This is a condensed video of every major (and a few minor) differences I could find between a normal/pacifist run and a Genocide run. Genocide run consists of killing every boss, event, and random enemy until there are no more enemies left in an area. Doing this makes most of the bosses die in one hit. However, 2 of the bosses (sans and Undyne) become MUCH more powerful and are the hardest bosses in the game. This run is also occasionally referred to as a No Mercy or Merciless run.
Undertale, a game by Toby Fox, is an RPG with bullet hell elements. It is a unique game in that you can play the game from beginning to end without killing a single enemy and characters inside the game remember what you did if you choose to reload a save and will call you out for it.

Do you want to know the reason why so many traps are completed already in genocide mode?
It's because you're so terrifying, so monstrous, so evil, that everyone solves the puzzles just to RUN AWAY FROM YOU.
+wtflol3657 IIRC The only reason they were unsolved in pacifist mode is because aphys reactivated them so she would have an excuse to take part in your adventure.
+mmm bop This man speaks the truth, Mettaton (before the ratings fight) reveals that Aphys set up all the traps and even Mettaton to create a struggle for Frisk, where she could then barge in and help Frisk out to seem like a good person, knowing this, there are quite a few dialogue options with her that also hints strongly that Mettaton wasn't lying, lastly, Aphys says that she's been following Frisk's heroic deeds (on camera) before she even met him, so the reason why the puzzles are solved already in the genocide run?
Because Aphys never began admiring you to begin with and therefore never did the set-up.
+AchelonX That only accounts for those in hotland, though. The other puzzles, the ones in the other areas, are completed for you either by being...well, creepy, or by flowey helping you out. As an example, in the first area, where you find the switch between the three trees hidden, if you examine it on a genocide run, it'll say that "A number of vines have pressed down the switch hidden here".
Oh that's pretty spooky.

Sans's comments during the run are the hardest to get through. Especially when he asks you to at least humor Papyrus's puzzles when you keep walking right through them

I really... here's the thing.
I don't have the goddamn heart to get this.
I love the characters, I love the setting, even as childish and 4th-wall breaking as it is at times- particularly the endings.
But goddammit, sometimes you don't realize just what the characters ARE until you've gone through the whole game and seen them at their best and their worst. And here, when confronted with the sort of cthulian evil you'd need a whole religion just to understand, you see ALL of it in just a few heartfelt seconds.
Every last ounce of every character, in a single death scene. Every time.
Fuck you, Undertale, for being so amazing.
+Kami Maia I couldn't do it either. Even when I was playing Neverwinter Nights and I created a chaotic evil Wizard... he ended up becoming Good aligned by the end of the game through my actions. Oops.

+Kami Maia i think that was the point, that the only reason the player would want to consider this route is for their own morbid curiosity. it doesnt matter that the characters have personalities, humor, lightheartedness, you just gotta see what happens, however, as comic sans says, "you're gonna have a bad time..."

+Gnurt My dad was part of an emergency response team in the United States Coast Guard. He was the guy that would pull people out of the ocean and run into burning buildings. He even pulled a man out of a burning car one time when he was off duty, and now devotes his life to finding jobs for people with disabilities.
I'm not trying to guilt you or anything, but he once told me "All evil needs to succeed is for good people to do nothing." Flowey did call us out for watching, the developers of this game knew what they were doing.

what i find to be the most creepy thing is the lack of music
Even more creepy than the lack of music is that sound that plays when Flowey realizes you're coming to kill it too and gets scared (same one that plays when you're in battle with the monster kid who befriended you and the last scene in a Soulless Pacific run)
Even if it has the best music in the game (megalovania)

When there isn’t a lack of music, music is usually slowed to half speed. This is true for the music in Hotland for example.

+Barry Scott If you are asking why are people getting emotional because of that line, it's simply because they were the duo you loved most in the game, in the happy ending, they are the comic relief, the ones that always cheered the place, Sans with his jokes and Papyrus with his innocence and pride, they were the perfect pair and they always went to Grillby's to eat, so when you finally do this run, killing both brothers, killing those who believed in you the most, and Sans, just about to fade away, talks to his brother one last time, knowing that he is dead.... Man, just think about it, it will come to you, the game is just that amazing.

