  • Our Governor did an outstanding job leading us through the current pandemic and has began opening our state back up. During phase 1 there are still many restrictions for travel and business but one of the things he eased up on was our ability to travel on the road system between communities. This has allowed us to resume our explorations of Alaska while social distancing. We enjoy overlanding in Alaska in our Winnebago Revel 4x4 Van. Hope you enjoy our adventures!

    Fantastic video! Your content continues to improve with scope and detail. I love the way you put this one together, and it speaks to just how far you've come in this short duration! The campfire wood gathering was interesting. Those were all looking like pines of some sort. The moss lit a whole lot faster than I would have guessed. Here in the Puget Sound area, moss is soaking wet, and we typically go out in search of birch bark or sap from Douglas firs to start a fire. I think you're totally right when it comes to boon docking. There's no reason to stay at a campground unless there's something specific to that place that makes staying there convenient. It seems to me that the vast majority of the places you've shown us are all wide open areas. I can only imagine what amazing things you'll see and experience when you're pushing south. Keep up the great work and have as much fun as humanly possible!

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska

      Hi Brian! You might have caught on....I've been watching "How to improve your videos" videos during my boredom. 😂💁🏻‍♀️. Jim and I have decided on an editing technique that seems to help with improvement. I take most of the camera shots so I already have it in my head what we got. Jim downloads it and puts it in order. I go through and rearrange the shots to play with time a little and clean up the beginning and end of clips. After the rough draft, we usually decide on music together and hand the computer back and forth when one of us gets tired of looking at it. When we decide to turn the camera on to record sometimes I go into "I'm going to enjoy my time without a camera OKAY???!!" ....mode. You had asked what we burn so that made a great montage because people don't really know. I told Jim, you know, people in Florida don't really understand this, it would be great to show them! We are having sooo much fun and I'm glad you're here enjoying it with us. ❤️

      Wings and Wheels Alaska I think that’s a big thing you can capitalize on as Alaskans. Sure, there are plenty who go up there and shoot videos, but they don’t know the history, or folklore. They don’t know the trees, plants, or rocks. This is where you truly have an advantage, because while it’s completely normal for you, it’s not something we see or experience where we live. The moss thing surprised me because if you tried that with our moss, you’d just end up putting your fire out! 😂. I think those improvement videos have helped a lot and I’m sure you’re going to look back on all of this when you have tons of subscribers and be amazed at how far you’ve come. Thank you for bringing us along on your incredible adventures. 😃

    One question that always have had in trying to figure out if we want to buy an RV - how safe do you folks feel when you drycamp? Do most RVers have bear spray and or a gun? No one seems to talk about it but would seem that everyone has thought about it especially while camping out in the wild like you folks do. Understand if this is too sensitive of a subject in these crazy times.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  3 роки тому

      Hi Rick. Not a sensitive topic for us at all we actually talk about it pretty often. We are both always armed and have our pistols within arms reach while sleeping. During the summer we carry bear spray also. Do we feel safe? Yes. We just carry as a precaution. Both of us are familiar and are trained with firearms. Have we had any encounters? Nope. None at all.

There's several versions out there. These ones are from www.helianlighting.com. We've found them to be a brighter "white" LED. We took them with us to Hawaii and they became the campground "party" lights. 😁

This time we're going to take it easy and enjoy it while we can. What was crazy was the Turnagain Arm. I'm fairly certain the entire population of Anchorage was on that road. People sitting on the side of the road in their camp chairs eating lunch, at Beluga Point you had to wait for someone to leave, hundreds of people on the bike trails. It's like nothing I've ever seen before. Alaskans decided they live in a beautiful place after all?? ❤️

      It's going to be a slow process. Our Governor is taking baby steps and ensuring the economy can slowly regain momentum while the numbers continue to stay low so we will see what happens. He has a plan for several different phases. We can travel between communities by road but some of the requirements are to not stop for gas or groceries in communities etc. That's easy to do with the Revel. It's well stocked. 😁. Thank you for watching!

      Keeping tight restrictions on air travel into the villages and smaller communities and boarders remain closed. This is a "soft" opening with allowing some services to reopen under strict guidelines. Its a way to get the economy going again. My biggest concern is the rural communities that don't have the medical facilities to handle anything massive. Thankfully we shut down early enough and those numbers never came. Hopefully it stays that way. We will be down as soon as we can for sure!! ❤️

      Dale. So true.
      This entire experience has given me a different perspective on life.
      What I can and can't live without.
      What's important to us for survival?
      And trust. Who do I trust besides myself and my gut instinct?
      It's amazing how there's one things that remained the same in all of the, the world still remained beautiful.
      Thank you for your beautiful words. ❤️

    Do you keep your bear spray handy? Stay safe and healthy.

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 роки тому

      Yes, Bear Spray always in reach and never unarmed. And all the other precautions. Making noise, lighting up perimeter, not leaving food out. Never had any issues with Bears. I'm more concerned about people not putting their fires out and causing wildfires. Last summer was brutal because of that.

      There's trout in there but I think they're still fairly small. A loon floated right past her at one point and as soon as she saw it she went "swimming" after it, she looked like she was trying to fly. I cried laughing. Thanks for coming by to say Hi!

    Glad for you that you can be back on the road! Enjoy your videos. Question, do you put all your food in the bear locker, or is it safe to keep in the Revel?

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 роки тому +2

      Jay. It's safer to keep in the Revels refrigerator. If we had a grill or something we used that we couldn't wash out we would leave it in that container overnight. If you're in a car and tent camping and have all of your food in a cooler, its probably a good idea to put the cooler in that locker too. We are VERY cautious when it comes to food and bears.Thank you for watching and stopping in to ask a great question!

    What happens when you make it all the way South? Can you get on a boat and keep going? ;) living the dream, keep it coming.

      Hahah, Oh I wish! We have looked into the ferry but its pretty darn expensive. It's still on our bucket list though. Once we hit south I think we're going to start heading North and hopefully the boarder will open at some point this summer. Thanks for watching.

    Do you ever see bears?👀

    • @WingsandWheelsAlaska
      @WingsandWheelsAlaska  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Nita. Honestly? No. We have to go look for them. The last time we saw bears was in Denali National Park and they were far far away. We have black bears in neighborhoods that come down from the hills on "trash" day. We've seen black bears wandering along side of the road. But they are a very skittish animal and don't like noise or people. We stay bear aware of course but we have never seen them while camping. We follow all the rules and stay protected and hopefully it will stay that way. 😁

      Working wonderfully. With all this mud this time of year it's a beast to keep clean but overall it's doing great! Thank you for stopping in and saying Hi.

    I don’t get why people want to go to campgrounds at all! In California, they’re overcrowded, noisy, and you have to make reservations months in advance. No thanks. I’d take boon-docking any time over established campgrounds. I go out to the wilderness to avoid people, not to be packed in like sardines and forced to listen to someone’s generator all day/night. And to add insult to injury, we have to pay for that “privilege”, and being forced to buy green crappy firewood from a campground host. No thanks! There are quite a few places in CA that are National Forests, and BLM land, but much to my surprise, most people seem to prefer the overcrowded campgrounds. Go figure...

      We couldn’t agree with you more. Campgrounds in the winter is nice because we are typically the only ones there and they are free. During summer we do everything we can to avoid them. I know it will be tougher on some of our future travels but we will still try!
