I am a retired Truck Driver. Back in the late 1900's I used to drive my big rig with double trailers over Devil's Slide after delivering apples to Martinelli's Apple Juice Plant in Watsonville, it was such a beautiful drive heading North on Coastal Hwy.1 and 101 back to Sonoma County.
Age gives a lot of perspective. My stepdad was born in 1920. I thought he was soooo old. I lived in Pacifica 1963-1967. We took a lot of rides on Hwy 1 and in my mind, as an 8-10 yo, he was blathering on. But there was a part of my mind that paid attention to him. So glad I did. My memories are beautiful.
My neck of the woods! We drove along the original Devil's Slide on the very last day you were allowed to do so, good memories for sure. All the times I had driven it before I didn't realize how many bad accidents there apparently were throughout the years. It's great they saved it for pedestrians to enjoy those amazing views!
I'm from the UK and have driven that part of the PCH on a couple of occasions on trips, and didn't even know that was there. If I ever get to to it again, that is a stop to add to the list for sure!
I definitely had not paid attention to the bypass tunnels being created. Yay for the road being kept and turned into a walking path. Will have to venture out there
I was doing my first full PCH road trip, from LA to Victoria BC in 2006, when I came upon the closed section at the Devil's Slide! So I never got to do that stretch. But it was the trip of a lifetime. Thank you for sharing this awesome view with us.
have done this on a fold bike... that uphill part is no joke.. better off walking it and bring a zoom lens! birds on rock and just beautiful coastal views.
There is a couple mile section of US-2 on the north side of Lake Michigan that was rebuilt further inland probably due to worries about beach erosion and the highway road falling down the hill in the U.P.
Josh, thanks for posting the video. I just hiked the Devils Slide Trail myself 2 weeks ago. Even though it is short, it is worth walking it, as the views are outstanding. I concur with parking on the south parking lot, as the walk is more scenic, as from the north parking lot the view of the ocean is blocked by a ridge. Note that the walk from the north side is much shorter and must be at a higher elevation, because there doesn't seem to be as much elevation change. The walk coming from the south parking lot is longer and has a 9% grade at the part approaching the high point on the trail.
I'll have to check this out on my next trip through the area! Course I've already been on it...driving it from before they turned it into a hiking/biking area. Pretty cool idea for a section of the road that just continuously costs $$$$$$$ to repair for car/truck use.
That's a really cool trail to walk because of the stunning views, I remember driving on it and it definitely was a little crazy to drive it. Devils Slide always reminded me of driving down in Big Sur because of the steep cliffs and jagged coastline but with a lot more traffic.
That’s kind of like what they did to historic hiway 30 in Oregon, the first road in the US designed to be a scenic drive. It was built in the very early 1900s after scenic drives in Europe. It was eventually bypassed and replaced by I-84. Only a portion remains that is drivable and has stunning views. But a chunk was too unstable and narrow for cars so has become a pretty long hiking trail. I will have to check this trail out next time I’m up there
Where did you have breakfast, Josh? In Half Moon Bay? This was my neck of the woods as a boy, growing up in South San Francisco. My folks always drove this route to Santa Cruz.
That's crazy, I live in the valley & used to go to Pacifica all the time since 2000 to go to Rockaway beach. I haven't been since 2014 I think? So I'll have to check this out.
You can also extend this hike by going out to the Pedro Point Headlands. The access to the headlands is north of the tunnel and just a short walk from the Devils Slide north parking lot next to the PCH.
That's crazy. I suspect there will be (or already are) more sections of the PCH that become like this. This is the type of stuff we want to check out when we do the whole thing one day. Amazing views.
What a beautiful relaxing trail! I swear, it feels like the folks who officially name hiking trails enjoy giving them the most deterring names. 😂 We were out exploring Joshua tree last week and had a ton of fun exploring the “hall of horrors” trail. Can’t wait to share that name with other parents in our things to do with kids video next week 😅
That area was called Devil's Slide long before there was a trail there. One thing that you don't see unless you're looking for it was an old train tunnel at the bottom of one of the cliffs. The train stopped running about 100 years ago and the tunnel was abandoned, only to be used during the '30s as a place for bootleggers to hide alcohol.
A geology teacher once told me to discern the origination of the coastal range, imagine a long time ago someone took a new stick of gum. The new gum represents the original island arc. Ok now imagine it has been chewed and tossed on the ground, and after lots of traffic over it, you come across it today and wonder what it must have been before.
I left California in 2006, I remember when the construction barely started. Back then I used to drive over devils slide regularly. I even rode a bike over it twice when I was 20. I left California before it was rebuilt but I am glad I did now because of how California's 'woke' politicians have absolutely destroyed the place I used to love.