Chara hesitates to kill flowey. He doesn't die right away if you press the button though he does. Basically that's your very very last chance to leave genocide. You can exit the game and reset instead of killing flowey. That's your mercy option you don't actually get a button you already did too much damage but with Chara hesitating you can reset instead of killing him. Wonder how flowey feels after you reset before killing him.

+xylem0 Mixed paths are definitely possible. For instance, you can go full genocide until the monster kid, then spare her (him?) and go full pacifist from there. Fleeing from Undyne seemed tougher than normal, but far from impossible.

I believe the best explanation for why Undyne and Sans can be more/less difficult for different people is this. Undyne's attacks are all about action and reaction. There are patterns to her movements, but a lot of them are reliant on where exactly the player is. It's all about reading the next attack and trying to be too steps ahead at all times.
Sans, however, is all about patterns and repetition. Where Undyne focused on out manoeuvring, the only way to read Sans' attacks is to know that he's making them. He attacks the same way every time, and it's on you to remember the exact move that will let you thread that narrow needle. The only way to beat Sans is to know every move he's going to make before he makes it and outwit his trickery with precise rebuttal.
These are very different styles of play and while it's possible to master both, it can be near impossible for some people (in my case, I have learning disabilities and I was hitting them hard in both fights. My brain and my fingers don't work well together, and the momentary delay that causes makes my reaction times significantly slower. On top of that, I suffer from brainfog, slowing my thoughts to a crawl. I barely beat Undyne after many, many attempts, only to meet a boss that not only required precision, but fast memory recall too? At the pinnacle of my skill, days upon days of constant work, I could barely make it to the halfway point with no health and no items. I took the dunk and shelved the game. Sans broke me.)
Is it weird that I find how you coldly murder Flowey to be the most heartbreaking thing of all this route? I mean, it's FLOWEY all right, and yet even *he* is freaking *terrified* of you and your actions. And he probably actually tried to alert Asgore, but then, seeing they really can't confront you, pretended to plan it all to appease you at least a little bit. And the way he calls you his best friend and later *begs you in tears* not to kill him... And your response to that? Simply destroying him without a word. That's freaking *depressing*.

Eh, I don't know... I'm not "too weak" to do it, I simply don't want to.
I was writing a long post to explain my thought process but it was way too convoluted, so TL;DR :
I _could_ do it with enough curiosity, but by this game's standards (where characters are stated to be sentient, unlike in most other settings) it's highly unethical to get this ending, so I don't do it out of respect towards the characters by treating them like living beings instead of easily-resettable pixel puppets.
I like to try to do this in every game anyway beause I just plain like it, but it usually serves as more of a personal feel-good thing than something that the game will actually recognize.
The main reason I wanted to see this was for the extra bits of lore because the other endings felt a bit plot hole-y (but I think I understand what happened now).
I don't think anyone should take what Flowey says too seriously, in any case.

+Danmakuklopper-kun “Vanishing_Cloud” People seem to say a lot of the time that it's the true ending, and while it's obviously meant to be where you'd want things to end, but I feel like, the ACTUAL ending of the game is wherever you last stopped playing. Because if you reset after that ending, Flowey outright tells you you'll be tearing their happiness away, that they don't get to stay there while you romp around more. Your universe ends wherever you decided to let it end, which could absolutely be in stasis after you made them finally happy, reset everything, and then stopped playing once you got to Snowdin for some reason or another. sans outright tells you that he's so apathetic because he got to be happy so many times but it ever lasted. To hand-wave that away and say they got the happiest ending forever no matter what you did would be so contrary to the game and its lore, as well as all of the best parts and themes of it. It's entirely possible that's how it goes anyway, but if that's true it would be a huge blow to the depth of the game.

Prior to your final battle with Sans, he ate all the Spaggeti that Papyrus left behind, as to have part of his brother with him when he takes you down. So when he gets cut, all the sauce spills out. Thats why in his final moments he calls out for papyrus. Because part of Papyrus is inside him.

it is creepy, I really wanted to see the difference and it messed me up, the heart break of toriel's last words, how sans and the others say you aren't even human because of your actions, the music, it made it worse that there were no audio reactions to this >^< I felt completely lost, alone in hell.. sans last words and flowey's... it hurt so bad, and how sans kills you in the sparing scene QnQ honestly this was a nightmare
It's kinda funny, in a sick sense. Maybe it's just me but when you go around and it's all empty I just think "Huh, so they do have some common sense." And when the little monster kid tried to stop you, I found that funny because the kid couldn't win. Ever. And Sans lines killed me. "He would love to see a human, so would you keep pretending to be one?" That line in particular... I love it. I think the Genocide has some of the best lines in the entire game, and Sans is badass, so that's a plus. I don't mind this ending as much as I thought I would, but the "Papyrus, would you like something? *thump*" had me in tears.

