants what is needed for survival not vanity. it doesn't lie or manipulate if it is violent it is for food or defense nothing more .it puts the needs of its family above its self it knows it's place in the pack. I find that if a person is of these virtues you will connect more with animals than ppl . I to feel sad that I can't save all of them , but I think I may be somewhat projecting on to the animals .the shitty way ppl make me feel and wishing I could be free from every shitty person turns in to I should save every animal even though I can't and don't know if it is OK and happy on its own.❤️

    Thank you so much! This gave me a lot of hope and clarity over a question I've had for years. When I first heard the term 'mental illness', it scared me because it sounded permanent and essentially unchangeable. Perhaps you could make it better, but you'd never 'come out of it'.
    It was when I read about neuroplasticity a while ago that I realized there was real hope for long-term change, and it affirmed the value of therapy and learning new thought patterns. I've never heard the balloon analogy! I've always likened it to paths in a forest; continual use packs the dirt and keeps the path, but if you chop a new path through the forest, it'll grow while trees grow back in the old unused path.
    Your analogy using the cold finally put into words what I'd begun to theorize lately, 'mental illness' is an illness in the sense that a cold is an illness. One can't be 'cured' in the sense that once it goes away, it'll never, ever come back, but that's just like the cold! If you heal up from it, and then take care of your health, you'll be far less likely to experience it again, and likely not as bad, since you learned the signs and treatments the last time.
    It makes me realize anyone can experience mental illness, and that we all do from time to time, which really normalizes it, and also then tells me, that even though some may experience it more severely than others, we all can do something to heal up from it and get to a place of mental health! Thanks again! I love your channel and what you do!

    I’m a little confused on the statement about mental illnesses can’t be cured but in the neuroplasticity explanation, it almost sounds like it is contradicting the original statement. From my experience, and what I understand of my diagnosis of bipolar disorder, I can re-wire my thought processes to help me in stabilizing my mood, to be at and maintain baseline. I may have periods of stability, but regardless of what mood zone I’m in, I will always have bipolar disorder, even if my symptoms are not evident

    • @swearveit
      @swearveit 5 років тому +4

      I'm seeing the same thing about my illness too. The mind is such an interesting organ. This is why there is such a big stigma about mental illness, mainly many thinking its not real and a bunch of gibberish. So exhausting!!😞

    • @Towanda-qh2cw
      @Towanda-qh2cw 5 років тому +5

      swearveit - I’ve gone back and forth on the stigma thing. I’ve gone from being ashamed that I have a mental illness, something that is not visible but is something that was keeping me from living a full life, to not caring what others think. It was a difficult road to get there but I think the more of us who are ashamed, the more stigma will remain. Individually, each of us has to find that peace and reconcile within ourselves and fight the stigma by taking that 1st step and not being ashamed.

    • @fearlesskitten2475

      I have BPD and I agree with your comment. I could be wrong but I there was no cure for personality disorders. I'm scratching my head.
      Also, I'm ashamed of some of behaviors but not my BPD. It has a really bad stigma and a lot of therapists won't take us but I never did anything to 'contract' it. It's either genetics or my abusive childhood. I didn't have control over either of those things so just trying to get better.
      Wishing you the best🙂

    Kati, with all due respect, as a psychologist I truly worry about the message in this video. People experience many different mental illnesses and experience them for many different reasons. Adjustment disorders *do* remit. People *do* experience single episode depressive disorders. People experience acute stress reactions and acute/brief psychotic episodes that are *not* “incurable.” Each person’s situation is unique and they should consult with their local psychologist and/or psychiatrist with questions regarding their own unique situation/illness/diagnosis and treatment plan.
    I do think we can all agree though that promoting mental health and wellness is a step from which everyone can benefit.

That therapist includes an “impressive” announcement at start of each video theyre “scientifically” backed. Another viewer pointed out in the comments psychology is a social science - not science that’s implied in the announcement - it’s a social science not a chemistry equation - while I may be incorrect or misunderstood, it seems to be an effort to promote the assumption whatever those videos teach must be correct - some people may buy into that correlation which isn’t to my knowledge how it works - since it’s a social science as that other viewer wrote in the comments not a clean science formula like chemistry equation....im so thankful I found your channel it’s very uplifting healthy and richly informative

    Great analogy of a marble creating a divot in the brain's sand. I use a sled with my patients. The sled goes down the same track over and over again until it gets really deep. It's difficult to get the sled to go down a new path, since it keeps wanting to go back down the comfortable, well-worn track. But keep going down the new path and it will become deeper and deeper, and easier to navigate. And that old path will just become covered with snow and get more and more shallow.

So nice to know what's out there. I totally agree that the relationship with one's therapist(s) is crucial. I'm currently seeing a wonderful local therapist and your book helps me appreciate even more how special she is.
    I highly recommend this book to everyone! If you have mental illnesses yourself, Kati will help you get your bearings in the mental health treatment field. If you love someone who has mental illnesses, this book will help you understand a lot more about the field and hopefully allow you to be a better support in your loved one's life. Even if you're not new to dealing with mental illness, I'm sure you'll learn a lot - or at least enjoy the refreshing review of some key topics.

    I healed myself from a nervous breakdown,drug addiction,depression was sectioned, etc,by neuroplasticity and only worked it how i achieved it 20 years when studying neuroscience,I then was full time carer for my 82 year old Mum who had dementia for 7 years until she passed away in May,the mind can do anything you want it to do when you give the right data and information,I am conscious in my subconscious,thinking properly is a great skill,the mind is a beautiful paradox,it uses itself to understand itself,thought is creative,emotion is energy in motion,what you think is what you become,the majority do not understand the frequency and vibration of language and words and their power internally and externally,the answers are within not without,heart and thought coherence,think with your heart and let your brain follow.

    My anxiety is like a fast growing weed. Every day I hack away at it to keep it somewhat under control.
    If I focus on one spot, that might start to look okay, but then I turn around to find another spot overgrowing. And if I take my attention off of any one area, thinking it’s okay for now, everything grows back. Someone told me that if you grow up with a lot of trauma, then that’s just how your brain develops. I hope I can be normal someday, but I’m not super hopeful...

    I sort of get your point, sort of not. I suffered from social anxiety for a year and a half, and last April I recovered. I no longer suffer from any of its symptoms, my brain no longer thinks the way it did. Yes, I occasionally have nervous moments, but it’s the healthy kind, normal kind. Hence I say I’m cured from my mental illness.

    Anything can be cured through faith, follow not ur heart or even the thoughts n things that betrayed u in your mind, time heals so be patient and endure and Believe through all the storms that y are strong. The human spirt, mind, and body was made to go thru anything and prevail, the world has many lies but the truth will never switch up, we are all blessed no matter how cursed society and the world is. LIVE AND SMILE and you will be surprised of what you can do and become!

    Kati,. Thanks for this video. I knew the answer beforehand, but wanted to hear what you had to say. I was especially glad to be reminded of the elasticity of the brain. A positive point. I have a BA in psychology and an MA in Community Counseling. I have worked for at least 15 years in case management, and counseling with mentally ill (many chronic).
    I used diabetes and asthma to explain to many that their mental illness will always be there. However, with the right medication (staying on your meds), therapy, good coping skills and a support network, the symptoms can be managed very well. I think it's important to remember that some people have a predispodition to get a mental illness, based on heredity. I know this was the case for me. My Mom was hospitalized once for depression and likely had an undiagnosed anxiety disorder. I have major depression and generalized anxiety disorder as well as ADD.