Late 1900’s 😂
I’m going to start using that line. “Back in the late 1900’s” 😂
MF how old is you?😂😂😂
Late 1900s , sounds like you're 100 years old OG
Sonoma Rocks
I grew up in Pacifica and used to take devils slide to work everyday

What a cool experience to walk on old PCH while taking in those stunning views. So glad to know they kept it around for us to still enjoy now
I love the California Coastal Trail!!
I'm from the UK and have driven that part of the PCH on a couple of occasions on trips, and didn't even know that was there. If I ever get to to it again, that is a stop to add to the list for sure!
I'm so lucky this is 10 minutes from my home. Glad you enjoyed your visit here!
Always great
Love the Devils Slide highway & trail
My dad went to HS in Half Moon Bay in the 70s he had some stories about devil's slide
Thanks!
The old railroad tracks are still below the cliff. There is also a cave at the bottom / beach that looks like a great spot for pirates' treasures.
I definitely had not paid attention to the bypass tunnels being created. Yay for the road being kept and turned into a walking path. Will have to venture out there
Can't wait to see this on my next trip up to NorCal!

Always videos worth watching 👍
You can add more to your hike by going up into the hills. The views are worth the effort!
Looks like a fun hike! Thanks for sharing this Josh!

Gorgeous ! I live here sooo blessed ❤
Always come here, short but pleasant

@ 4:21 Yellow Crash Barrells I installed them .... BTY
I love this place!!
I grew up in the Daly City Pacifica area 50 years ago & have been in that bunker many times. Back then most of it was covered by dirt and ice plant.
Love your videos/content brother, keep it coming! 👏🏽

I have been over to a restaurant in Big Sur... Nepenthe? (sp) Drove there from Carmel Valley. What a beautiful drive that was.

Several waterfall stops on highway 30.

OPL! Old Princeton Landing. Food is locally sourced, and delicious. Pet friendly as well.
Beautiful
Thanks Josh appreciate this video didn't know there was a Devil's slide hiking trail.
You can also visit the world’s most scenic Taco Bell nearby at Linda Mar Beach!
Yes lol! My visiting family from Australia wanted to go to that Taco Bell because they saw it on UA-cam!
Sheeeeshh 🔥🔥
Awesome!! Another bucket list stop to make! Great channel, best wishes for your family!
Very cool ! will make sure to check this out next time I am in NorCal! Thank you
It's a pleasant relatively short 3 hour (or less) hike from Pacifica to Morrow Beach that allow the hiker to take the bus back to Pacifica.
You should review the Purisima Creek Trail while you’re near that area off Skyline Blvd. You won’t be disappointed.
I like this one!!

Ca is still the most beautiful state in the country. I miss it terribly.
You should also check out Pillar Point Bluffs! Just down 1 and I think even prettier!
Love your videos. Keep posting amazing hikes. Ty.
That part of Highway 1 is called the Cabrillo Highway, not the Pacific Coast Highway
Nice one, man 👍
That's crazy. I suspect there will be (or already are) more sections of the PCH that become like this. This is the type of stuff we want to check out when we do the whole thing one day. Amazing views.
PNW is a nightmare for roads.
@@hia5235 how come?
So cool! I kinda wondered what they ended up doing with the road/highway after the last slides.
What a beautiful relaxing trail! I swear, it feels like the folks who officially name hiking trails enjoy giving them the most deterring names. 😂

I've been to that bunker. Looks different now. In 2006 you could still go inside.
Miss driving this. Made a video on the last day 💕💜
Hey Josh did you hear your shoutout on Keep Your Daydream’s channel ?!
Love❤ this video so cool 😎
Nice thank you I’ll go this weekend 😂
Wow that looks so beautiful 😍 Is that located in the Big Sur region?
No. Big Sur is to the south of Monterey. This is near San Francisco.
I think I drove on that stretch of road in 2002🎯
Great informative video sir! Do you know if you can fly a drone in Devil's Slide? I wanna do a short film on this beautiful treasure

I did my driver's test in '86 on Devil's Slide :)
So sad that people desecrate historical places with stupid graffiti.
I would take a skateboard with me.
Whaaaaat 😵🤔
Never hear of this ... bathrooms im in 👌
Cool but to far for me to drive for that short
I knew this area looked familiar it’s the whole drive to the military base in gta 5
Never been
Plan on traffic. On weekends we are prisoners. Week days are prime.

Closed this stupid road !
People die here all the time
I hate this place