My personal take on Undertale is that the "true" pacifist path exists primarily to drive home the message of the genocide path that much harder. That the feeling of being content with such a happy, positive, heartfelt ending is a temporary one, and sooner or later, you will want more out of Undertale. And you may be willing to do anything to get more out of it. Anything. Whatever it takes to drain the game of all experiential value.
I don't think I've never felt so ambivalently toward any work of fiction in my life.

People doing genocide to challenge the Toby Fox's words, or do it because they actually want to, this is horrible. 2. People who do genocide because they don't want the guilt of being called out for it, this is also bad, but also sad. 3. People who don't do genocide because they really don't want to do it anymore, being willing to do it without knowing the outcome, being extremely bad. 4. People who don't do genocide because their soul is too pure, they literally will not justify murder, even if they get called out for watching it. I don't know about you, but I feel better about myself being taunted not wanting to do it, even after being called out, I applaud Toby Fox's attempt of a guilt trip, but the way I see it is that the people who watched this, never wanting to do genocide because they literally have the power not to, are probably on par with a true pacifist, as they brave the absolutely horrid things to come, and if they actually feel the pain while watching this, then again, they're as good as a true pacifist. This ALSO applies to someone who has the guts to tough on through everything in sheer curiosity, knowing they shouldn't do that in reality, and possibly feeling bad about what they do, or indifferent if mentally conditioned. I feel like I'm a really messed up person.
I ended up doing a genocide run solely for the fact that, I was in the complete dark about this game other than the art I saw people made of it. I asked a friend who was in love with this game and said that it would be incredibly difficult if I chose to kill everything in my path. Being the person who loves a challenge, I ended up just going for killing, even though I was told to just talk to them.
I didn't know "incredibly difficult" meant heart-wrenching, but the thing is... I kind of enjoyed killing everyone. It felt like I finally got to play as the villain instead of the hero, and none of the whole Fallout "nuke Megaton" and kill everyone else in the hotel kind of villain, but the one to crush the hopes and watch as all the ones below you scurry in fear or try to desperately stop you.
I guess playing a genocide run kind of helped me see the kind of emotions you rarely ever get to see in a run where you're the hero: Fear. Anger. Despair.

+maxm10081 No, it's still the protagonist. The protagonist is the character the story revolves around. This person does not have to be a "good guy" or a "hero." An antagonist, meanwhile, is someone whose goals run opposite of the protagonist. In the genocide run, both Undyne and Sans are still antagonists, even though they are heroes. Frisk/Chara, meanwhile, are still protagonists, even though they're villains. Similarly, in the manga/anime Death Note, Light is a villain protagonist because the story revolves around him and his motives. L, meanwhile, is a heroic antagonist because he runs counter to Light, despite the fact that he's trying to stop a mass murderer. Protagonists can be evil and antagonists can be good, and this has been your literature vocabulary lesson of the day.

When Flowey knew that people were watching to see what happens, because they are to weak to do it themselves, I freaked out!!
If I ever get the urge to do the Genocide run, I'm just gonna let Sans "spare" me and then go back and do the other paths. I know that technically isn't completion, but I would much rather Sans have the last laugh than that rotten child (and get my true pacifist runs be corrupted). Plus I have reasoning why it could happen in-universe: the kid you play as is cruel until s/he experiences how it feels to be beaten. S/he then realizes the pain s/he has been inflicting and is ashamed (kinda Megatron in Transformers Prime). S/he starts a new save file and swears to fix all her/his mistakes and save the underground.
...Man I've put a lot of thought in a run I will probably never do.

Whatever happened to Asgore absorbing the six human souls? Undyne made it sound that he'll have tremendous power. But, Flowey just kills him in one blow.
Why is it the indi games like this that are much freaking better than triple A titles?

As much as I love this game, it really isn't "much freaking better than triple A titles". It suffers from a few flaws and depending on the eye of the beholder, those flaws can be enough to render this a "crappy" game. If I had to guess why it *seems* so much freaking better, it's probably because triple A titles are relying on successful formula that older gamers are tired of, but newer gamers still enjoy. Innovation tends to occur gradually. These are businesses that are successful because a multitude of gamers enjoy their games, rather than a few gamers REALLY enjoying their games.
People like Toby Fox make the game because they have a specific vision - and they charge money for it because they honestly deserve to be paid for their time and effort. It's not a sustainable business practice, but it does produce gems like these. Most indie games that set out to make games that "make you think" just come off as pretentious and insulting to one's intelligence. I think this game managed to be thoughtful without being condescending, which is more than I can say for a lot of raved-about indie games.
However, someone probably thinks this game is condescending or preachy, too. Perspective's a bitch.
How I see the game is story and this battle system. It brings something fresh into the gaming industry. And the game lets you be the villain for once, which is cool... but frightening..

That alone isn't enough to want to make a game. You have to have a specific vision of what that entails. Toby's idea is good. Very good. And I absolutely freakin' love Undertale.
But the game isn't perfect, and I think some people love it so much that they forget that. An easy mistake to make. Some people hate it so much that they can't see *any* redeeming qualities. That's also unfortunately an easy mistake to make.

I must say, Flowey's situation is quite horrific. He can't feel love, compassion, tranquility or safety. But it seems he can only feel fear.
He's done everything the world has to offer in his perspective, but yet he doesn't die due to his fear of death. Such a horrid way to live.Wanting to love, but incapable to do so, Knowing you have no soul, clinging to existence fearing what would happen after death. The end also hurts quite a bit, Flowey thinking he finally found peace. Only to be denied it in the end.
However this raises a few questions as well, is Flowey the real Asriel? Throughout the game it clarifies a monster's soul dissipates when out of the body, and it has been stated that Flowey has the mind of Asriel, but not his soul. So I ask, if this is not the real Asriel what does that make Flowey? Is he technically a clone of some sort, a flawed copy? Did Asriel's essence, "soul", pass on? And if the real Asriel is dead, does that make Flowey an entirely different person? Is Flowey just simply a flower gifted/cursed with sentience. Finally realizing his own mortality, going through a never ending existential crisis?

Flowey is as much Asriel as a soulless flower injected with raw determination and the memories of Asriel can be. Flowey's main distinguishing trait from Asriel is his lack of empathy caused by a lack of a soul.
But Flowey isn't completely disassociated from Asriel. When he gets the 6 human souls, he comments on how it's been a long time since he's had a soul inside him. Flowey has never had a soul inside him, but Asriel has. Therefore, Flowey considers himself Asriel. An Asriel so twisted that he doesn't even call his parents mom and dad anymore, but an Asriel nonetheless.
Essentially, turning into Flowey has made Asriel a sociopath. The writing is beautiful, because it gives you a window into what it really must be like. To feel no emotion, to feel no love, no compassion, no pity. Emptiness. Constantly. I couldn't even imagine, but Toby and the rest of the people who worked on the game did a phenomenal job on letting the players grasp what it's like. Or, at least, how we imagine it's like.
+Styrlyng Asriel's soul didn't simply disappear, he absorbed Chara's soul to get out of the barrier and fullfil Chara's last wish. Remember, he made the way back to his home through sheer determination. Being a monster with an human soul plus the determination may have allowed his soul to persever after his death, so... ...i belive it may be, in fact, Asriel.

Flowey doesn't have Asriel's soul. It's stated multiple times that Flowey is soulless (by Flowey/Asriel and by Alphys)..
Asriel's basically did disappear. After Asriel's death, it's never mentioned again.

Upah The Wooper Muffet's really the only one that got to me. Toriel dies laughing at her failure, Papyrus's death is more comedic than anything, Undyne was too satisfying to be sad, Mettaton was just kind of anticlimactic, and Sans again falls under too satisfying to be sad (and to be honest, I didn't like Sans that much anyways). But Muffet, you actually see her death directly affecting someone. The spider lowering the flower over her remains always gets me (and it hurts more considering her, Blook, and Undyne are my favorite characters)
Undyne doesn't sacrifice her own life to save the underground SHE DOES SO TO SAVE THE ENTIRE WORLD!
